American Express Platinum Travel Discounts: Save Up To 75%

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • American Express is offering Platinum cardholders travel discounts on flights booked from September 10 – December 31, 2020. For travel September 1 through March 31, 2021. Maximum discount seems to be 75%.

The Fine Print

  • Discounts are applied to the base airfare.
  • Tickets are subject to applicable government-imposed taxes/fees and airline-imposed fees; if baggage, seat-selection or similar items were not included with the tickets, additional fees may apply.
  • Airline fare rules and restrictions and ticket terms and conditions apply and are subject to change at the discretion of the airline. Tickets are non-refundable unless otherwise indicated.
  • Tickets are non-transferable.
  • Applicable fares will display in search results on amextravel.com only if the eligible Card Member is logged into his/her account. Changes to tickets (if permitted) may incur an airline-imposed change fee, any difference in fare and (if calling to make a change) a $39 American Express ticket fee.
  • Cancellations of tickets (if permitted) may incur an airline-imposed cancellation fee and (if calling to make a cancellation) a $39 American Express ticket fee.
  • Special offer is valid for eligible bookings from September 10, 2020 through December 31, 2020 for travel from September 10, 2020 through March 31, 2021.

Our Verdict

You also earn 5x points on these purchases. Business Platinum cardholders can also get 35% points back if using points to book the flights. Unfortunately the discount is only on selected routes and most routes won’t show any discount.

For me, I had to use points for this to work.

How does this work exactly? Does the airline see the full price being paid with Amex paying 75% of it? Could you then re-use the value for whatever you want? Has anyone found any flights that have the discount?

Mark SAN to RDU was discounted about $40. Checked SLC and few spots in Mexico and HI but they had no change.

Lets be realistic here. Don’t you mean Amex paying 7.5% of it? The chance of finding a fare that Amex is offering to pay 75% of – or even 50% or 25% – will be a needle in a haystack at best.

So then this is like a scavenger hunt?

That’s exactly my experience and I thought that was because I live in Hawaii and flights always originate form HI.

Seems like a good stack with the $200 travel credit if you got it on your Platinum and the flights work for you.

Would this stack with $120 off $300 Amex offer when buying Delta flights?

no — needs to be booked directly with Delta.
