Citi Dividend Q3 2021 Categories: Gas Stations, Home Improvement Stores

Citi released the quarterly categories for their 5% Dividend card for Q3 2021:

  • Gas Stations
  • Home Improvement Stores

Sign up begins on June 15th.

Citi Dividend works differently than most other 5% cards in that you can max out the full $300 cashback for the entire year whenever you’d like, it doesn’t have to be $75 each quarter. A lot of people might want to max out the full year of cashback in the current Q2 categories of Supermarkets and Drugstores.

I notice a trend here:
Q3 Citi Dividend duplicates previous quarter’s Chase Freedom cats
Q2 Citi Dividend duplicates+ previous quarter’s Discover cats
Q1 Citi Dividend mostly duplicates previous quarter’s Discover cats

I wonder if they’re always going to be duplicating the previous categories from the competition.

Whatever the case, I’ve got to say this card is spending a lot more time in my wallet the past year or so, as the categories have actually been useful.

I converted another Citi card to Dividend about 10 years ago, and for most of that decade, it’s sat in my sock drawer. Every quarter, the categories have been either entirely useless to me (Fitness Centers? Feh. Amazon? I have the Prime card for 5%. Airlines? I’m using up miles instead. Car Rentals? I’d rather have primary insurance coverage), or the categories have completely overlapped with the current quarter for either Freedom or Discover, both of which give me redemption options that make my potential net reward 5%+. So why would I use Dividend?

But lately they’ve been selecting useful categories that don’t overlap with Freedom or Discover. That’s a win for me.

Oh yeah, one other thing. Dividend just loves the Department Store category, especially Q4. Does anyone else make much use of that, even if it didn’t overlap with Freedom or Discover (which it usually does)? Here’s an anecdote that to me sums up the usefulness of department stores. A couple years back, at Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, someone smashed a car through a mall anchor store entrance, during the middle of prime shopping time, and continued through the center of the store at a decent clip, through the doors into the main part of the mall before the car stopped. Not a single person was injured. The anchor store? Sears. ’nuff said.

Maybe they were reenacting Blues Brothers. Same state, very different city.

Is it possible to PC to this card?

It never hurts to ask; however, people have been reporting for about 2 years now that Citi will not allow PC to Dividend any longer. They keep trying to get me to PC mine to DC…no thanks!

At least it doesn’t match up with Freedom 5%, not the worst.
