The Offer

Direct Link to offer (contains our Target shopping affiliate link)

Target has a special offer for those signing up for a REDcard:

  • Signup for a REDcard debit or credit card and get a coupon for $25 off a $100 shopping trip.

The Fine Print

  • Valid for applications in-store or online.
  • Offer valid between 6/17/18-6/23/18 8/5/18 – 8/11/18.
  • Coupon will be valid through July 31, 2018. September 23rd, 2018
  • The coupon will be mailed to approved cardholders with their REDcard.
  • Excludes alcohol, Apple products, Bose, CVC clinics and pharmacy, DSLR cameras and lenses. Elf on the Shelf, gift cards. Google products, GoPro, LEGO, LG OLED TV, mobile contracts, prepaid cards, Sonos, Target Optical, Tylenol pain relief and Weber.

Our Verdict

If you’ve been meaning to signup for a REDcard, this would be a nice opportunity. It’ll also help those looking for a new version of REDcard now that the prepaid REDcard version is soon being discontinued. You can get the credit version if you’d like, or save yourself the ding to your credit report and get the debit version.

REDcard doesn’t typically have any sort of signup bonus; people get it just for the 5% off at Target, faster shipping, and longer return window. They do sometimes have small bonuses available via shopping portals for signing up for a REDcard. Currently, I see Swagbucks offering $4 for signing up for a REDcard via their landing page, should stack with the coupon deal. Let us know if you see any other offers like that.

I guess they’re trying to convince the Redbird people to switch before that card gets shut down. I already have a debit Redcard but didn’t get any offer like that when I signed up years ago, just did it for the 5% savings. But I was bemused to see in the list of exclusions, mixed in with some typical high-value brands, Tylenol of all things insisted on being excluded! LOL

“Excludes . . . Elf on the Shelf.” Dammit! That’s the only thing at Target worth buying…

Yup, just what I was thinking. Good thing they put that restriction on there or everyone would have given them a run for their money

hard pull, soft pull?

RedDebit is soft pull. Bring a void check from your checking account to Target.

Lines in Target are gonna be crazy next week.

Good news is coupon will be valid through July 31, 2018 as stated above.

I meant people signing up for Redcards backing up the lines. It takes at least 5 minutes for the debit card version.

Why not do it online, with or without pants on, at home? Get a portal cashback to boot.

I worked at Target as a cashier in high school. I rather help out a cashier to meet their “quota”.

Plus, a lot of people who’ve been thinking about it will finally sign up in-store once their cashier tells them about this deal.

Can I sign up for a new debit card if I have a current debit card? Should I cancel my current card?

Is there anyway to avoid even soft pull? Will showing them the check in the store avoid the soft pull ?
Is soft pull equivalent to opening a checking account in most cases?

Not sure about the first one. But I’m pretty sure soft pull is not the same as opening a checking account. For example, checking your credit score might result in a soft pull.

there is no reason to avoid soft pull for a non credit issuer and even in the case of a cc issuer they likely do soft pull you regularly anyways.

whether or not they pull Chexsystem though (the checking account one) is interesting.

No, no, and no.

Soft pull doesn’t hurt your score at all. All your credit companies do soft pull you don’t even know about it 🙂 nothing to worry about.

Wondering if the coupon for $25 off a $100 would be transferrable (aka resaleable).

Coupon fine print says “for original recipient only… void if… sold…” Bleh.

Of course. I finally signed up last week after years of avoiding store cards.

I am overseas now. Wont be back in the states til July 6. I see the online link to apply for debit card. I know all my info plus linking bank info. Can I apply online from overseas? Or will they ask me to provide a voided check?? THAT I do not have with me.

Some grizzled vets, the ones who get all misty-eyed when they recall those happy days of a couple years ago, are curious to learn whether the new debit card can be reloaded via Visa/MC debit cards. Any word?

Also wondering this. Had been using the prepaid Redbird to meet debit transaction requirements for a few bank accounts… Other suggestions?

Ann

Like the other people said, this isn’t a loadable card. You might still be able to pull that off with Bluebird at Walmart, though I’m not knowledgeable on the latest restrictions on it.

The debit card really just links to an existing checking account. The debit card doesnt store any of its own value.

It works via EFT. I got notice about verifying deposits.

Grant

Anyone sign up online today? How was the process?

jz

Just did it. it was pretty easy. Less than 10 minutes.

Grant

Application was quick and easy. Had to verify checking account info and then was instantly approved.

can you move funds out of account? is this similar to netspend/insight where you need to pull funds out since it doesn’t allowing pushing?

Does the debit card count for 5/24?

MoreSun
MoreSun

No, only credit cards do.

Don’t use Safari to apply. I got stuck on the Instant Verification popup (thanx Yodlee!) trying to insta-link the checking account, except the damned thing is unresponsive (neither the Verify button nor the Show Account Number link is clickable). Had to close it, in spite of the explicit warning, and wait for the trial deposits in 3-5 biz days.

Yu

Does it run ChexSystems verification? In other words, does it possibly impact me to open checking account and get bonus in the future?

Ann
Ann

Looks like yes. The now-discontinued prepaid Redcard did not require credit checks or Chexsystems checks, but the debit Redcard reportedly does use Chexsystems (DP: https://www.reddit.com/r/Target/comments/3bfvuo/am_i_the_only_customer_who_has_expressed/csm60w9/ ).

There are gift cards for target which get you more than 7% off. I wonder how this card is useful.

MoreSun
MoreSun

For the $25 and always getting 5% off. Nothing like the trips where you have to use a 2% card because you bought a drained gift card. Happened to me too much!

Blake

Anyone Else get your decision will be made 7-10 days in mail for the debit card?

Ann
Ann

Do you have your Chexsystems report frozen?

Blake
Blake

No I don’t. Never had this happen for any credit card. Always instant approval and this wasn’t even for the credit card. It was for the debit card.

ronjon
ronjon

same response…..7-10 days on the debit card application…i always get instant approval on all credit card applications…i guess i’ll have to wait and see…

i wonder if i will still receive the coupon if they approve after June 25th…
