Our Verdict

Keep in mind Starbucks recently moved to a new rewards program, 150 stars is still enough for a free handcrafted beverage or breakfast sandwich. Although it used to cost only 125 Stars for any item at Starbucks. Good deal if you buy things from Starbucks anyway and can use the $20 credit normally. There are other Starbucks deals as well, such as:

First they devalue the Starbucks rewards program and now they cheap out on the Chase Pay offer. It was 250 stars last time (though it was more than one reload).

Check your Chase offers for 5-10% at Starbucks.

BoA also has a 10% discount. I do Starbucks for the S/O, but now prefer to reload through gc’s from sites such as Bing, e-rewards, etc.

Celia
Celia

You can’t use BoA with Chase Pay, but good to know for future use.

I agree that discounted gift cards through Microsoft is a great way to go. I also used to do Discover discounted ones periodically when there weren’t any deals around. Starbucks can get pretty expensive if you go there often.

I used to only redeem for $8 sandwich boxes so I valued stars at ~6 cpp. I will probably only redeem for venti drips now, which is still a devaluation (~5cpp at most places.)

Mikey
Mikey

Nobody likes a devaluation. But I’m withholding final judgment until I see if the earning opportunities somewhat compensate. For example, occasionally I used to receive offers for 25 bonus stars for making any purchase. This week Starbucks bumped it up to 30. So although it’s not the 40 which would now make it equivalent to earn the 200 point salad or sandwich in five purchases at least it’s a move in the right direction.

Mike

FWIW, I now redeem 50 stars for a ham and cheese croissant. That gives 7.5 cpp, which is more value than I got in nominal terms when I used to redeem 125 stars for a souped up $9 Frappuccino, and far more value in real terms (given that the $9 drink was worth nowhere near $9 to me).

MrObvious
MrObvious

Probably healthier for you than a $9 souped up Frappucino also! That must have been 3500 calories!

I also redeemed for food sometimes, but I’m not sure their sandwiches were really “worth” $8 to begin with. The age old cpp problem.

Oh, starts tomorrow. Whoops.

They’re are cards that give back 10% to load Starbucks. Many BofA and chase cards have it.

Didn’t see the offer on CHASE Pay, then noticed in your post that the start date isn’t until tomorrow 4/25. Just bought a $15 Starbucks card at Kroger, many of you should be seeing a 200 fuel points digital coupon in your grocery account for this and a handful of other vendors. $15 is the minimum on any of the selected gift cards to trigger the 200 fuel point bonus. Plus another 60 since today ends the 4X.

I just tend to use the Cash app and save $1 each time I get something at Starbucks. Not a bad offer though.

raekwon

Do both.

T

Can you use the cash app debit and still get stars? How does that work?

raekwon
raekwon

I do it by paying partially w/ a registered Starbucks card and then pay $1.50 (which ends up coming to $0.50) with Cash Card.

arizonapv
arizonapv

How do you manage to get them to do a partial payment? Every time I’ve tried this, they put the whole amount on the Starbucks card. I’ll say, yeah, thanks, but I wanted to do a partial payment! Even with asking ahead of time, they don’t seem to be able to do it. Edit: I just got my Cash card yesterday. Do you need to have at least $0.50? I wondered why you put $1.50 on the card instead of some other amount?

raekwon
raekwon

re: partial payment… easiest way to do it is by transferring the exact amount you want to spend from one registered Sbux card to a different, empty one. (That can only be done on the Starbucks website, afaik. Transferring in the app will transfer the full amount, at least on Android)

re: $1.50… that’s the minimum purchase price you can spend on the Cash Card to get the Boost. When you use any Boost, you still have to have at least the full amount in your Cash app account. The discount is applied after.

So for instance, today I got a grande coffee and a blueberry oatmeal and the total came to $6 even. (I pre-checked the total by pretending to order in the app.) So, I transferred $4.50 to an empty Sbux card and paid with that first at the register. The remaining balance owed was $1.50; I paid that with my Cash Card and with the Boost applied, it only deducted $0.50 from my Cash app balance.

Clear as mud?

arizonapv
arizonapv

Very clear explanation. You answered everything very clearly. I wondered how you knew how much the total would be so you’d know how much to transfer to the Starbucks card. Never thought about doing a pretend order. Very clever! I am familiar with loading the Starbucks card. Thank you for the explanation. It is most helpful.

I’ve got the Kroger boost going right now and it let me know that if I switch boosts it will no longer be available. Miss getting $1 off at coffee shops in the meantime

But getting $7.50 back on a $75 money order is a better deal, especially considering I put it right back in my account.

Morgan

I just ordered my Cash app debit card and selected the $1 off, too. Great deal!

I just got my Cash app debit card yesterday and wondered how I was going to just charge a $1.50, so yeah, this is a great tip!

I redeem my reward with 20 shots latte with a bunch of add-ons, which usually comes up to over 30 USD

i dont even want to know how that tastes

Lolz you’re kidding right?

joE
joE

No he’s not. Used to work at Starschmucks and a mom and daughter would come in every day and order a grande, aka medium, caramel latte. They would ask for 20 pumps which filled up the cup a little over half. after you poured the espresso shot there ware barely any room for the milk. In a large cup you can easily fit 30 pumps.

Sounds like the fast track to Type 2 Diabetes

Espresso shots cause diabetes now?

MrObvious

No, but the 20 pumps of Caramel sauce will sure do it!

Kenny

“Pumps” refer to the flavor add-ons/sweeteners–not espresso.

Maybe a noob move but I got the email and immediately loaded up the Starbucks app and did the $20 load. THEN I looked at the fine print of the offer and see that it starts tomorrow… why oh why would you not put that front and center in the email message when you send an email about an offer that isn’t yet in effect yet… ffs…

GL

I typically find Starbucks drinks completely overpriced anyways, but find the new sweet spot in the bakery items. Now I get a $3.75 ham and cheese croissant for 50 stars. I drink unsweetened tea and coffee most of the time anyways and where I work there’s always an endless supply of free coffee and tea =)

Jason
Jason

I’ve started using the Square Cash app just for coffee. I don’t know if it’s targeted or not but I have a “boost” on my card that gets me an unlimited $1 off any order from a coffee shop (~1 hr wait time between orders to prevent gaming). Daily starbucks black coffee becomes $1 and change. Not bad.

Nothing on the Chase Pay or Starbucks apps yet to confirm this is valid. Always like to see this so I know it’s not just targeted.

same here, I don’t see it anywhere

Same here, just reloaded $20 before figuring this out. Oops

For those that see the offer, do you see it in the chase pay app or the starbucks app? What menu do you go to to see it?

Nicky L.

I received an e-Mail from Starbucks mentioning the offer, wifey did not receive an e-Mail.

PH

+1 on not seeing bonus star offer; I do have a 5% cash back offer though on Chase Pay for reloading

Taz
Taz

I didn’t see the offer anywhere, but I did a $25 load anyways. I will let y’all know if/when it posts.

Also, as someone mentioned, there are some sweet spots in the awards chart now. The ham and cheese croissant is a good one 50* for $4.08 (with tax) = 8.2 cents/point. This means that the 150 points would be valued at $35.50 (150* + 40* for using the $20 + plus the original $20.) Not a bad ROI!

Chris
Chris

The ham and cheese croissant is listed under “Hot Breakfast” on their website, not sure if it was listed in the “Bakery” section previously. Can anyone confirm you can get the ham and cheese croissant for 50 stars?

TSM
TSM

Yep just added it in the app for a mobile order and on the checkout page it says “Use 50 stars”.

Amy
Amy

On the app you need to pick the ham and cheese croissant listed under the bakery items, not the one listed under hot breakfast for it to be 50 pts.

Seems like this offer may be targeted!

A few questions

Is it still the case that stars don’t really mean anything until you have a Gold membership?
If I add 150 stars to my account, can I redeem them or do I need to be Gold first?
I have a coupon for 250 stars from Spotify… if I redeem that and then add the 150 here, will I have Gold membership and 400 stars to redeem, or does achieving Gold reduce that amount by 300 so I will only have 150 to redeem?
Thanks in advance!

Celia
Celia

That part is ending, annoying as it is for those of us that busted our tails. You should have 400 stars to redeem.
**
Previously, you had to reach Gold Level — 300 stars — to be able to redeem a free drink or food item for an additional 125 stars. Starting April 16, customers can cash in their Starbucks stars as soon as they get them. Like before, 2 stars will be earned for every dollar spent.

arizonapv
arizonapv

This is great news. I thought you had to be a Gold card member before you could redeem any points at all. So, with the new rules, what exactly are the benefits of being Gold?

Celia
Celia

There are none anymore that I can see. Maybe double star days will be still for Gold, should find that out next week. It does stink for those of us that kept up our 300 stars a year to maintain status. But good for those that don’t frequent Starbucks. They think that the loyal members will stay and new customers will go more. Personally, I think they just pissed off the loyal customers. 🙂
