The Offer
- Receive a sign up bonus of $150 when you open a new super rewards checking account from Provident credit union and complete the following requirements and use promo code KNBR :
- Perform 10 debit card transactions per month (excludes ATM transactions).
- Have a monthly direct deposit or automatic credit of at least $500.
- Maintain enrollment in e-Documents (electronic statements and notices).
1.36% APY
To receive the 1.36% APY you need to complete the bonus requirements every month. You only earn this 1.36% rate on the first $25,000 in funds (after that it’s 0.08% APY) and you’ll receive a 0% APY if you don’t meet the requirements.
The Fine Print
- Offer may expiry at any time
- Not eligible if you are a current owner or signer on a Provident Credit Union personal or business account or if you have been an owner or signer on a Provident Credit Union personal or business account within the last six months
- One bonus per household/business
- Eligible accounts are:Â Super Reward Checking, Provident Checking, Simply Free Checking, or College Checking; all other checking accounts are not eligible for the bonus
- Must complete requirements within 90 days
- Bonus will generally be deposited within 120 days of account opening
- All bank bonuses are treated as interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them
Avoiding Fees
Your best option is to open the Super Reward Checking account which has no monthly fees or minimum balance requirements and also earns the 1.36% APY when requirements are met.
Membership Enrollment $10
If you enroll with provident then you must pay a $10 membership enrollment fee. Although apparently it’s possible to get this waived if you apply online.
Early Account Termination Fee $0
None of the provident checking accounts come with an early account termination fee.
Our Verdict
It should be noted you can’t use transfers or bill pay within 30 days of opening the account.
Provident currently offers a similar bonus but it gives you $100 and then another $250 in round up debit card transactions, I don’t think the round up program is worth considering as you are forgoing credit card rewards so this is the better bonus.
The upside to the other bonus is that you can use a Bill Pay to replace the direct deposit, although I’m pretty sure any ACH transfer will trigger this bonus requirement as well so not a massive deal either way. I passed on the $100/$250 bonus because I try to get at least $100 in value (and I would have only gotten $90 after paying the $10 joining fee).
Here’s what I’ll do:
- Become a member online (that way I avoid $10 fee)
- Sign up for the super rewards checking account, using a 2%+ credit card to fund the account with $1,000 (+$20)
- Wait thirty days and then complete the bonus requirements, will just make 10 regular small purchases using debit card and change my employer payroll (easy for me to do so now) (+$150)
- Wait for bonus to post
- Close account
In total I’ll net $170, I’ll probably actually try to use my Discover it Miles card and then I should be able to net another $10 bringing me closer to $200. Not bad at all.

This appears to be active with new terms, it’s due for a refresh I think. It now requires 2x monthly debit or credit card $300 purchases along with the 2x $500 direct deposits and e-doc enrollment. I can’t verify the CC funding.
Will update on the weekend
I wonder if this promo is still active? It appears it’s available to do every 6 months, may be time to repost if so? Thanks
Hi Doc,
Which is a better offer, the $150 bonus here or the $100 offer which allows $5000 cc funding?
Is the latter a better offer considering the cc cash back? Thanks!
They both only offer a maximum credit card funding of $1,000 now. I just didn’t update the other post yet.
Got it. Thanks for the clarification!
Also, to clarify the opening deposit limit: the application page states a maximum $3k “aggregate” deposit. I have to assume that up to $3k is possible if you open more than one acct, but I only did the “super” checking, and the limit is $1k.
“I was assured my donation to an affiliated charity would qualify me for membership and acct bonus even though I am not in CA. I did not get this writing. I have since been told I’m ineligible for the bonus, not being a CA resident”
Hey JT,
It is a real kick in the pants when that kind of thing happens. Always feel like a need a certified notary or something on the line with me when I call CS departments.
I’d be interested in what organization you found where a donation allowed you to become a member. I do live in California but outside of 12 counties where residence allows for membership.
Thanks in advance
Humane Society of Santa Clara. Provident has a long white list of organizations which supposedly will qualify. They have since closed my account/membership for failing to provide documentation which they never actually asked me for. Although my cc will be get refunded (no spend rewards), I’m relieved I’m not still trying to get my money out more than a month later.
TL;DR – not worth the hassle, even if I was local.
No bill pay either, which is not spelled out anywhere I could find. After my one & only scheduled BP failed w/ no notification or explanation, I had to contact them to find out no BP allowed in first 30 days.
Eligibility: I was assured my donation to an affiliated charity would qualify me for membership and acct bonus even though I am not in CA. I did not get this writing. I have since been told I’m ineligible for the bonus, not being a CA resident.
I can confirm that cc funding is limited to $1k, despite the fact that it says $3k on the front page of their own acct application. Also worth noting that transfers, even trial deposits from an outside bank, and billpay are unavailable for the first 30 days, so your deposit is essentially frozen for a month. I’m waiting out the 30 days and closing it, not worth the hassle as it turns out I’m ineligible for the bonus anyway. The $10 membership fee is waived for online applications.
Bummer. Can you still bill pay out during that time? What made you ineligible for the bonus after signing up?
Would ACH work for DD here? What’s considered an “automatic credit”? And, funding this from a Citi card would likely result in a CA, no?
Funding with Citi almost always codes as cash advance, yes. Not sure about ACH but I imagine it will work.
It looks like simply setting up an auto transfer $500+/mo from within the Provident end will meet the automatic credit requirements.

Bah. Roundup offer is a scam. Based on signature based debit transactions only.
Sadly, they only allowed $1000 CC funding when I signed up a few days ago.
The roundup offer is gameable from the looks of things. 100% match in first 3 months up to $250? Hmm. Amazon… Going to sign up the SO for the roundup $100+$250 offer…
Did you sign up in person or online?
Really? Damn, must have changed the CC funding amount. Updating post now.
So which is it $1k or $5k?
Opened an account today and it was a $1K limit
Appreciate the data point. Bummer!
Did you fund it over the phone or online, or is there only one option?
