Delta Devalues Partner Awards, Again

Last October Delta devalued partner awards by as much as 40% during a global pandemic without any notice. Unfortunately Delta has now devalued partner awards again. Delta doesn’t publish an award chart any longer meaning they can make these changes without any notice or real oversight.

  • Business class flights between the US & Europe on partners now start at 120,000 miles.
    • Before October these awards were pricing at 75,000-86,000 miles
    • After October these awards were pricing at 95,000 miles
  • Business class flights between the US & North/India Asia on partners now start at 120,000 miles (previously 102,500 miles)
  • Business class flights between the US & South East Asia on partners now start at 165,000 miles (previously  147,500 miles)

Seems like a ridiculous time to raise award prices again given the current circumstances and the fact that Delta just increased prices a few months ago. This is one of the issues with the removal of award charts and no matter how much these loyalty programs lie and state that nothing will change, big devaluations always follow.

As long as they just devalue Business/First, I am OK. Never fly in Business or First class.

They DID devalue Economy the previous time around (last October). Read that article that’s linked in the first sentence of the post above.

So were you OK with that too? ??

Keep in mind, they’re doing this devaluation in stages, so not each devaluation stage will affect everyone, but the combination of them IS likely to affect everyone.

How this “seems” is more about perspective.

From our end, the people who have loads of points from sign-up bonuses and intend to use them for maximum value, yes, this is ridiculous-ly bad for us.

From the perspective of this for-profit corporation that is currently bleeding capital as it has to maintain planes, pay salaries and benefits while not bringing in much revenue, there’s never a better time to reduce liabilities.

Though, in hindsight, maybe stock buybacks were NOT such a great idea, you know, like in case there’s a global pandemic that kills travel for about 1-2 years.. may need that liquidity after-all, eh?

Also, customers don’t have memories, right? Would suck to upset them with constant devaluations and them go to competitors.. unless all those competitors do the same thing, then who cares! Yay!

William, should this card be on your “Not on my list” card?
It’s only gonna change when Amex realizes they are being played for a chump.

You should clarify that these are ONE-WAY prices. It explains that at the linked OMaaT site, but not in your post above.

When Amex began offering 100k & 125k bonuses on the Platinum card in November and 60k bonus on the Gold card, it seemed too good to be true. The new offers on the Platinum and Gold cards are pretty much the same as the 60k offer originally for the Platinum and 35k for the Gold card. Similar to cash, it seems there’s inflation with points.
