American Express To Continue Refreshing Cards, Adding More ‘Lifestyle Benefits’

In the latest American Express earnings call CEO Steve Squeri touched on refreshing cards value propositions and increasing engagement in categories that they have typically seen low engagement in. Squeri goes on to say that American Express will continue to add more lifestyle benefits into 2021.

And as we’ve talked about, we’ve been talking about refreshing those value propositions from a lifestyle perspective.

And so while not getting into specific details on value propositions for competitive reasons, what we’ve done in the short-term is some stopgap measures in terms of various credits and extension of benefits and things like that, which are support – doing two things: number one, showing our customers we’re thinking about them; but number two is actually getting more engagements in categories that we didn’t have as much engagement in. We’re – increased our engagement in wireless, and we increased our engagement in streaming.

But you will see us continue to morph our value propositions into next year by adding on to our premium-value propositions with more lifestyle, non-T&E aspects and developing other value propositions for other products and services

It has already been rumored that American Express plans to add Equinox Variis app access for American Express Platinum cardholders and it’s also rumored that American Expresss in the process of finalizing other benefits & partnerships currently as well.

I would like to see a charge card version with a 2x multiplier like BB+ for personal use, no extras, and no fee.

I imagine AMEX further expanding their affiliate marketing. Probably by adding more VC funded unicorn companies (or their money losing public corpses) focused on staying home rather than travel (uber, AirBnB, etc)

Throw in some Epic Games fortnite credits, blue apron, Peloton membership, and reddit premium. That’ll make AMEX the hip among the youngsters.

The Variis app is trash to me. I hope they continue some of the streaming, and mobile perks. Uber is marginally good, if you remember to use it each month for Eats. The Airline credit is good, but hard to use if you aren’t flying.

I’d like to see the airline credit be more flexible. I’d would be nice if they make their travel category flexible from tolls, hotels, trains etc.

Has anyone figured out a way to maximize the $20 wireless credit? My wireless bill is paid for by work, but I was hoping there was some way of getting the $20 benefit

I’d love to see the blue cash preferred up the 6% back on groceries go from $6k to $12k… that would be great!

$1000 for groceries? Back in the day a family of 5 was less than $200 and that was pushing it. Glad I’m not raising any kids now.

We as a family of four have a hard time staying under 500 a month. Meat prices have been killing us. We shop at Aldi to try to keep prices down. Or shop the sales at the other grocery store in town. But yeah, prices have gotten insane in recent years.
