[Expired] Citi Cardholders: Get $30 when you Make 3 Paypal Purchases [Targeted]

Deal has expired, view more Citi deals here.

The Offer

Citi is sending out an offer via email:

  • Make at least three purchases of $30+ each with Paypal using your linked Citi credit card and get a one-time $30 statement credit.

The Fine Print

  • An eligible purchase is a purchase made when PayPal is the payment method, except for peer‑to‑peer transactions, purchases made with convenience checks, cash advances, and items returned for credit.
  • Your purchases must post to your account between 6/6/18 and 7/22/18.
  • The statement credit will be applied to your account within 2 billing cycles after the eligible purchases are posted.
  • To qualify for this offer, your account must be open and current when the statement credit is applied. If you convert to another Citi product, you may no longer be eligible for this offer.
  • Offer is non-transferable and only available for the account noted in this email.

Our Verdict

Super easy offer to meet since so many retailers accept Paypal, easy $30. Offer seems to be targeted, might be only sent to those who do not have a Citi card in their Paypal login.

They don’t explain in what way it’s now easier to link a Citi card to Paypal. Regardless, you should be eligible for the $30 bonus irrespective of how you link (or linked) your card.

So I got this offer. But there isn’t anything I want to buy right now. Any suggestions on how to trigger this bonus best with least work to keep the entire sum or have the expense quickly and effortlessly bounce back to me?

Are there any gift cards I can buy with Paypal to satisfy the 3 transaction requirement?

I was targeted for a $10 back after using your chase card. Of course I don’t have a chase card, yet. I’m pretty new to the credit card game. Chase doesn’t like to approve people with under a year of history.

Has anyone not targeted with the email tried to go directly to PP and manually link their Citi card, and get credited? I realize this may be a bit too new for most to have already jumped through all the hoops, including making the 3 transactions.

Very interesting, yet DoC, there’s a major disturbance tonight in the force that’s going to cause major pain for a lot of your readers — the apparent collapse of The Plastic Merchant. Even if we buy the claim that the top honcho is hospitalized, that doesn’t explain checks bouncing again, purchase orders (from several days ago) not processing…. etc. So very sad. The note sent out tonight by a “Molly” only makes matters more surreal. Am thinking to cancel everything.

News broke 13 hours ago, via miles to memories…. then Danny Deal Guru soon thereafter. Not buying it that DoC didn’t know.

We retweeted about it before MtM or DDG. Didn’t do a dedicated post on it because technically I’m on vacation and don’t know enough about it.

Can you please post the email? I didn’t receive it but was waiting on a $3k check. Kinda freaking out…

Jim, Sorry to hear you too are caught in limbo…. If you happen to get that check, it’s likely to bounce. (As DoC is curiously awol on this one, see milestomemories)

(To your q, here’s the astonishing note from yesterday, 2:45 pm est. Vague subject line, “update” — which came out of the blue for me. Hadn’t received anything previous, and didn’t know about the apparent tpm meltdown til learning of it via ddg)

Dear Seller,

Unfortunately, Mike is very sick and has had to be hospitalized. We are working on things and hope to have an update for you very soon. Sorry in advance for any issues this may have caused, and please be patient with us.

Sincerely,
Molly

Thanks, Havai. Definitely not looking good but I knew the risk when I signed up. Now to see what I can do about trying to recover some of those cards…

No wonder my checks for this months rent did not get delivered 4 days after the scheduled date. Now plastiq is even avoiding to pay the late fees i had to pay cuz the checks did not arrive. Today i made rent payment and had to cancel the payment from plastiq to avoid eviction. I do not think i will use it again.

All I got is this “10 off a purchase of $100 or more at Wayfair.com” when you use the code XXXXXX when you checkout with PayPal.

Has anyone attempted this rolling Samsung Pay into the mix? My goal is to go to my Paypal account, add my Citi card as a payment method. Since my Paypal account is already in my Samsung Pay wallet, if I then make those three $30 or more transactions utilizing Samsung Pay with my Paypal card selected (which will draw from my Citi card), will those 3 transactions qualify? I’m concerned, as I’m currently having trouble with a similar Paypal/Samsung Pay promo….the one where you link your Paypal account to Samsung Pay, and then make sure it either has a bank account or DEBIT card attached, which triggers a $5 promo balance in you Paypal account. Samsung Pay is then supposed to sweeten the deal whereby, after making 3 in-store transactions with Samsung Pay and your Paypal card pulled up, you’ll get 1500 Samsung Reward points. That’s the equivalent of maxing out 1.5 months of Samsung Pay transactions. I made the 3, but only one has registered, and it has not triggered the promo, i.e., it still shows 0 of 3 qualifying transactions have occurred. A chat with Samsung Pay customer service went well, and they’re looking into the matter…sounds like they may credit the 3 transctions manually. Paypal sent me email receipts on all 3, so I do have proof they occurred.

Samsung/Paypal for $5 does not trigger a $5 promo balance but it reduces the balance charged to you card. For example: I signed up for the same promotion and made a purchase for $30 but my checking/debit card account only got charged for $25. No promo money deposited. This is better, no hassell on redeeming on next purchase.

Make sure you give 5 mins between each Samsung Pay use for it to trigger separate transactions. Any transaction within less than 5 mins counts as one transaction.

here is the general rule when it comes to payment tech platforms. operate EACH ONE within its own silo. never cross breed and daisy chain via link after link after link. when u do, ur assuming all tech layers from totally different companies having crazy good synergy with each other. highly unlikely. shits gonna break and u will pay for it. ive done each one individually and it all works except for the PP one since its new.

if u wanna risk it, its always YMMV and a huge headache to resolve since everyone will be pointing at each other. when u operate in silos, there is no other to blame.

Problem is, I don’t have an actual PayPal CC. I have a virtual one created when I linked Paypal to Samsung Pay. My only real chance for this promo is to link Citi to Paypal, make it primary, then use Samsung Pay with Paypal selected, for the 3 transactions of $30+
