CVS Leaving The Five Back Program?

There is a Visa gift card called the Five Back Visa gift card issued by Blackhawk. This card earns 5% back at select merchants. Reader Andrew S was told that CVS will no longer be a participating merchant as of  today when they went into Simon Mall to make a purchase. Flyertalk user lumangoy also received the same information but with a January 20th end date, as did Project End Point.

CVS is still listed as a participating merchant on the Five Back website, but three separate reports indicate that it’s either likely that CVS are leaving the program or representatives  at Simon Mall have been misinformed.

Are these indeed 3 separate reports or is it just an echo chamber from the Flyertalk original post?

The reason I’m asking is that Jan 20th end date still gives me time to make another run. Or two.

There are more than 3 DPs now. There is uncertainty over whether cards between now and the 20th will get credit.

I just received same info directly from mall rep. It was sent out via email today from Corp.

Same thing happened to me at Simon mall today.

Meh. I made a test $100 VGC purchase at CVS using a five back card in late December. 12 days later, and still no 5% back. Website said to call their number if the 5% doesn’t come. Called their number… and absolutely no option for speaking to someone about it. I saw on FT someone had to choose “dispute a charge” to speak to someone. In the end, just too much hassle.

Lol. You gave quite an effort.

Sarcasm, yeah? He literally gave no effort. The process is well documented on FT.

Yea, I’ve easily gotten 4 digits of cash from just the 5% bonuses not counting credit card points/cashback, portals, and the crazy GCM discount. I wouldn’t be surprised if the heavy hitters that started early are approaching 5 digits of extra cash.

MS isn’t for lazy people

Steve

Yeah, I’m lazy because I don’t want to log in every day checking all my five back cards to see if they’ve finally disbursed and then call for every card to harass them over five bucks. And then wait to see if they followed through. That’s the hassle I’m referring to.

And thanks for importing the usual douchery from FT to here!

i find w/ CVS, you have to run the 5B card as “credit” not “Debit”. then you automatically get the 5%. if you use Debit, you have to call in and harass them

? Never once used credit and all posted

OK. Just called my Simon Mall. They read me the memo. CVS will pull out 1/20/17. Confirmed.

This was just too good to last

i guess the real question now is whether buying FBs from now til 1/20 will get credited

CVS is hurting bad.
They are closing 100s of stores.
They are penny pinching everywhere to remain profitable.
Its my prediction that by 2018 you wont see CVS around anymore.

Dave
Dave

Carlos, i’ll give you 1000 to 1 odds that I will see a CVS in the year 2018. The most likely scenarios I don’t see one is if I am dead or kidnapped and locked in a bunker.

Carlos
Carlos

We will see.
CVS got to big to fast.
Yes they are closing there unprofitable stores but this is how it all begins.

DSP
DSP

You should report them to the SEC then. Their latest 10K filing said they made 3.6 billion in net profit in the first 9 months of 2016! How could they lie to shareholders like that?

Carlos
Carlos

Ya all this and they are closing 100s of stores for no reason im sure.

There’s been a STRONG push of misinformation about MSing the Five Back cards on many forums since they came out so take this announcement with a grain of salt would be my advice. The Five Back to CVS to MO shuffle has been extremely profitable for many MSers and I’m guessing that many bloggers didn’t give it the attention it deserved as they were likely enjoying it as well.

That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out to be true as I’ve felt that this was a profit loss for CVS all along and assumed that more sooner than later it would end. 2016 had a lot of bad changes for the MSing world, but the Five Backs coming out in the last quarter definitely helps to ease the sting of the earlier part of the year.

Purposeful misinformation is common on FlyerTalk, but that’s not what’s going on here. If you have doubts, pick up your phone and call your Simon Mall.

how was the trick on MS on these cards? Purchase VGC at CVS and then? ho to kill the VGC?

JASON
JASON

Oh, because we can use CC or prepaid card to buy gift card at CVS right?

Mist Soalar

I never tried to use CC to buy VGC at CVS, can we do it??

Constantine

I tried it once and they asked for my ID and say you cant buy a VGC with a VGC.

Tim

They may have a gift card limit of $500 per transaction and they ask to scan your ID. At least at my stores anyway….which is why I avoid CVS now days.

JASON
JASON

$2000 per day for gift card purchases, I tried PPMC and vanilla load before and yes they accepted CC. But this really depends on the store and even the cashier. Some cashier @ CVS even rejected to try and say a lot of instructions/regulations in front of me. They do scan my ID, that being said, if you go to CVS store A to purchase $1500 already and you cannot purchase more than $500 in a different store B in one day. But I never max out daily limit anyway

juand david
juand david

I have purchase VGC with CC, yes they scan ID but I keep it to low 500 transactions from time to time. The thing is how to liquidate those 500 VGC?

Don’t know where to post this, so I searched Fiveback and found this article.

I believe Staples is no longer a member of the Fiveback companies.
Used a couple of these cards in store last week, checked account balances a couple days later and no 5% bump. Checked the website at fiveback, I no longer see Staples listed.

Sorry if this has already been covered elsewhere on DoC

Yes, I believe that’s correct as of the past few weeks or so
