American Express Green Card No Longer Accepting New Applications – Refresh Incoming – More Details

Card is now live, view more details here.

Update 10/21/19: Looks like we have more details based on this image a redditor posted (apparently from the CEO town hall today).

  • 30,000 Membership Rewards welcome bonus + limited time $100 luggage credit from away
  • $150 annual fee
  • Card will earn 3x points on travel, transit & dining
  • $100 CLEAR credit
  • $100 Loungebuddy credit
  • TV ads will go live Thursday, so expecting the card to launch by then

Don’t think the card is worth keeping if that is the full list of benefits.

Update: Reddit user regancai noticed this ad when logged into their American Express account:

Looks like that will be the sign up bonus, rather than a benefit for existing users?

Original post: The American Express Green Card is currently not accepting new applications (this has been confirmed by @AskAmEx). There has been speculation and rumors that the card would be refreshed for some time. Some reddit users have reported receiving an e-mail for the new card and offer. It seems like the launch bonus will be 35,000 Membership Rewards after $1,000 in spend and the card could be getting a name change to ‘Amex Preferred Rewards Green Card‘. Previously rumors indicated the annual fee would be $95 and it would come with an Amazon Prime membership, possibly some sort of partnership with Away luggage and also earn at the following rates:

  • 4x points on gas purchases
  • 3x points on streaming services

That is all unconfirmed at this stage, we should know more soon.

Thanks for the update!!
I’m still waiting on this to pull the trigger on my last amex card, I’m currently at 4 personals + the platinum, if this really contains amazon prime (Or Any credit) it will literally pay for itself and would be a nice card to have, super exited about this

Charge cards don’t count against the 5 card limit.

Gerhardt
Gerhardt

Green is a charge card and there is no limit for those with Amex.

Why were you waiting, you missed out by not applying before the refresh.

Deborah
Deborah

Dan, how did Marco miss out? He isn’t going to get the bonus if he got the card before the refresh, right? What am I missing? Like others, I’m trying to decide whether to cancel my Gold, whose AF is due, and PC to the green, or cancel the Gold and then apply for the Green.

Dan - Legal Bank Robber

He could’ve got the bonus without an AF but still get the benefits of the new card. Deborah

I see what you mean…because there has been no AF the first year. Are you certain that there will not be a similar waiver for the refreshed card?

Dan - Legal Bank Robber
Dan - Legal Bank Robber

If they are adding multiple benefits it’s seems doubtful it would be waived.

It says “…Agreements-American Express Preferred Rewards Green Card”
But if you search Gold Card you similarly get “…Agreements-Rewards Gold Card…”

Don’t think its going to get a rename b/c you get the similar “Rewards” when search Gold Card which doesn’t include “rewards” in its name. Could see why they would rename it when Green Card has a different connotation in the U.S.

P
P

OK. I was going to downgrade my Gold to this card. What is the downgrade option for the Gold then?

Jags
Jags

You may still be able to downgrade to Green. This just means you can’t sign up for a new account. If they don’t allow you to downgrade to Green then there are no other options you’ll either need to pay the $250 or cancel. I’d ask for a retention offer and keep the Gold personally.

P
P

Thanks. Yes. the rep I just chatted with was able to downgrade it.

Chicagoan33
Chicagoan33

Is it possible to downgrade and later on apply for a new Green card to get the bonus? Or if I want the bonus do not downgrade my upcoming Gold renewal? Thanks! I would have kept Gold if the $100 airline incidentals were easier to use.

P
P

No, you will not get a bonus if you’ve had the card before unless you can get targeted for one without the lifetime language.

Mike
Mike

Did they read you the terms and conditions of the Green card? Is it the old terms? Where you able to get any small detail about the refresh?

P
P

No, the rep did not quote the full terms. I didn’t ask any information about a refresh.

what about green corporate cards?

What about Business Green Amex? Can you find out

Nothing in the near future.

Wonder if you can get bonus if you had green card at one point

Probably not.

When they refreshed the gold card they offered people something to “upgrade” to the new card, no?

I don’t remember.

JohnFromATL
JohnFromATL

But there is no card to upgrade from… Green is the lowest tier charge card. And you can’t move from credit card to charge card. So no “upgrades” to green.

Dan - Legal Bank Robber

Nope

It should include a ground transportation category in addition to that gas category…

Damn, just applied last week and was approved. Shoulda waited!

Don’t feel bad, if they raise the fee you may have lucked out for the first year.

Dan - Legal Bank Robber

Why in the world would’ve wanted to wait?

lilurbanachiever

The new bonus is 10K points higher. I am in the same boat as Jeff G, but frankly I was surprised I was even approved for the bonus at all. Too much amex in my past.

Dan - Legal Bank Robber

The annual fee is likely to increase.as well so are you really winning? Doubtful. Grandfathered into old AF too.

The Grandfathering of the Gold AF didn’t even last a year.

My 1st annual fee on the Gold just recently posted: $195, which was a nice surprise.

EDWNY

4x Gas would be sweet. Hope the AF will stay $95.

And double-hope it’s still waived the first year.

Doubt it tho

YoniPDX

Doubtful as Prime AF is $119 – thinking new AF will be $129-$159 if it include Prime just speculation

Trippy
Trippy

Amex may get it for cheap from Amazon. I pay $59 a year for Prime as a student.

justmeha
justmeha

was that the card that was totally useless (or was their some hidden perk)

YoniPDX
YoniPDX

Umm sure 35K MR AF waived 1st yr.

Or 40-45k MR combined with a P#2 referra

Then it was great herding dust bunnies in your sock drawerl

Then after 12 months often a pay over time , and the. Upgrade offers for Gold/Pt

Thibault

justmeha

Yes, the card was considered useless by most people- I’m sure there were some who disagree with that statement- but most did consider it particularly useless

Advice Needed: Both my parents have had Amex Green cards forever, but these are their only credit cards.
Need advice on how to move them to just a simple cash back credit card (thinking Citi DC) but then how to go about eventually closing the green card so they do not need to pay the annual fee anymore without killing their credit scores. Thoughts?

DB
DB

Upgrade to Gold and look into MS

DCJoe
DCJoe

Have them do a product change to the Everyday Card. No annual fee, keep the points intact, and keep the card history on their credir report.

George
George

Don’t think you can do that, as the EveryDay is a credit card.

Max
Max

There’s no path to $0 AF without closing the account. Pray that the new card is worth keeping.

missjenniferd1🦉 🦁

apply for citi dc first,

then apply for amex bluecash everyday,

then move the credit limits from the green cards over to the blue cash,

then close the green amex cards afterward.

moyang_mm
moyang_mm

There is no “limits” in the green card because it is a charge card, not a credit card.

JDubs
JDubs

Is it just me or are these AMEX charge cards now just a random assortment of bonuses?
Gold = travel + dining/grocery
Green = gas + streaming + luggage
Wouldn’t it make more sense to put gas and the luggage thing with the travel card? And then put the dining/grocery with the streaming to make a “dining and entertainment” card?

George
George

It would make sense for you, but not for them. They want you to get both.

sdsearch
sdsearch

There is no “travel” earning bonus on Gold. The Gold 3x bonus is for airline flights booked directly with the airline (or through Amex), nothing else. No hotels, no rentals cars, no cruises, no trains, no other kind of travel.

DGS
DGS

You get a $75 credit by booking with your Gold Card through the Gold Hotel Collection.

Roy
Roy

Getting this card for the free Amazon Prime alone would be worth it. Prime is $127 a year and if this card keeps the fee at $95 it will be a no brainer for me.

Cinnabar
Cinnabar

Agreed. It pays for itself and gives a good gas card option. Amex is trying to take over all of my spending.

YoniPDX
YoniPDX

The only way I can see them doing $95 with Prime would be like the WeWorks and PT Biz just the first year – which is kinda of line with Chase Prime sign up bonus or Amex Prime biz $150.

Or I could see them doing a $59 Amazon credit for Prime subscribers with a $149-169 AF.

I’ll be shocked if it was a non-cobranded green card that had a $95 AF and offered a higher ROI than card cost. Even the Gold/PT cards are not a true breakeven ROI. I still have a $99 membship credit from Prime 2018 that I could convert to a $99 GC

YoniPDX
YoniPDX

But adding a 2nd Prime acct under a different email or P#2.

Could be good for churning more UR/MR/TY offers as well as all the targeted offers that have decent value although small add up – but that would give you four accts to for offers (2nd household or business acct per main acct).

TheJstandsforJ
TheJstandsforJ

I see the odds of an effective annual fee of less than $0 to be less than 0%. If the fee is $95, there is not going to be a recurring full Prime benefit.

grumbo
grumbo

It would be a huge money move for amex. It would very quickly make this the most popular card in America, with big time traction among ordinary (non-churning) folks. I guarantee increased transaction fees will more than pay for whatever amazon would charge amex (which I’d bet would be at a substantial discount anyway)

Andy
Andy

They might just up the AF to compensate for the benefits, let’s see what happens soon.

Glad I kept my greenie.
