American Express Sending Out Amazon Echo To Some Platinum Cardholders

American Express have sent out some American Express platinum cardholders an Amazon Echo as a present. Along with the Echo they received a card saying the following:

Platinum Card Membership has its rewards.

We value your loyalty and look forward to continuing to serve you in the coming year.

To show our appreciation, we are pleased to offer you this complimentary Amazon Echo, a wireless, 360-degree immersive sound speaker that responds to your voice.

Thank you for being a valued Platinum Card Member. We hope you enjoy your gift.

At first I assumed that this gift was just sent out to Platinum cardholders that had hit a specific spend threshold, but that isn’t the case with lots of people with high spend not receiving the gift.  Reddit user bonestamp pointed out that people who were targeted had their American Express Platinum card set as their default card on Amazon.com. That being said not everybody with their Platinum card set as default have received an Echo or the shipping notification and some without their Platinum as a default have received an Echo/shipping notification so it’s possible that it’s just random.

I think it makes sense to target this towards people with their Platinum as the default as the Echo is designed to drive more sales towards Amazon. If you received a free Echo or the shipping notification, let us know in the comments.

I did receive one. I’m a plat holder for 12 years now also my Amex set as the default card on Amazon.

CSR on chat noted a couple things to me when I brought this up…

“These offers are rolled out for our card memebers in a regular timely manner…

The offers get available based on card’s charging interests and other social media activities as well.”

I received one, Plat holder for 6 years, Amex holder for 14, high threshold spender on this particular card.. I do have my Amex set as default on my Amazon prime acct, although it changes throughout the year depending on where I’m trying to meet my spend.

I have Amex Platinum as my default amazon payment method (due to the 3x MR offer) but I haven’t received any notifications.

However, I am an Amazon Prime member & I have 2 Amazon Echos associated with my account already.

I didn’t receive one, and I’ve had my Amex Plat for 2 years and have Amazon Prime too. Maybe they targeted Amex Plat cardholders without a Prime membership?

I didn’t receive it but my friend got one yesterday. He’s a plat holder for 5+ years…maybe that’s what they meant by “loyalty”

Interesting. I just got a message that I had an amazon package waiting for me. I didn’t order anything. I’ll see if it is an Echo when I get home.

Is there a way to check with Amex if my account was targeted? I recently moved and just updated my address on the Amex website so would have likely gone to my old address even if I was targeted.
