- To qualify for the 2500 bonus points, you must have net Qualifying Purchases totaling $500 or more at grocery stores using your BBVA Compass American Express Card post to your account between November 17, 2017 and November 22, 2017
- Merchants are assigned category codes based on what they primarily sell. A Qualifying Purchase will not earn extra reward points pursuant to this offer if the merchant’s code is not in an eligible category. BBVA Compass reserves the right to, in its sole discretion, determine whether a particular transaction is a Qualifying Purchase and which purchase category applies.
- A “Qualifying Purchase” is any purchase, Internet purchase, phone or mail order purchase, bill payment, contactless purchase (purchase made by holding your BBVA Compass American Express Card or other device up to a secure reader instead of swiping your card), or small-dollar purchase for which you are not required to sign, made with your BBVA Compass American Express Card, that is processed or submitted through the American Express payment stream.
- Payments of existing card balances, balance transfers, cash advances, ATM transactions, convenience checks, Interlink processed transactions, fees charged by us (for example, finance charges, and related service charges, if any apply), payments made for prepaid and reloadable cards such as certain gift cards, payments made for payment instruments that can readily be converted to cash (for example, travelers cheques, money orders, wire transfers, and similar products or services), are not Qualifying Purchases for purposes of this offer.
- Offer limited to 2500 extra points per customer
- The 2500 extra points will be applied to your account 10-12 weeks after the end of the promotion period. Your account must remain open and in good standing to receive the bonus.
- This offer may not apply if your card has changed to a different type of card within the last 12 weeks or changes before the 2500 extra points are applied
Our Verdict
So now we can all let out a collective groan about the fact that the good old days of BBVA 5% are over. In any case, it’s nice to see them sending out targeted offers. If they keep it up, it could be a value-add to the card. Only other use I see for the card is using it for public Amex Offer deals since the card stopped it’s 5% periods and became a straight 1.5% card.
You’ll earn $25 back on a $500 purchase in addition to the regular earn of 1.5% for a total of 6.5% back ($32.50 total). Perfect for a $500 Visa gift card purchase, hopefully the gift card exclusion in the terms won’t exclude those.
