[Back Now] American Express Green Cardholders Are Currently Unable to Refer Friends

(Update 1/28/21: Readers are reporting seeing these referral links and signup offers back again.)

A few readers reached out about the absence a referral link being available on the American Express Green card. All other Amex cards are eligible for one referral offer or another, including the business Green card, but the personal Green card stopped being able to generate a referral link as of around a week ago. You also won’t see a bonus offer FOR the Green card when using another referral link.

It’s unclear if this is a temporary thing or permanent, and one reader tells us that select cardholders can still refer, but it seems to be gone for most people.

Special referral offer on my Green card shows 12.5K per referral

When they dropped the Plat enchancements, they hinted at goodies for co-brand holders… so where’s the cheese?

Disappointed they didn’t do anything for Green holders given the benefits are useless for 21H1

Looks like referrals from other cards don’t pull up the Green card either Chuck. Like the post says, my Green card doesn’t generate a referral link. When I use the referral links from my Gold and BCP it doesn’t show the Green card as an option to apply for either. It still shows as available to apply for the card directly without a referral. Hopefully, they add back a $10 monthly credit or something as right now the card is nearly useless as a $150 travel card. I got excited last week on 1/18 when there was a pop up: “We’ve added something extra” and mentioned $10 monthly wireless credit. Of course, reading further down it mentioned it being through 12/31/20. I had hoped it was a typo and they brought that temporary benefit back but the “learn more” link brought me to the old page for the wireless benefit that expired 12/31/20.

Update: I’m able to generate referrals on my green card again and other cards are showing the green card as an option when referring.

Every time I see a post about the Green Card, I cannot help but think of U.S. Immigration policies.

I called to cancel last week and was offered 12,500 Amex points or $100 to keep my account open, both with a $1000 spend. I went for it hoping they revamp the card later this year. Doesn’t hurt to ask.

Gone on P2’s account.

Maybe they’re going to revamp it again. In the covid world and even in general it’s not worth a $150 annual fee with many free dining cards around

I agree. I called to cancel mine yesterday. I had made only 1 charge on it all year–the CLEAR membership fee; I didn’t actually use CLEAR much even pre-Covid but renewed it for 1 more year since it was nearly free after reimbursement. Even after I explicitly said I was cancelling because lack of travel makes it worthless, the rep was mentioning the benefits, all of which were travel-related. She also mentioned 3x on dining but evidently failed to recognized have the the Gold card that already gives 4x.
