AmEx Cardholder Opportunity: Free Money or Free Coffee

We recently gave you an introduction to AmEx offers. There’s another great opportunity at Dunkin Donuts. Amex is offering $5 back on a $5 purchase, so that’s a free $5 at Dunkin Donuts! The offer expires on 6/30/2014, but be sure to save this offer right away, either via Twitter or your Amex online account, as these offers have quotas and they do fill up. As of today  this offer is still available via twitter. We can leverage this offer two ways, for free food or for free money. Let’s start with the Free Food option.

Free Food

You can go to Dunkin Donuts and spend $5 or more on food, and you’ll receive a $5 AmEx  statement credit. Or you can simply go online to dunkindonuts.com and buy a $5 gift card and use it the next time you’re in Dunkin Donuts. Rinse and repeat for each registered Amex card. The physical gift cards at dunkindonuts.com come with fees attached, so we wouldn’t want that option, but you can buy a $5 e-gift card with no additional fees added. You can also use the mobile app, more details here.

Note: Often times, buying e-gift cards does not work to trigger the AmEx credit, however numerous Slickdeals  and Fatwallet  members confirmed that for this offer e-gift cards do work. I took the leap-of-faith and ordered an e-gift card, and – viola! – I got an instant confirmation email from Amex thanking me for using the Amex offer. I love instant confirmations! A few days later the $5 credit posted.

But suppose you have lots of Amex cards (like me) and you can’t possibly eat so many donuts, or suppose you’re a die-hard Starbucks fan who wouldn’t dream of buying your coffee elsewhere. This is where the free money option comes in.

Free Money

If you buy a Dunkin Donuts gift cards you can resell them for 80% of their value, so a $5 gift card will net a $4 profit. See giftcardgranny.com for all the various gift card resellers.

A couple of pointers:

  • You’ll need physical gift card in order to be able to sell it; Dunkin Donut e-gift cards are not eligible to sell.
  • Many gift-card-resellers only buy gift cards with a minimum face-value of $20 or $25. Abcgiftcards.com will buy any amount with no minimum.

The easiest way to use the free money option would have been to go to a Dunkin Donuts store, buy a $5 gift card, then go online to dunkindonuts.com and add $5 to the gift card with each registered Amex card. The problem is that the minimum load amount online is $10.This leaves us with two options:

  1.  $4 Profit Method: Buy a $5 gift card in-store. Proceed (in-store) to add $5 to the gift card with each registered Amex card. Store-recharges have no minimum, so you can add $5 to your gift card. You should also be able to do a split-tender transaction. So if you have 5 Amex cards, you may be able to buy a $25 gift card and ask the cashier to split the payment between the 5 cards.
  2. The $3 Profit Method: Buy a $5 gift card in-store. Proceed online at dunkindonuts.com and add $10 recharges to the gift card with each registered Amex card. Each $10 on the card is worth $8 upon selling. So the end result will be that you’ll pay $5 and you’ll get back $8 from the gift-card-reseller, for a final profit of $3 per Amex card.

You’ll also earn whatever points/miles/cashback your card earns on Dunkin Donuts purchases.

Get an extra 4% profit by selling to cardpool through topcashback.

This will increase your profit margin slightly. If you don’t already have an account with topcashback use our link here. We receive a small commission if you do so!

What I Did

I have dozens of Amex cards to use for this offer; some of my own, some authorized-user card, some of sharing family members. So far I’ve been doing the $4 profit method in order to maximize the deal. I feel uncomfortable going into Dunkin Donuts with dozens of credit cards, so I just do a few cards each time I’m passing by a Dunkin Donuts store. Luckily I have lots of Dunkin Donut stores nearby. I may get lazy and use The $3 Profit Method on some of my remaining cards. I also sent a few $5 e-gift cards as a gift to my brother who frequents Dunkin Donuts.

I’ve been taking advantage of these Amex offers to make lots of money. What about you? Have you been able to make use of these Amex offers? This is a guest post from Chuck, he received $50 via Paypal for contributing this post. Find out how you can do the same. He’ll be hanging around to respond to any comments below.

This offer comes up right after the itunes offer of $5 of $5 spend. The itunes offer was too complicated to buy gift cards, as their site is flying.

Yeah, that offer was great for itunes, but wasn’t able to be liquidated like this DD offer.
