American Express will add a new cap on spending for the American Express Platinum card of $500,000 per calendar year on flights purchased directly from airlines or American Express Travel. Normally these purchases earn 5x points and you’ll continue to earn 5x points on the first $500,000 in spend per calendar year, before it reverts back to 1x earning. Can’t imagine this affects many cardholders, but American Express is obviously bringing it in for a reason.

Would travel to the ISS qualify as travel? I’m dreaming about it and what I would do with the 250,000,000 earned membership reward points from the trip. I believe NASA accepts AMEX.
If you spend that amount on flights on a personal card, you might as well open the black card.
500k a year averages out at just under 10k a week. Perhaps a round-trip Emirates flight in first class every week would do it!
Can buy a couple of 737 Max airplanes for that much these days
If it was a lifetime cap instead of calendar year, it would think … let’s be real… my retirement is qt $50k at 34, so I am slightly worried about this cap.
Drats, foiled again.
I’m going to have to change my credit card rewards strategies. I’m going to start using the Citi Rewards+ card to buy individual Ramen noodles.
I wasn’t getting the 5X anyway, since I’d typically just buy the whole plane.
Challenge accepted Amex
I’ll have to quit simultaneously flying in three different planes at once.
