Delta Launches SkyMiles Select – $59 For Group 1 Boarding, 8 Drink Vouchers & Bag Tag

Delta has launched a new program called ‘SkyMiles Select‘ you pay $59 annually and you get the following benefits:

  • Main cabin 1 boarding
  • 8 Drink vouchers that can be redeemed in flight
  • SkyMiles select bag tag

I guess be worth it for people that buy drinks on Delta flights as it works out to be $7.375 per drink, still not a great deal though. For the majority of people this is a waste of time and will likely just annoy elites with more people having access to early boarding.

Keep in mind a Delta credit card gives you the same boarding zone and when you calculate the price of 8 drinks after 20% in flight discount.. it’s cheaper to buy 8 drinks on a Delta Amex. This isn’t worth it if you have any Delta card. One drink is $7.20 on a Delta card

Amex has claimed to me multiple times that Main 1 boarding doesnt apply to basic economy tickets purchased with a delta/amex cobranded cc, even though theres literally no exclusions listed in the terms and thats the #1 scenario that anyone would be interested in the Main 1 bump for. Sometimes I get Main 1 on those tickets, sometimes I dont.

When I said something to Amex about the terms not excluding basic economy, and questioning why I wasnt getting the benefits I paid for, they literally just said “I’m sorry you feel that way” I wouldnt count on any Amex branded card to get you zone 1.

I’ve always had Main 1 cabin boarding for basic economy flights with my Delta Gold I never had a time where I didn’t get it that’s interesting that you don’t get that all the time. It might be a YMMV thing. I know for sure you aren’t able to pick your seat with basic economy.

i have Amex Delta Plat, which gets you free bags, at least. Wheni booked/took a Delta trip this year, it did not automatically waive my baggage fees, even tho my CC was linked to my Delta Profile and whatnot.

So, i had to check my bag with an agent (which was fine, i had time to burn), and tell them “I have this CC, my bag fees should be waived” and they waived them for me.

I no longer trust that such “built-in” benefits will work – like getting assigned a Boarding Class, etc – unless the card automatically gives me some sort of Medallion Status (which none of them do)

I almost always fly basic economy and get main 1 without exception

and/or it’s cheaper to use a credit card with an airline fee rebate (now that you can’t use GC’s to burn that). between Penfed Pathfinder, Amex Gold, and possibly Amex Delta card(s) i’m keeping in 2019, i’ll have plenty of airline credits to use

Pretty weak offering. Probably not even worth seeing if it will trigger the Amex incidental credit.

Curious to see if this would work for the AMEX incidentals for the gold card. Then this could be worth it, other than that though better off just getting the co-branded AMEX Gold.

I don’t fly Delta much (so no status and no credit cards with them), and if it’ll reimburse with the Amex Platinum credit, would that make it worth it?

the Amex Plat will also get you into Delta Lounges (as well as other lounges). No real reason to get a Delta card if you’re holding an Amex Plat

“Stand out: Showcase your membership wherever you go with a limited edition bag tag!”
That’s sure the line that sold me! Hope the bag tag is made of titanium!!!
Won’t that impress the elites in the Delta Lounge?

Wait a few weeks and you will be able to buy one on ebay for pennies on the dollar.

or just mock one up

$59 for a bag tag to show off that I’m a sucker!

“will likely just annoy elites with more people having access to early boarding”
I’ll take two.

Joking aside, do you think will this count towards amex’s incidental credit? I still haven’t used mines up for the year.

BigAmexPlatGuy

Just spoke with Amex Chat online and looks like this won’t qualify for the incidental credit

Just called AMEX Plat customer service, the CSR basically said it’s going to depend on how it codes. I’m just curious if they would honor it by calling in after the fact and requesting a credit. I will be flying 2 RT in delta economy in early 2019. Would be nice to get the 8 drink tickets up front.

If for some reason you can’t get the credit card and don’t have status, this might be worth it to you. If you have either of those things, this is worthless, so I guess Delta said there are enough of those people out there. It doesn’t cost them anything to offer this.

Keith

It sure does cost them. R&D and man hours. People could have been paid for dong something else.

All joking aside, I actually view this as a boarding play more than anything. LOL about the bag tag. I know when I fly and I am buying tickets for my family I almost always fly Delta if possible. I also almost always buy the basic economy ticket which is the very last to board. Granted Main Priority 1 isn’t anything crazy, it is still better than the very last Basic Economy. Could be the difference in having to check my bag at the gate vs. putting it in the overhead. For $60, I will take it.

Why not just get the card then? Free checked bags. Who cares about the drinks? If you drink you’ll get a solid price by using the Delta card anyway. To me this is silly and stupid. for 40 more bucks you can have the card and much better perks and still the Group 1.

I can share that what I am hearing in many private discussions with flight attendants is that they absolutely do not like moves like this. Any emphasis on increased consumption of alcohol is not only frowned upon but seen as potentially compromising passenger safety. Airlines need to offer food items as their incentive, not judgment impairment.

When they have a program (That does not require an annual fee credit card) that discounts or completely eliminates baggage fees, I’m in!

Any word if this triggers Amex airline credit on Gold/Platinum cards? I still have $100 fee credit on my Gold card now that gift cards don’t work anymore… May as well spend it on something.

I’ve got just about 60 bucks left. I’m gonna try it, but won’t be for 4 weeks when my delta flight comes up.

Add 1 lounge pass and we are talking.

Forgive my ignorance as I don’t fly much…what is the draw to priority boarding? Why would someone rather spend more time in an airline seat and less time in the lobby? I usually try to be the very last person to board. I also only ever carry on a backpack so I’m not worried about having to check it.

People like to be the first to do anything which means that they are obsessed with being the first one on the plane and the first one off the plane. Makes no sense to me. I too always try to board last and even though I always have a roller suitcase there has only been one time that I couldn’t find space for it due to boarding at the end.

I usually fly for work as a photographer. Often both my carry ons have expensive camera equipment/lithium batteries that I would not like tucked under the plane. It’s imperative for me to have access to my bags.

channelz28

This makes sense. The last trip I took involved 4 flights and I think every one filled up to the point that they made you check a hard suitcase.
