BP Driver Rewards: Earn 3x United Miles Per $1 Spent [New Partnership]

Reader Brick was filling up at a BP station and noticed a sign announcing a new United MileagePlus partnership where you can earn 3 miles per $1 spent on BP gas as part of their driver rewards program. It doesn’t look like the program has been officially launched yet as the website given (http://mybpstation.com/united) currently errors out. It’s also not clear if this will stack with the existing program that offers 10¢ off per gallon for every $100 spent on BP fuel.

Now Live – more details here

If it doesn’t then assuming a 16 gallon tank that 10¢ off saves you $1.6 per $100 spent. $100 spent under the United program would earn 300 miles, that’s significantly better (basically buying miles at 0.5¢ each). Even if you double the tank size you’re still looking at 1¢ per mile which is great value for most people. That being said this program is really only useful if you normally fill up at BP anyway and that will depend on the gas price in your area and what else is available. As always make sure you use a credit card that earns at a high rate on gas purchases.

This is now live but significantly worse. Up to 3 miles per gallon (not per dollar) and that too if you fill the premium gas.

Yeah it’s per gallon and only up to 2 miles/gallon if you link a card (3 if purchasing premium). From the T&C:
Driver Rewards members who select United MileagePlus® as their reward type in their account will earn 1 award mile per gallon of BP fuel purchased at participating BP locations. Link a form of payment to your Driver Rewards account to earn 1 additional award mile per gallon of regular or mid-grade fuel purchased (for a total of 2 miles per gallon), or earn 2 additional award miles per gallon of premium grade fuel purchased (for a total of 3 miles per gallon). Maximum 20 gallons per fuel purchase. Member must enter their Driver Rewards number or swipe a linked card at the pump. Not valid with other offers earning or redeeming cents off per gallon. Not valid where prohibited by law. MileagePlus award miles accrued, awards, and benefits issued are subject to the rules of the United MileagePlus program.

I was surprised that this didn’t launch on March 1, so I called the BP Driver Rewards help line this evening to ask if they had more details. They said they expected the site to be up sometime in the next week. It sounds like there may be additional limitations that make this worse (only earn 3x on premium fuel, need to ear 1200 miles before you can transfer). Though they also mentioned that you could redeem miles for up to 50 cents off per gallon – likely not useful to many, but could be a good way to use up a small amount of miles.

It’s about time! BP is my main station. Now I’m praying that this and the $ savings/gal stack up.

Isn’t IHG’s partnership just with Shell Fuel Rewards?

I pretty much fill up at BP and Speedway with discounted SVM gift cards. I assume I can use those, so this could be essentially 11% back (6% GC discount, 3% from United, 2% from CC on GC purchase which yes I know is actually 2*.94, but math is hard)

Yes, you can swipe your membership card (or enter your phone number) and then pay however you want. You can link credit cards so swiping the card will activate your membership, but that is not required.

Yeah wouldn’t expect it to be considering BP sold all its California operations to Tesoro after the Gulf incident

$1.60 savIngs per $100 means gas is more than $6/gallon. At $3/gallon, $0.10/gallon yields over $3.30 in savings.
