[Rumor] American Express To Refresh Green Card (4x On Gas, 3x On Streaming & More) – June/July Date

Update 5/13/19: User nufsixes on reddit is saying that the company they work for is releasing a product in mid September in collaboration with the American Express Green card. That might mean the refresh has been/will be pushed back until September. They work for baggage/toiletry bag company. I have zero idea how reliable that information is, but seems like a weird thing to lie about.

Update 3/23/19: American Express is hoping to refresh this card by June/July. I’m not sure if the exact specifics are the same as mentioned below or if they have made further tweaks but the refresh date has firmed for June/July period.

Original post: American Express plans to refresh the Green charge card they currently offer, it’s expected that these changes will go live sometime in March but possibly as early as February. Expected changes are as follows:

  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • 4x points on gas purchases
    • 3x points on streaming services

American Express are also trying to include Amazon Prime as a benefit of this card. It isn’t clear if the $95 annual fee will be increased or not, I suspect it will considering when other cards have been refreshed American Express has also increased the annual fee. Currently there is no reason to keep this card long term, so the card itself is in desperate need of a refresh. If the annual fee remained the same and they added Prime as a benefit then I’d keep it long term as $95 is cheaper than Prime by itself. I imagine if Prime is added the annual fee would also be increased to $119.

Wow, if Prime is a benefit, it’ll make this card a no-brainer for so many people assuming the annual fee is $119 or less.

Yeah I would gladly get it and use it just for prime and gas on its own. It would be a long term card then

Do you know if there a limit on gas?

I’m guessing prime will be a first year teaser. But if not, great!

Mmmm enticing… would downgrade my Vanilla Plat to this and grab the Charles Schwab platinum for the benefits + 1.25 cent cash out option.

Then I don’t have to hold Amex Gold Biz for Gas purchase!

Amex Plat – 5x Airfare and Amex Travel
Amex Gold – 4x Dining and Groceries
Amex Green – 4x Gas and 3x Streaming
Amex BBP – 2x Everything

We just need International Travel and we are good!

Assuming you want all MR. It’s easy to pick up travel from a card such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve or Citi Prestige.

Keep the schwab card as your plat. Cash out constantly

Many of us can’t even apply for Chase cards.

Bill

You can always apply, it’s just that if you’ve over 5/24, it’s a guaranteed denial and waste of one (or more) HPs.

What an absolutely worthless comment.

I’d push for more flexible travel in line with the Sapphire Reserve. If the Plat revamped with 4x MR for travel, but that travel was expanded to include any hotel, cabs/ubers, etc., I’d take that over 5x on the restricted use of amextravel any day.

How much for AF total for all those personal cards?
VS no AF
Citi Biz Costco .4 cb gas or
Chase Amazon .2 cb on gas
CIC biz 5X UR on streaming (varies) cell, internet

But full disclosure holding those and those Amex but green and BBP

Blue business plus has no annual fee.. The Green card with this revamp will I am assuming introduce some type of credit, whether it is amazon or whatever else that essentially negates alot of its fee, similar to how the gold card and platinum card have done this

AB
AB

Right but if you have a platinum you can (or at least you could) bring on an AU at no annual fee but it would just be the green.

I work for a University and have a .edu email so I pay student rate for prime, and I cant use amex at costco so this still wouldnt be a keeper. I’m sure I would be in the minority though. Really good refresh if they can get prime on board!

Same, but you’re only allowed the student rate for 4 years, regardless if you still have a .edu email or are still a student, so this is still definitely a keeper on the long term imo

They gave me a 5th year manually after I sent them a screenshot of my schedule for the upcoming semester. They told me I could do that in the same email that said my Student Prime was ending, so I didn’t ask for a special exception or anything.

Andrew

if your staff you can generally make a second email no problem.

Depends on if you can just swap to a second amazon account. maybe they won’t notice

You can keep the student rates after four years if you prove you’re still a student.

What do we think the chances are of an upgrade on the business green as well?

My Amazon Prime annual subscription literally renewed yesterday. I wonder if I should try and get it refunded and switch to a monthly subscription until it is more clear if this card would provide that benefit.

bob
bob

i wanna say amazon basically refuses to refund the Prime fee – i know they don’t pro-rate a refund…

Brandon
Brandon

“Paid members who haven’t used their benefits are eligible for a full refund of the current membership period. This refund will be processed in 3-5 business days.”

Amazon clearly will allow a refund if you don’t use the benefit before requesting the cancellation and refund. That quote is straight from the help section of Amazon.

Mike

I can confirm this. Had prime for about the first 6 months of last year (I don’t buy much from amazon, but signed up due to having 2 amex offers for 5K MR each – both triggered – 10K for prime @$99 then). Never used prime, cancelled and got immediate refund back to the Amex card. Offers never clawed back. Card had been closed in the intervening time – not sure if that made a difference, or if 6 months was enough time to avoid clawback. Reason I cancelled at the 6 month mark rather than wait a few more months was I was placing an amazon order which would have qualified for non-prime free shipping but amazon wasn’t offering that option cause I was prime. Had to cancel prime first, or I’d lose the ability to get the prime refund. Felt like Amazon trying to trap me into using prime by not offering the non-prime free shipping option.

I got refund several times.

Currently the only use for the card is to downgrade for a year or more to not get banned from Amex’s RAT team from Signup offers.

Omg.

Increase the cost of something and then make it a benefit. Amazon should be giving away prime since prime members spend more. But if you give away something people don’t value it.

So win win for amazon and amex. For the consumer I don’t know.

Also I have a gift of prime membership. Do you get cashback from portals for prime membership even if you use gift of prime?

Yet Another Redditor

Dang it.. My 30 days to cancel this card after the AF hit ends today.. Need to call and if it can be waived for now to let me hold on to the card..

Mark

Not only am I now interested in this card, I’m interested in Amex’s stock. They are stepping up their game which is sure to draw new cardmembers, and their personal savings (currently 2.1%) is also very competitive.

guy bucktastik
guy bucktastik

so…. buy puts?

Mark

It’d be more of a long-term hold than an options play. Just seems like a good future for Amex. Personally I’m shifting my spend from Chase, including downgrading CSR to Freedom. Not sure if other people feel this way, but the new Amex Gold made CSR a lot less attractive.

I mess around with KR options, usually covered calls. Whenever I buy and sell naked calls/puts (F, TEVA) it ends up reminding me that selling covered calls is the only/best way to make money in options 😉

Zachary
Zachary

If only Amex were more useful in Europe.

Joe

I agree, the CSR took some punched from the Gold, but the CSR’s travel protection is still the best in the game. I think the Plat needs a revamp to include trip cancellation/interruption insurance and baggage delay insurance.

Amazon Prime? where i pay a big fee to get the free shipping that regular free amazon offers?
and i get a TV service inferior to netflix and hulu and most anything else?
and items are way overpriced?
sign me up at any price!

Brandon
Brandon

I have got great deals through Amazon. I am cancelling my Prime membership this year though. Hoping to get through Netflix over the next couple months, so I cancel that as well. This card may convince me to sign up and keep it just for Prime though (I would get an extra 2% through my Prime Visa), so the benefits would probably pay off.

Zachary
Zachary

How is Prime Video inferior to Netflix? At least with Prime, if a title isn’t available to watch for free, you can still rent it most of the time. With Netflix, if they don’t have it, you don’t get it, period. Plus, last I checked Netflix, and this was a long time ago, because I canceled streaming in favor of Netflix DVD service, they had a really crappy catalog for those of us who favor art/foreign/non-Hollywood cinema over eternal formulaic remakes and superhero movies. (Not that Prime doesn’t have its share of crap, too, but its catalog is very extensive.) Still, I’m not crazy about the rising cost of Prime. Prime’s Roku UI is definitely infuriating, too.

Brian C
Brian C

You can rent from Amazon video regardless of whether you are a prime member or not

Zachary
Zachary

Good point. I forgot about that.

You really need to study up on the many benefits for just over $2.00/week. And my HD Fire Stick is great. Lightning deals, cell phone sales, using Keepa, music, Echo Dot… There is a lot more to Prime than you apparently have experienced.

Poorchurner
Poorchurner

If they do raise the fee is that something a new cardholder would be exempt because the first year AF is waived on my current Green? I just got my 25k SUB and don’t want any clawback.

Brandon
Brandon

A raised fee would take place immediately for NEW cardholders (ie applying as of the announced changes). The increased fee could be only for new cardholders, or usually in Amex’s case, when your next AF would hit. Though sometimes they have a few months of letting people get to keep their next AF at the lower price.
