American Express Is Sending Out Upgrade Offers

Update 07/09/18: Looks like another round of offers have gone out. In particular try navigating to the Hilton Honors Ascend page when logged in to see if you have any upgrade offers to that card. Hat tip to @GreatTwitcher

American Express has sent out a number of upgrade offers on their credit and charge cards. Check your e-mail to see if you’ve received an offer. Offer might also show if you click ‘view all personal credit and charge cards’ on the American Express website.

Blue Cash To Blue Cash Preferred

  • Bonus of $150 after $2,000 in spend within 3 months of upgrade. Annual fee of $95 is also waived.

Have seen a bonus of $250, but that was without the annual fee being waived so basically the same offer.

No Annual Fee Hilton To Hilton Ascend

  • Bonus of 75,000 points after $2,000 in spend within 3 months of upgrade. Annual fee is not waived.

Haven’t seen an upgrade offer on the Ascend card yet, but they were extremely common on the Surpass (basically the same card). Previous bonuses have been 100,000 points though. Some people have been able to get this to show by navigating to the Ascend page on the American Express website.

Everything You Need To Know About Upgrade Offers

If you have any questions about these upgrade offers, I’d strongly recommend reading this post.

Our Verdict

Usually it’s possible to get the sign up bonus on these upgrade offers, even if you’ve had the card and gotten the bonus before (although this isn’t always true and it doesn’t seem like you can really fight it if the bonus doesn’t automatically post). In those cases these bonuses can be worth it, otherwise I’d generally just wait for bigger public bonuses to come along as these are typically better than these upgrade offers. The advantage of the upgrade offer is you keep the account history and also no hard pull is done.

Waived fee on the Platinum plus 50k points is amazing.

Waived annual fee on the platinum?? I’ve never heard of any kind of offer- upgrade or otherwise- that has offered that. I would check that closely, though if it’s true that’s an amazing offer. 50k points PLUS $400 of airline credit and maybe you can use some of the uber credit. That’s insane.

Nah. This is targeted. My Hilton card, Ed and OBC are old enough to be eligible for upgrade and I’m not seeing any.

I received one to upgrade my PRG to Platinum. (Which I previously had and downgraded) 25000 MR points for $2K spend in 3 months. Expires 3/31 – I’ll probably do it closer to that date after I do my spend on my new Amex Hilton Business card.

Will,

To clarify, when you say “Usually it’s possible to get the sign up bonus on these upgrade offers, even if you’ve had the card and gotten the bonus before“ are you saying it’s sometimes possible to upgrade back to a card you had previously and still get the upgrade bonus? For example, if I had a Plat before which I got a welcome bonus for, downgraded to green card which I hold now, and take advantage of the green to Play upgrade bonus that I see, it’s possible I’d get the bonus despite getting welcome bonus previously on Plat?

Thanks

Crossing my fingers that maybe upgrades from Ascend to Aspire will pop up. We’re staying at the Grand Wailea at the end of March, so I could certainly use that resort credit to get my money’s worth out of the annual fee. Didn’t think we’d see any until at least July and was contemplating just calling to upgrade rather than give up a spot in x/24 when I’ll fall to 4/24 on March 1st.

Nothings. 🙁

I received a 40k offer to go from Green to PRG which I’ll probably take advantage of given previous offers for upgrade or new was 15k.

Just to add a little color, in our family’s experience, you can get churn upgrade offers over, like, 6 months or longer when they’re offered, but if you do an upgrade, GET THE POINTS FAST, DOWNGRADE, then UPGRADE AGAIN (when it’s still being offered online), you won’t get the bonus.

Amex seems to leave a “hole” that you could possibly double-dip if you do the first upgrade fast enough (before the expiration of taking them up on the upgrade), but they’ve seemed to close it last year. So don’t waste your time trying a second during the same offer period. But I think you’re more than safe churning upgrades over time when a new one is offered.

I got no fee Hilton to Hilton Ascend 75K. Note: I don’t think you can see the upgrade if one is using the “old” Amex website, I think you have to be using the new, (horrible) website. Keep checking – these offers will pop up. Today I also downgraded my Delta Plat to Delta Blue. I’m hoping I get an upgrade offer for that card in the next month or so.

Would the Amex blue cash upgrade count against 5/24 as a new card, or no?

I’ve had a 60k MR offer to upgrade from Green to Platinum for about a month. Shows when I login on desktop under the Amex offers. Although I got a mailer last week for much worse 25k MR to make same upgrade, which I found odd.

Given new Amex sensitivity to folks downgrading after a bonus posts, I’m hesitant to pursue 60k offer as I’d want to downgrade back to Green after meeting the spend and getting the bonus. Don’t see that going over well with RAT.

It’s true, you can’t really do that anymore. But why not open it anyway and keep it open for the year? The 60k MR plus the $400 airline credits more than offsets the annual fee.

Jonathan
Jonathan

My concern is RAT noticing the downgrade right before annual fee hits. I suspect they are watching for that.

So don’t do it then. Do it AFTER it hits, it gets refunded as long as the card is cancelled/downgraded within 30 days of it hitting. That means the card will have been opened for 13 months, I don’t think that will raise a red flag. In their new T &Cs, it specifically mentions closing a card within 12 months as a form of abuse, which to me means if it’s done after that it’s fine.

I think what that clause was trying to eliminate was people who went too far- they would sign up for the bonus, and wouldn’t even keep a card open for the whole first year- they would try to downgrade/cancel after just a couple of months, and get at least part of the annual fee refunded. But to me, I don’t see how any issuer can have a problem if you keep a card open for more than a year.

Good point re: the 12 mos T&C. I’m just a bit cautious as I have other Amex cards and do not want to risk closure of those. And those have various downgrade history as well.

Excuse my ignorance, but where can I find these DPs of Amex sensitivity to downgrading after bonus posts?

Logged into my Blue for Business card account and got a pop up with an offer stating pre-approved for the Blue for Business Plus. The offer was 20K MR points for 5K spend in 3 months and 0% APR for 15 months. I just finished my 13th month with the old Blue for Business card.

“(although this isn’t always true and it doesn’t seem like you can really fight it if the bonus doesn’t automatically post)”

For about a month now, when I log in to my OBC account, I see an offer to apply to the PRG and get 50k MR after spending 2k. I’ve had the PRG before of course, though it’s been 3 years. I don’t think it’s an upgrade offer, it’s just a targeted offer to apply (which is too bad because of 5/24). Will- are you saying that I can’t trust the fact that the “once per lifetime” language doesn’t appear in my offer? They can still deny me the bonus and I’d have no recourse? This seems bizarre to me, and seems like a valid CFBP complaint if it’s not in the terms of the offer I use to apply.

Eduard

Will, could you clarify? I have a BCE right now, never had a BCP in my name. If they sent me an offer to upgrade and I took it. Then downgraded back after a year or so, would I be eligible for one of the new card member bonuses on the BCP?

Or is the only reason to take one of these pretty much because you can get a “second bonus” if you already got the initial new card member bonus.

CtownBin
CtownBin

I’m pretty sure it’s the latter- meaning, it’s worthwhile only if you had the card before. This is because getting one of these offers will disqualify you from getting the regular signup bonus later, since the regular terms say “not available if you have had this product”, and you will have had it. The unique thing about this offer is that the language is not in THIS one, which means you can get the upgrade bonus even if you have gotten a regular bonus previously.
But, if you haven’t had the card before, the regular offers are usually higher.
