The Fine Print

  • Primary signer on the new checking account may not be or have been a primary or secondary signer on any personal checking account within the previous six months
  • Offer only available to the person who receives this email (you can review the e-mail by entering your details on the site)
  • Qualified debit card payments and purchases include signature and PIN based debit transactions through a third party web site and in person directly at a merchant. Online Bill Payments and ATM transactions do not qualify
  • Bonus will be deposited to your qualifying checking account within 145 days of opening your new checking account and will be labeled as “Balance Builder Bonus.”
  • One bonus per customer
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

Monthly fee of $9.99 is waived if you have a deposit of any amount to the checking account that month. We couldn’t locate their fee schedule so I am unsure if there is any early account termination fee or not.

Our Verdict

This is a pretty good bonus considering there is no hard pull, you can fund $1,000 with a credit card and there is no direct deposit requirement. I would complete this bonus if I lived within the target area, but unfortunately I do not. I’ve added it to our list of the best bank bonuses and also included it in our complete list of checking bonuses.

Few Data points:

This is churnable. I have done this 3 times in last three years. Although, my bonus was $200.

I am not sure if USPS still carries the coupon, but they have it for $200 bonus.

Bonus, does take full 120 days to post or more in some cases. At least that’s my take.

This is easy bonus and as I said you could do it once a year.

Primary signer on the new checking account may not be or have been a primary or secondary signer on **any personal checking account** within the previous six months

Sounds like you can’t do this if you got a new bank account in the past 6 months.

HORACE

@JAY — Do you mean that you were able to get a $200 bonus each of the 3 years that you have done this? Second, how does one get a coupon from the USPS — I assume you are referring to US Postal Service?? Third, the restriction of not having opened an account for at least 6 months I assumes pertains to a Citizen’s Bank account and not any old checking account??

Many thanks!

Horace

Yes. $200 per year. Once I get the bonus, I wait about 2 more months to close which will be little over 6 months from the date I opened the account.

You can obtain coupon from USPS move guide at post office or do address change online. The coupon comes in the email if you do COA online.

you shouldn’t have had account with them in last six months to qualify for the offer for this bonus.

HORACE

@JAY — Man, that was quick! Thanks for the reply and answers! I am a little unclear of some of the acronyms — what is COA? Also, just to be clear, you interpret their restrictions for the bonus as only applying to Citizen’s Bank accounts and not any accounts from other banks, right?

Following up on that last question, since you seem to be an experienced at this, had you opened up another bank’s account within the above time limitation and still received the bonus from Citizen’s Bank (in your case — $200)??

Thanks,

Horace

COA = change of address

Yes, you can open accounts at any other institution while applying for this account. Its totally unrelated.

HORACE

Thanks, I think!

Sorry if it seems a bit pedantic, but I understand one can open other accounts at other banks, but my question is this:

If I have opened other accounts at other banks within the past 6 months am I eligible for the bonus?

A strict reading of their terms indicates that I will not get the bonus. A more liberal reading of their terms — with them meaning “other accounts” as other Citizen’s accounts and not any and all other banks’ account — would mean yes.

I am specifically asking whether you — or anyone else who would care to chime in — whether they had opened a savings/checking account with another bank and then opened the subject promotion account above within 6 months and they still received the bonus from Citizen’s Bank?

Opening the Citizen Bank account and then opening another bank account does not answer the question.

Did someone open another bank account and then open the Citizen promotional account within 6 months of the earlier bank account opening and STILL receive the Citizen bonus?

Thanks!

I changed my address via USPS location&website, and I received a bunch of ads&coupons together in the mail from local malls and retailers. However,I never found any bank promotion offers including citizen banks’ in the mail due to the change of address.BTW,I live in NY and I don’t know whether other states will have bank offer in the mail.

Could be YMMV now I guess. I opened my account in PA. Maybe geographically targeted? My most recent opening date was in March 2015.

In that case this offer isn’t bad either. it just takes long to get the bonus.

@Jay

I recently did the $200 offer with them. I used a coupon I found on ebay. Do they generally accept those even though it was send to someone else? Also how long after does the bonus post after you meet the requirements?

One last one, you said you closed after 6 months. Is that because of a termination fee or something else? How did you close the account? Through SM or calling?

Thank you again for answering!

HORACE

@Steve — My question as well!

DOC — I opened the US Bank Power Up checking account recently. Am I precluded from this offer for at least 6 months from the day I opened that account, or does the limitation on the bonus only pertain to having opened a Citizen’s account?

Inquiring minds wishing to know…………………….

I live in Maryland but close to the Delaware border, there is a branch about half an hour from me. Would I be able to open an account in the branch and get the bonus or do I have to be a Resident?

you are reading too much into this. They only care about accts at THEIR own bank. I have done many bank bonuses and never a problem. Hope this helps.

HORACE

Thank you Barry, that is good to know/hear!

Andrew

Applied and used Citi card to fund (CA limit set to $0). Will follow up if it works or not.

HORACE
HORACE

Good to know.

You should have no problem with Citi. I used the Citi HHonors Reserve with a CA @ $0 to fund both the Savings and Checking portion of the US Bank Power Up and START promotions with no problems, whatsoever — thanks all to DOC!!!

Thanks to Jay, picked up the $200 coupon from usps (MA), will try it sometime this week using cc as opening funds!

Mark O

Does it have a code to do it online since Doc said you can not load in branch with a credit card.

Ian
Ian

Its a 13 character unique code that can be used online. Used it online and funded account with $1000 credit card. Amount hasn’t been deducted yet though.

Glad you found it.

By the way, DOC, can the additional deposit “after the opening deposit” in lieu of the 5 debit transaction also be from a credit card, or must it come from any other source?

CJ
CJ

So could the the monthly deposit to avoid the monthly fee be literally $0.01?

jay
jay

Yes. Its considered a deposit, but would you really deposit a penny?

Steve
Steve

Absolutely. Why would I deposit more than that if I don’t plan on actually using the account?

If I’m setting up an automatic ACH transfer it doesn’t matter what number I put in.

folks like Steve and CJ above are the one’s who ruin these offers for other folks by scamming the bank. I am a vet of MS and bank bonuses. I did this offer last year (for 150.00) and still use account by xferring $ from another bank 1x per month. I pay my other CC bills with it, so I keep these accts. I actually use about 8 CA to [pay MS bills. All the accts I have have received large bonus when opened. Don’t have time to play with 1 cent deposits.

Hi Barry,

I like this bank so might use them for regular msing. They seem reasonable with the fees. I have a quick question for you:

I recently did the $200 offer with them. I used a coupon I found on ebay. Do they generally accept those even though it was send to someone else? Also how long after does the bonus post after you meet the requirements?

Is that because of a termination fee or something else? How did you close the account? Through SM or calling?

Thank you again for answering!

The secret to success in all these bonuses is triggering the system by fulfilling the requirements without having humans hey involved. For that, a penny is fine.

NoonRadar

Can someone confirm that it was only a soft pull in the last 6 months or so (assuming you didn’t opt in for overdraft)?

Rick
Rick

No hard pull as long as you don’t do overdraft protection

BTW, loved your redbird guides. Thanks again! Also quick question for redbird, is it possible to use an ATM at Target to pick up the cash in the redbird?

NoonRadar

Thanks.

Yes, you can withdraw from the ATM at Target, though I personally try to unload mostly by billpay, paying the bills of the credit cards with which I purchased the gift cards loaded to Redbird.

Phong @ FinancialBasis.com

Would deposits from paypal waive the fees? Or do I actually have to go to a bank/atm to deposit money?

FYI – As you go through the application, there is a section for “Account Terms and Conditions and Disclosures”. Once you click through, you will see that the account closing fee is $0.

Has anyone gotten the bonus on this yet? It has been a while and I have not seen anything yet and was just wondering what kind of time frame Citizens usually works with. I know most banks have been within a week or two but this has been a while longer.
