American Express Sending Some Platinum Cardholders Gift Cards Worth Up To $400 (#AmExAppreciates)

American Express has a program called #amexappreciates and on occasion some Platinum cardholders are sent out a gift card. Normally the gift cards are $100 or $200 to select brands, but today there is a report of a cardholder receiving a $400 gift card to Robert Marc NYC. There are also reports of the usual smaller $100 or $200 cards being sent out to different brands as well. Unfortunately these are all targeted offers and you just need to be lucky enough to be chosen by American Express to be eligible. I’ve never been able to work out how American Express determines who is targeted as sometimes people with little to no spend are targeted and othertimes it’s people who spend $100,000+ monthly.

Are these personal, business, or both?

I am on SSI and money is really tight right now, that money would mean the world to me, I could buy some presents for my Grandchildren and some other people that I Love so much. I would be so very grateful for the help. God Bless you all !

Why in the world do you have a platinum card if money is that tight?

Gfy. Do you have an Amex platinum card? This isn’t charity, it’s a randomized gift/incentive for cardholders

I don’t even understand what she is trying to beg for? Does she think amex is basing who they send the gc to off of the DOC comments?

Raiderette
Raiderette

Why do you think it’s begging? I didn’t get that from her comment, why would anyone find it offending, she wasn’t talking to anyone in particular asking for money, she’s sharing her struggle or maybe she was confused and thought it was an American Express site or something.. And who cares if she has a platinum card, and was struggling, maybe she had gotten the card when her circumstances were better at the time. Doesn’t mean she was utilizing her credit just because it’s in her wallet. People need to chill on the judging for real

The American Express Platinum card carries a $450 annual fee… That is BEFORE you do any spending. And for someone who is on SSI to pay a $450 fee kust for the privilege of carrying that card only to then claim that “money is right” would make ZERO sense.

Raiderette

Touché… good point @AKQJ10 guess I got too sensitive with the “begging” part of others comments, to even consider that hefty annual fee that needs to be paid, maybe not the best choice of a credit card.

It isn’t a good point though.

Simple math: Amex Plat + Schwab Plat = 1100 annual fee and 2k in cash out value. This is ignoring every other benefit.

The plats are major money makers. If I was on SSI I would absolutely try to churn my ass off harder than I do now.

1 Use Saks credits for presents. Have one of more Grandchildren convert to Eastern Orthodoxy on or about 1 January so that next year’s credit can be used for January 2020 Xmas present.
2. Big Uber credit this month — holiday party with Uber Eats.
3. Check Flyertalk for airlines still allowing GC purchases. You would be the first to use these for actual gifts.
4. If you haven’t received a retention offer in the last 13 months, call into Amex for one. Ask for something that does not require minimum spend.
5. If all else fails, consider downgrade to no-AF card.

Ladies and gentlemen, the true consumer that uses the Amex Plat. It is no longer a status of wealth or good credit.

Got a $250 off full price stuff to St John Knits a few months ago, there is a retail store near me but never knew it existed. St John is high end womens clothing and I am a dude so that was weird

These aren’t really as great as they sound. When I got one, it was a coupon (not gift card) for $200 at some high-end women’s store online. It was not valid on sale items, and the cheapest regular price item was a shirt at approximately $250. I checked ebay, and some folks were trying to sell the $200 coupon for about $10, and no one was buying it.

Amex is worse and worse on customer service these days. Cancelling my Platinum.

I heard they are doing this for self-referral people to say they were sorry for having unclear rules and blaming customers for their own issues. /sarc
