Uber used to sell gift cards via their app, they stopped selling them at some point in 2015 (during or after this American Express sync offer I believe). But they are finally making a return with Uber announcing that you’ll be able to purchase Uber gift cards from one of 35,000 retail locations (Walmart, Target, CVS & more). The gift cards will be arriving in the next few weeks and you’ll also be able to purchase them online here soon.
The gift cards themselves will not expire and can be redeemed directly in the app. The cards start at $15, have a maximum value of $200 and are applied as credit to your account. You can find a full list of stores stocking the cards here. One thing to keep in mind is that the credit can only be redeemed within the U.S. and cannot be used on UberEATS, UberRUSH or on family profiles.
This is good news for us, as it means you’ll be able to purchase Uber gift cards from stores with a credit card and earn a category bonus on your purchase (e.g by purchasing them at a grocery store you could earn up to 6% cash back). I suspect we will also see some discounts on these cards in the future, as well as people selling them on third party gift exchanges.
I’m unsure how this will work with the Capital One 10th ride free deal (e.g if you put partial payment of your Uber ride on the card will it still count as a ride or does full payment need to be the Capital One card?)
well its about time. jesus. Lyft has been all over starbucks. I hope Uber busts out a promo.
Spotted these at Wal-Mart last week.
Glad to see they are already in store
