Amex Offers Now Sends Targeted, Location-Specific Offers for Restaurants

In the new slew of Amex Offer deals that were released today, as is common on the first of the month, people have been noticing something a bit different. Amex now targets customers with offers to a very specific nearby restaurant. These are targeted to work at one specific restaurant within the chain, not chain-wide. They are typically offers for a discount of 15-30%, max $20 in discounts. (I assume they can be used across multiple visits to the restaurant, but I don’t have any myself to check the terms.)

For example, you might see an offer to get 20% off at one specific Dunkin Donuts store, and the offer (ostensibly) won’t work if you use at a different location. Most of these restaurant offers are for smaller restaurant chains which may only have a few locations total, though there have been some reports for a specific store within a larger chain too.

Amex is probably targeting restaurants near you based on your home address. Some have noticed offers which aren’t even at the closest location; it’s possible the restaurant chain is trying to increase traffic to that specific location.

trick to get around the system. if you are trying to pull up a specific offer, but its not in your location. in the app click on “offers near me” and then pan out until you see the whole america. then zoom back in to whichever area you want, and you will see a whole bunch of new “targeted by location” offers

I don’t think this is new – I’ve seen Amex offers for very specific restaurants that only had locations within a few miles of my home for the past couple years. Maybe this is the first time it’s applied to national chains?

I live in NJ and received an offer for a restaurant in Queens that was only valid for a week. Who is spending $30 in tolls to save up to $20 at some mediocre restaurant in Queens?

Hmm…the offer terms don’t state a specific location within a restaurant though.

For example while visiting Los Angeles I checked and saw an offer for $45 off $150 at Lawry’s The Prime Rib. They do have 4 U.S. Locations (Beverly Hills, Chicago, Dallas. and Las Vegas).

Reading the offer terms it doesn’t state it’s limited to any specific location, even though the offer popped up while visiting Los Angeles.

Do other peoples’ offers state the offer is only valid at a specific location? Or is it just a guess that it’s location specific based on receiving an offer while nearby?
