Barclaycard Removes Extended Warranty & Price Protection Benefits

Update 9/27/19: Full details of the Barclay changes can be found in the new post Barclaycard Overhauls Card Benefits – Mostly Negative Changes.

Update 9/26/19: Mention of cell phone protection being added for the Arrival+ card on 11/1. Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver and Identity Theft benefits will also be enhanced (e.g monitoring dashboard that scours the internet and dark web). Hat tip to reader VG. These changes will also apply to the AA & JetBlue cards.

Original post: Barclay’s is sending out notice on recent statements for Arrival+ cardholders and for Uber Visa cardholders about an upcoming change, effective November 1, 2019:

Your extended warranty and price protection benefits are being removed, however claims can be submitted for eligible purchases made through October 31, 2019.

The Arrival+ and Uber cards were the only Barclaycards that had Price Protection. There are likely other Barclay’s cards with Extended Warranty, and I’d guess those are ending in November as well.

There’s also mention in the Uber Visa notice of cell phone protection changing, but I don’t have details on the change.

We see Citi ending their Price Protection coming soon, on September 22nd. Citi kept their Extended Warranty benefit on most cards, only removing it from the Double Cash and Dividend cards. Citi is ending a whole slew of travel benefits on all cards as well.

Possibly the insurance provider used by the banks jacked up the price on the benefits causing the banks to remove as many benefits as they can.

CNB Crystal has price protection if you find a lower price in 60 days?

Note that VISA’s price protection program specifically excludes any ads from the Internet.

So does this mean items sold online will not count? For instance, amazon.

David

No, it means that the lower price must come from a non Internet source, like a printed store ad from the local Best Buy.

I beg your pardon? PP on CSR?

Chase IHG still has price protection

See below DP, other MC cards are removing it too. Looks like a decision by MC. It that’s the case, Chase IHG won’t survive either.

I wonder if this applies to the uber card’s phone protection plan if you pay your bill with that card?

Dear card issuers, please stop. It’s already dead 😭

The note on my uber card was a bit more cryptic: “Your Cellular Telephone Protection is changing. Roadside Dispatch benefit is being added to your account. Your Price Protection, Satisfaction Guarantee and Purchase Assurance benefits are being removed”. Satisfaction Guarantee is return protection and Purchase Assurance is coverage against loss and damage. Both covered the first 90 days. There is no mention of removing warranty coverage.

Regardless, I use this card mostly for restaurants and that isn’t going to change.

“The Arrival+ and Uber cards were the only Barclaycards that had Price Protection.”
My Barclaycard Rewards card also has price protection. I don’t see any note on my most recent (9/10) statement of this being removed but assume I’ll see the notice on my next statement.

I got a similar message on my recently closed September statement for my Jetblue Plus card too.

Chuck, can you do a summary on the best card for protecting large durable purchases (say > 1k or 5k and not a vacation package)? These probably can be broken down by portable/non-portable (ie a theft/loss protection is not valuable on a dryer purchase but extended warranty is). I feel price protection has been eliminated, but i would still value a solid theft/loss/warranty for a large purchase over a percentage point of rewards.

Just fyi, I got that notice on my no-fee arrival card. That one has also offered price protection.

So if the Arrival+ wasn’t already in my sock drawer it now would be.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is the difference between the Arrival+ and a 2% no fee card? Is it just the SUB and not having an FTF. Seems light for a $89 card.

Not sure sorry

It’s technically 2.1% because they refund 5% every time you redeem. It’s also a World Elite MasterCard, and the only no-AF 2% flat cash card that can potentially be WEMC is the Double Cash, which is by far the worst of the 2% options because of the 3% forex fee. WEMC gets you a few nice perks like Boxed and Lyft credit that you can’t get elsewhere

Whether those benefits are worth $89/year is a different question.

Doesn’t it also have trip cancellation and 6hr trip delay insurance?

The email I got said that’s going away.

I see them raising the max benefit amount of the cell phone insurance payout.

So both my daily drivers are being stripped of my most used benefits in price protection and extended warranty (Citi DC & Uber Visa)

Anyone have a recommendation moving forward?

In order of my preference:

AmEx ED/EDP, 1.2/1.5 MR . Good protection, fair cashback, good ext.warr. 1-2 yrs, depend on original warranty
ATT / Plus, Online 2/3 TYP Fair protection, good cashback, good ext.warr. 2yrs regardless original.
boa cash rewards, online 3% Fair protection, good cashback, fair ext.warr. 1yr
CFU 1.5 UR Fair protection, fair cashback, fair ext.warr. 1yr

Sorry, what is the ATT card? Can’t figure that one out

Seems like one of the AT&T cards from Citibank (TYP are Citi reward currency, and they are the issuer of the AT&T-cobranded cards, so that adds up)

Amex is removing extended warranty from their no annual fee cards.
