[Rumor] American Express To Refresh Green Card (4x On Gas, 3x On Streaming & More) – June/July Date

Update 5/13/19: User nufsixes on reddit is saying that the company they work for is releasing a product in mid September in collaboration with the American Express Green card. That might mean the refresh has been/will be pushed back until September. They work for baggage/toiletry bag company. I have zero idea how reliable that information is, but seems like a weird thing to lie about.

Update 3/23/19: American Express is hoping to refresh this card by June/July. I’m not sure if the exact specifics are the same as mentioned below or if they have made further tweaks but the refresh date has firmed for June/July period.

Original post: American Express plans to refresh the Green charge card they currently offer, it’s expected that these changes will go live sometime in March but possibly as early as February. Expected changes are as follows:

  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • 4x points on gas purchases
    • 3x points on streaming services

American Express are also trying to include Amazon Prime as a benefit of this card. It isn’t clear if the $95 annual fee will be increased or not, I suspect it will considering when other cards have been refreshed American Express has also increased the annual fee. Currently there is no reason to keep this card long term, so the card itself is in desperate need of a refresh. If the annual fee remained the same and they added Prime as a benefit then I’d keep it long term as $95 is cheaper than Prime by itself. I imagine if Prime is added the annual fee would also be increased to $119.

I could see the fee going to $150 if these are the benefits.

If they don’t add Prime as well, the streaming will be worse than the $95 BCP with 6% on streaming. And you really would have to spend alot on gas and value MR points to make the 4x on gas better than the 3% on the BCP.

If it covers Prime with a <$150/year AF, the extra 1X on gas over my Citi Premier would make it JUST good enough to add to my wallet ($1800/year on gas, MR=1.7cpp, TYP=1.5cpp). I'd still keep the Premier for 3X on hotels, killer purchase benefits, and great travel coverages (thus keeping it as my airfare card as well).

With the Amex Gold, I already earn 4X on Netflix by buying GCs at the grocery store. I also get about 15% on Hulu by buying GCs through Raise, clicking through TopCashback, and paying with my BoA Cash Rewards. So the streaming service category would be useless for me.

It seems they work for Away, which kind of makes sense that Away launches a special color with the Green card refresh

Any rumors, update on this? I got a 25,000 MR offer yesterday for the Green card and first year fee waived so I took it. I am assuming the old card would automatically be upgraded to the revamped card.

I wonder what the refresh for the green card will be like now that the preferred has received it’s additions for streaming. Any word?
