Card Details

Our review of the American Express SimplyCash Plus Business Credit Card

Card has no annual fee. Card earns the following rates:

  • 5% cash back on purchases made in the following categories combined: U.S. office supply stores and on wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers; bonus rate is earned on a max of $50,000 in purchases per year
  • 3% cash back on one category of your choice from a list of eight categories (on up to $50,000 per year), including:
    • U.S. gas stations
    • U.S. restaurants
    • U.S. purchases for advertising in select media
    • U.S. purchases for shipping
    • Airfare purchased directly from airlines
    • Hotel rooms purchased directly from hotels
    • Car rentals purchased from select car rental companies
    • U.S. computer hardware, software, and cloud computing purchases made directly from select providers
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases

Our Verdict

Bonus has been down to $400 since one year ago, good time to get the card now with the $500 if it interests you. We have seen targeted offers for a $1,000 bonus in the past, though I don’t recall seeing any such offers recently.

$500 is certainly attractive, just keep the $15,000 total spend in mind. The good thing is that this card earns 5% cash back on useful categories so there is less opportunity costs involved that other big spend cards.

Before applying for this card or asking questions, make sure you make yourself familiar with these 21 things everybody should know about American Express credit cards.

Anyone have DPs on if Venmo earns 3%? Checked Payments Workshop

Did you try it yet?

Venmo doesnt earn 3%. I did a lot of venmo. 1% only

Roomipay codes as “Merchandise & Supplies – Computer Supplies”. Wonder if this would then code as 3% cashback and you could effectively profit 1% plus sign up bonus. (assuming rate stays at 2%)

Nevermind, the accepted list of providers is found at : https://www.americanexpress.com/us/content/rewards-info/business.html

Any idea if there’s an expiration date on this offer? Beginning of the year kinda sucks for OSS sales, which usually come in the 2nd half of the year. So just wanna go about timing this right to maximize.

Since this is cashback, rather than MR earning, this should be relatively safe to MS on with VGCs, right?

That’s what I’m wondering as well.

What’s to stop them from just taking the bonus cash back offer away similar to MR if they deem you unworthy and guilty of MS?

Why does it matter that it’s Cashback and not MR? Won’t we have the same problem trying to MS to get this bonus? Especially with such a high spend threshold. Plus, all the office supply stores have Level 3 Data with AmEx. I’m really curious how people are going to meet this $15k threshold.

FWIW the Staples promo this week cleared my wife’s BCP upgrade bonus (which posts as a statement credit as soon as requirements are met), so at the very least, unlike SIMON, Staples isn’t automatically flagged. Also they def got L3 data from it. (I can see 2 gift cards were purchased on her AMEX account)

With AMEX… who knows for sure, but, I’ve had the Simply Cash business card for about 6mths and I’ve done almost every Stapleseasyrebates deal and haven’t had any problems with it… however… I’ve also purchased a lot of equipment, supplies, motel stays etc. My bonus posted… no problem… hope this helps somebody…love in Christ.

Office Depot and Staples send Level 3 data so you’ll see something like this on the statement:

Office Depot $1232.33
-Visa $300 Gift card
-Visa $300 Gift card
-Visa $300 Gift card

I assume if you’re buying a ton of VGs they’ll shut you down

Do I qualify for this bonus?

Can someone suggest a consumer Amex credit card that one should apply for along with this card? one member of my household doesn’t have Amex relationship.

You would want to apply for a charge card as you are limited to 1 credit card app per day with Amex. See if you can get an all-time high (or close to all-time) through mailed offers, incognito, or pre-selected.

You can get 2 AMEX Credit cards- not just one in a day. 2/90 is all that matters. I’ve gotten 2 credit cards on same day from them everytime I apply.

Got this and the Hilton 30 mins ago- auto approved for both.

A rookie question: do you need a business to open a AMEX businnes card? I get targeted offers for their business cards but I dont have a business so I am hesitant to open one and make only personal charges on it. Any advice would be appreciative 🙂

How hard is it to obtain approval for Amex bus cards? $5000 in online sales (EBay/ Swappa) sufficient, any phone call or document requirements?

Has worked well for Chase bus cards for spouse….thanks!

Haha, pretty much all you have to do is type in your business name and click submit. I havent ever heard of anyone getting denied for that reason or even asked about their business. Needless to say no business docs needed.

So basically add 5% to the cashback for the first $5000, then additional 2.5% cashback for the next $10,000 within a calendar year. Assuming you meet the spend limits this looks like a good cashback card for $15,000 spend but bonus categories overlap many other cards so not a long term keeper. I wonder if someone can PC to a BBP+ from this?

I was told by an Amex rep that you cant product change between a cash-earning card and an MR-earning card.

Anyone know if manufactured spending is as strictly prohibited on an AmEx cash back card like this one as it is on the MR-earning cards? Can it be used as free-from-worry as the various 5X Chase business cards for purchasing PIN-enabled bank-issued debit cards at Staples, for example?

Applied and approved immediately. 32/24
