American Express Green Card Has Been Refreshed & Now Accepting New Applications (45,000 Point Bonus)

After months of rumors the American Express Green card has now been refreshed and is accepting new applications. The card is now a regular credit card, rather than a charge card. This is important to note due to how many American Express credit cards you can have. Update: It might just come with pay over time enabled as a default and still be a charge card. Still a charge card

Sign Up Bonus

  • $100 luggage credit from brand Away
  • 30,000 Membership Rewards after $2,000 in spend within the first three months (45,000 points seems to be available incognito mode)
  • Valid until 1/15/20

It’s also possible to get an offer of 35,000 points with a $150 luggage credit via referrals (don’t share your referrals in the comments below). 45,000 point incognito offer is a better option unless a loved one/family member is referring you I guess.

Card Benefits

  • Annual fee of $150 (not waived first year)
  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • 3x points on
      • Restaurants worldwide
      • Travel including flights, hotels, transit, taxis and ridesharing services.
    • 1x points on all other purchases
  • $100 CLEAR credit per calendar year
  • $100 Loungebuddy credit per calendar year
  • No foreign transaction fees

Our Verdict

Don’t think this card is worth keeping long term, a sign up bonus of 30,000 Membership Rewards points is OK but nothing special. The 45,000 point bonus available in incognito mode is much more attractive and I’d definitely recommend signing up for that offer ASAP if you see it. Keep in mind the sign up bonus is once per lifetime. As always please read this post on everything you should know about American Express cards.

Should remind everyone that the Green card is a charge card and won’t eat into the 5 credit card limit.

Jon

I had no idea about this, got excited but a quick google search reveals multiple posts from reputable sources all noting that charge cards DO in fact count against 5/24. Anyone else care to weigh in on this?

Taco
Taco

It absolutely counts towards 5/24, but it does not count towards the 5 CC limit that Amex has.

chris
chris

5 card limit refers to how many revolver from amex you can get. not chase’s 5/24.

The AP article about the revamp curiously states that the Green will no longer be a charge card.

Reading comprehension failure:
“The card is now a regular credit card, rather than a charge card”

frogger

Looking at the page it says you can carry balances up to your pay over time limit. So it sounds like a charge card as pay over time is available for all charge cards. I think the difference is in the past you had to choose to sign up for pay over time and now it is there by default.

Alexander
Alexander

It’s def a charge card. “No Pre-Set Spending Limit: No Pre-Set Spending Limit does not mean unlimited spending. Purchasing power adjusts with the use of the account, payment history, credit record, and financial resources known to us, and other factors.”

I see the 45,000 with Incognito. Thanks, William!

Same here. Found 45k incognito on the first try. Not eligible, though, since I just got the card in early 2019 when the bonus was only 25k. Oh well, at least I got annual fee waived for the first year, but will cancel at the one-year mark. I was hoping the ubiquitous Amazon Prime rumors would be true, which would have been justification for keeping, but not worth keeping with the current package.

Now it makes more sense why they bumped the Gold card’s MSR up to $4k.

I just noticed this and came to check if anyone reported. Thank you.
Do you remember the specific time of that happening?

I think it happened yesterday. My BBP link shows the increase spend requirement but my Gold link still has the $2k spend requirement as of now

Think I noticed on Monday. It’s only been a few days and was definitely a weekday.

Just checked on my account, the old green card also convert to the new one with $100 clear and lounge buddy credit shown unlike the brg which they don’t change to the new product

I assume by calendar year they mean that loungebuddy and clear credits are $100 each per 2019, $100 each per 2020, etc. ?

My card also converted. I’d like to know how to get max value out of this new card before my annual fee hits (which is in about a month).

Got the 45,000 with incognito as well (after using VPN). My home IP wouldn’t show it (WV), but VPN is Louisville, KY

Very disappointing that they did not redo with Amazon Prime.
Feel free to chime in if you agree/disagree.

Soulespada
Soulespada

totally agree. Would have been a keeper card if they had that benefit. Toss the loungebuddy crap and add the amazon prime membership. It costs roughly the same but with the sign up bonus and the 100$ away luggage credit would be useful

Geo
Geo

Amex now owns Lounge buddy, so them giving away credits is just a free way to inflate it’s numbers and show the acquisition was good. No cost to them at all.
If you they had added free Prime, it would probably have been a brand new tier of Prime Membership not including free shipping or access to movies & music. It might have been the equivalent of adding a fifth family member to your account. And maybe free access to Woot deals. /s

Kevin
Kevin

The problem is Prime is too broadly useful of a benefit. They prefer restrictive credits.

Brian C

Problem is its Amex….if they did a $100 prime credit, there would be 1000 restrictions. It would only be good for covering items bought and sold by amazon, on a tuesady, when thinking about incidental travel or some nonsense….🤔

And then of course we would find a way around…Amex would then find out and fix it. We would all get upset..

I can’t handle this rollercoaster man!!! Why AMEX! WHYYYY

Wait, what were we talking about?

Oh ya, I also wish there was a $100 Amazon credit. So I agree….

MoreSun

The point is that you won’t use the credit. Every person in the US would use an Amazon credit.

Of note, the travel category is 3x on many more things than the Gold or Platinum. Both those are just 3x on flights “directly with airlines” or AmexTravel.

Green:
Travel: You will earn 2 additional points (for a total of 3 points) for each dollar charged on eligible travel purchases including airfare, hotels, cruises, car rentals, campgrounds, trains, taxicabs, rideshare services, tours, ferries, tolls, parking, buses, subways, on third party travel websites, and on amextravel.com.

Is a refresh counted as a New product ? I had and closed a green card in the past

MTPDC

No

Electroman

The real answer is “it depends”.
It’s not a new product relative to the very recent Green Card, no. However, if Irshad’s green card was opened long enough ago, this is indeed a new product. My first Green Card was opened in 1987. They’ve had several other Green Cards since then.

I have a 45,000 MR point offer without incognito.

sdsearch

Incognito is not necessary if you use a browser which doesn’t have any Amex cookies on it. The whole purpose of incognito is to have the browser ignore cookies.

So just because you got it with incognito, that’s because of the cookies not on your browser. It has no meaning for someone else who does have Amex cookies on their browser.

AJ

Only good for sign up bonus. Away is overpriced. I might try Clear but TSA Pre Check is good enough for me. I will probably never use lounge buddy credit. Travel and dining same as CSR.

beat2def
beat2def

Clear is AWESOME for LAX, JFK, Seattle, and Atlanta airports. Everyone and their brother now days has TSA precheck so it really helps to have Clear at JFK.

TheJstandsforJ
TheJstandsforJ

It seems to be very airport dependent. If you are at a major airport that is a well known cluster, it would be worth it (Clear doesn’t have ORD for some reason). For everything else it is marginal.

ncsam
ncsam

Meh, during commute times, the Clear line in ATL gets super long, which is part of the reason I cancelled it.

NK3
NK3

Being Seattle based, I think calling it “AWESOME” is a bit generous. I get it free from Delta, but would not pay for it. I routinely travel with my SO who refuses to sign up for it. I would say on average I get through security between 1-2 minutes quicker. At LAX this week it took me longer to use it (that is not the first time that has happened). I can think of maybe 2 times where it saved me 5 minutes. That marginal benefit does not meet my “AWESOME” threshold.

beat2def
beat2def

OK. Quoting “AWESOME” once is okay, but quoting it twice is condescending toward me and wasn’t needed.
Feel free to post your opinion just curb the snark/snide nature.
I felt it was very useful in my moments of flying out of the above mentioned cities and especially out of JFK.

NK3
NK3

My apologies. When re-reading my response, I agree the second “AWESOME” was unnecessary. I will try to do better next time.

As I routine Clear user, I do take issue with how it is portrayed on some travel blogs. While anecdotally it may appear to save time, I believe putting it to the test with one person going through the Clear lane and one going through the regular pre-check line provides a more honest test to its true utility. Having done that a couple dozen times now, I can honestly say it saves, on average, about 1-2 minutes. Add to that the somewhat limited network of participating airports, as well as limited hours at airports, and its utility further diminishes.

For those bothered by it, you are also giving your biometric data to a third party. I am not bothered by this, but my SO will not use it for that reason.

sdsearch
sdsearch

Actually, it’s useless at LAX for those who already have TSA PreCheck, unless they’re flying Southwest. In all the terminals except Southwests’s, CLEAR is only available in the normal check-in lines, not in the PreCheck lines.

Your comment is a bit unclear to me as you say “everyone and their brother” (rather “everyone else”) has PreCheck, but you don’t explain whether you do or not. If you don’t, perhaps it would have been better if you’d made it clear that it’s “AWESOME for those who don’t have TSA PreCheck”?

NK3
NK3

Agree that it is only good for the sign up bonus. While the earning rate for travel and dining is the same as CSR, I would argue that the limited market share of Amex in other countries makes the earning potential inferior to CSR. Also using CSR may be better in some situations for travel protections.

Matt
Matt

It has the same benefits as CSR no? $150 annual fee on CSR with the travel credit, so this evens out. And same 3x on travel. I’m debating switching over now because Amex points are more valuable than Chase to me now.

JJ
JJ

Except the CSR travel protections are much better

AJ
AJ

Exactly why I would pick CSR over this card. Plus I use UR’s for Resorts & cruises so it helps out with 1.5x redemption.

Matt
Matt

I always transfer them for more value but you’re right, if you use the 1.5x CSR still checks out

rf
rf

Also the CSR has PP. Arguably you can have PP from other cards (such as Amex Platinum), but PP, int’l acceptance, travel protection and 1.5c direct value are still pretty big perks
