American Express Green Card 45,000 Point Bonus Offer (YMMV)

9/5/20: Reports of this showing up frequently again.

Update 8/11/20: More reports of readers seeing this more frequently as well as Running With Miles.

Update 7/2/20: Seems like the 45,000 offer is showing up more frequently again. Green cardholders currently get an additional $10 wireless credit.

Update#2 2/20/20: Two tips from reader’s comments on getting the 45,000 offer:

  • For non-referral: go incognito and google search ‘amex cards’, click the ad link that appears on top, navigate to the Green card and it’ll hopefully be 45k. (I couldn’t get the 45k to show, but using this tip it worked.)
  • For referral: readers say using any regular referral link can get the 45k offer to show if you’re using VPN.

Update 2/20/20: Some are seeing the 45,000 points offer again via referral link. I’m not seeing this on mine (Chuck). Hat tip beckhsrules

Update 1/13/20: The increased bonus is due to end on 1/15/20 so last few days remaining

Update 12/14/19: Some people are seeing this offer (45,000 points after $2,000 in spend) but with a $150 away credit when using a referral link. Hat tip to intervested99

After months of rumors the American Express Green card has now been refreshed and is accepting new applications. The card is now a regular credit card, rather than a charge card. This is important to note due to how many American Express credit cards you can have. Update: It might just come with pay over time enabled as a default and still be a charge card. Still a charge card

Sign Up Bonus

  • $100 luggage credit from brand Away
  • 30,000 Membership Rewards after $2,000 in spend within the first three months (45,000 points seems to be available incognito mode)
  • Valid until 1/15/20

It’s also possible to get an offer of 35,000 points with a $150 luggage credit via referrals (don’t share your referrals in the comments below). 45,000 point incognito offer is a better option unless a loved one/family member is referring you I guess.

Card Benefits

  • Annual fee of $150 (not waived first year)
  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • 3x points on
      • Restaurants worldwide
      • Travel including flights, hotels, transit, taxis and ridesharing services.
    • 1x points on all other purchases
  • $100 CLEAR credit per calendar year
  • $100 Loungebuddy credit per calendar year
  • No foreign transaction fees

Our Verdict

Don’t think this card is worth keeping long term, a sign up bonus of 30,000 Membership Rewards points is OK but nothing special. The 45,000 point bonus available in incognito mode is much more attractive and I’d definitely recommend signing up for that offer ASAP if you see it. Keep in mind the sign up bonus is once per lifetime. As always please read this post on everything you should know about American Express cards.

Just got told by recon line that this is a credit card and not a charge card and so it counts towards your 4 credit card limit…

This worked for me. Un-maximize your browser window (on desktop) and resize the window so it’s not a standard dimension (like not 1600×900). Just make it whatever – 1521x 767 pixels for example. Then search for the amex green card in google. I got the 45k offer each time I did this but did not when I left it at the maximized screen resolution. Your browser passes the browser screen size through to the amex servers so they can fingerprint you more easily if you use a standard dimension whereas the unique dimensions will show you as a “new user” that’s never visited before.

It’s just a theory. I run a website and had a problem with bots from the Amazon web services cloud coming after my site. It was messing up my stats with my advertisers.

I finally figured out the pattern of the bots and they all had a series of non-standard browser resolutions. But they used the same few sets of non-standard browser dimensions on all the bots 🙂 So it was easy to figure out what was bot traffic and what was not based on the browser dimensions.

And I’m kind of a tech noob so hopefully the Amex tech folks are 10x as smart as me!

Good to know, but I tried and did not work for me. Using a device which has never been used probably a second choice if your trick does not work. So many phones, and tablets around… probably can find one to borrow for 5 min 🙂

Or you could just use a referral link. Those pull up the 45k bonus almost every time…

Not sure why this is news … 45k Green has pulled up almost 100% of the time for me using referral links for many months.

But it’s always shown up readily for anyone using a referral link. What happens when you don’t use a referral link doesn’t matter … I surely hope none of your readers are dumb/selfish/rude enough to not use a referral link when applying for an Amex card.

Pointing out that it is now slightly easier to get the 45k without a referral link is not only useless, it is actually determental (because it is just going to lead to people to forget to use referral links).

The only problem is that there is talk of popup being much more prevalent when clicked off referral links.. Just a theory for now, but it does seem convincing.

Whomp whomp got the pop-up.

Never had a charge card from Amex but I have gone through both Hilton cards (and upgrade offers after downgrading), both Blue Cash cards (and upgrade offers after downgrading), Cash Magnet. Currently put all organic grocery spend on Blue Cash Preferred.

I guess I had it coming.

Would Amex claw back the points if you cancel the card prior to the 1-year renewal to avoid the fee? Or do you have to keep it for a little over a year before cancellation and maybe get them to refund a prorated annual fee?

You should be able to cancel it after the first year renewal AF is posted. Never cancel in the first year.

If you’re all wondering why incognito isn’t working, try using a device you’ve never used before. Sounds crazy but these big companies “fingerprint” your devices even in incognito mode (track your software, operating system, display etc to create a unique fingerprint) I was able to get this offer on a tablet I’ve never used before
