$5000 Threshold
In the terms of many BofA cards, including Alaska, Travel Rewards and Cash Rewards, the terms mention that based on the credit line you receive you’ll get either the Signature version of the card or the Platinum version. (With regards to some of the cards, there’s also a third, lower version called the Classic version.) With a $5000 or more credit line, you get the Signature and receive Visa Signature benefits and with credit lines of under $5000 you’ll receive the Platinum version which doesn’t have all the same benefits.
With regards to the Alaska Airlines cards, BofA is clear that the 25,000 points signup bonus is only for those approved at a $5000 credit line or more. Those approved for lower credit lines will receive the Platinum or Classic versions of the card and will get a 5000 or 3000 point bonus respectively.
A few days ago, I wrote about my BofA credit card applications. At the time, I was under the impression that all BofA cards need the $5000 credit line in order to be eligible for the signup bonus.
This is incorrect. We clarified with BofA that the signup bonus for the Travel Rewards card is not dependent on a $5000 credit line.
Only the Alaska card mentions the $5000 qualifier in the terms. While other cards do mention the fact that lower credit limits will not get the Visa Signature card and benefits, this will not impact eligibility for the signup bonus. No other card, aside from Alaska, mentions the need for a $5000 credit limit as a prerequisite to being eligible for the signup bonus.
Combine Inquiries
Another point worth mentioning: A reader pointed out that it seems like there will be a new BofA Amtrak card being released on September 12, 2015. If you have interest in that card, you may consider holding off on the 20,000 point Travel Rewards bonus with the hopes that you’ll be able to apply for both the Travel Rewards and Amtrak cards at the same time and combine the credit inquiries.
This is my first application with BOA, got instantly denied, which i thought was odd since my new scores from Discover and Amex just came out and they were in excellent category. Called recon line and the agent said it is because of lack of credit history and relationship with BOA. He was able to recon it but it went to pending because an executive has to review it.
2 hours later he called and told me i was approved for $5k.
Now i am not sure if I should stack the better balance rewards card with this card to get combined hard inquiry… Any ideas here?
Mine were combined.
1 of our 8 BoA Alaska, business and personal came back as regular visa and didn’t qualify for the 25k. I cancelled it.
Have not called in yet, but Travel Rewards denied for “too many inquires.”
How can that be 😉
I can tell you that the B of A biz Alaska cards that my wife and I received 3 months ago, and got 25K miles for each, is not a Visa Sig. Just a Visa. I don’t know the credit limits of either, I just know they wre fully bonused. However, it’s clear from the badging of the card in the lower right that it’s just a Visa whereas the 3 each we got of the personal Alaska cards were all Visa Sigs as badged. Each came with a $19K credit limit. We called immediately to push the credit limit down to $5K in order to not push up against a credit number that B of A was uncomfortable with. She’s now up over 150K miles and I’m just under. I’ll need to get one more to get over the magic number although I’ve heard it’s harder to get the card now. Neither of us have gotten one since mid-June. Any thoughts on how long to wait?
I believe that the Alaska business card does not have the $5000 language. If, like me, you are concerned that you might get the lower version of the card, it makes sense to apply for the business version instead.
Interesting, it didn’t occur to me to check that out.
FYI if you apply for two TR cards BofA’s computers will believe the second application is a duplicate and ignore it (even placed several hours apart). I had luck calling the recon line to tell them I actually wanted both.
Right, it always seems to require a call-in now.
What reason did you give them for the second card? Were you successful?
I had a very helpful CSR so I’m not sure it would’ve mattered, but I told her the truth. That I travel frequently for work and wanted a way to keep my work-related receipts separate for easier reimbursement. I thought about applying for a third TR like DoC mentioned in the first article, but didn’t have a good reason other than greed. So I applied for a BBR and was auto-approved. 😀
