Rumor: Chase Freedom Unlimited 3% Signup Offer Beginning Soon

Reddit member u/IOwnSixStaplers, an employee of Chase, reports that the Chase Freedom Unlimited card will soon get a 3% bonus offer on select categories. We don’t yet know which categories or what the limit will be. This sounds to be a limited time offer, not a permanent feature (though it might become that eventually).

Another Reddit user has a bit of a different spin to the 3% rumor whereby Chase will again offer the 3% signup bonus deal which they ran last year. That offer gave 3x Ultimate Rewards points on all purchases for the entire first year of card membership. The timing makes sense as they ran this offer roughly a year ago in April.

(Update: Multiple other reports in the comments here are confirming this rumor. One report there mentions a $20,000 spend cap which essentially limits the max bonus to 60,000 points on $20k spend which is 30,000 more than usual. Basically a 30k signup bonus with a big $20k spend requirement.)

Separately, u/IOwnSixStaplers mentions that the Freedom card might be soon phased out. Existing cardholders will remain with the 5% categories continuing, but it’ll be phased out for new applicants.  Note, this part was mentioned more speculative than the 3% bonus offer.

I don’t put a whole lot of stock in the rumor of Freedom being phased out. One of the two 3% offer rumors are likely true, maybe even both of them are true.

Might this 3X also apply to the business version, Chase Ink business Unlimited.

Quick question guys.

I have both the CFU and CF for a number of years now. Could I apply for another CFU?

If not, can I cancel my current CFU and apply for another one?

If it’s a signup offer you wouldn’t get the 3% for pc of a regular Freedom to it?

I will pass until I become targeted for the 30K points after $500 spend either on the Chase FU or the conventional Chase Freedom.

My SO got in on the “3X On Everything” offer last year and we have been using the hell out of the card racking up UR.

If they are now capping at $20k on their new offer, then that is wack. We did $15k easily every statement period.

Same for my SO. Spread usage out among other cards that had equal or greater earnings as needed, but it was nice having a go to card with a consistently high return. Our UR balance is fat even after some transfers for int’l airfares. Going to miss this one.

It’s almost like they realized people like you were killing the card because it was too good to be true

Only “almost” though.

I’m not following the math in this article. The update states a $20,000 spend cap which limits the bonus to 30,000 points. At 3X wouldn’t you get 60,000 points with $20,000 spent?

If there were no sign up bonus, you would normally earn 1.5 points per dollar. So if you spent 20k, you would get 30k points. He’s saying since the extra 1.5 points caps at 20k spend, it is the same as if you got a 30k sign up bonus, plus the normal points for your 20k spend.

Makes sense. Thank-you.

…”which limits the bonus to 30,000 points”…
Regular: $20,000 x 1.5points/$ = 30,000 points.
…”At 3X”…: $20,000 x 3points/$ = 60,000 points. By at 3X, you would understand that this is twice the 1.5X.
In other words, 1.5x is the regular points you would receive, additional 1.5x is the bonus part which is 30,000.

Yes, but you’d normally get 30k points anyway so the bonus is only 30k points.

CF definitely got a visual update some time back… makes me think the OP does not know too well about the Freedom card.

I smell a lawsuit coming….Chase Freedom Unlimited 3x bonus could be construed as no limit to the 3x.

I just got under 5/24. Will it make sense to get Freedom first?

depends if you would rather have 3% on everything up to 30k or 1% plus 5% categories… play with the math and see which makes more sense for you.

but is Freedom best card as first Chase card? or Southwest is better? I don’t want CIP because I already get 3x on travel through Wells Fargo Propel with no annual fee.

The value of the categories for one year is low vs. getting a $500+ signup bonus.

$500+ bonus on which cards? CSR and CSP?

Yes, or some non-Chase cards with similar bonuses

Neither, in all likelihood, especially the freedom. You’re better off getting a card with a big sign-up bonus like CSR or CSP then product changing that to the no annual fee freedom after a year.
