Delta Launches SkyMiles Select – $59 For Group 1 Boarding, 8 Drink Vouchers & Bag Tag

Delta has launched a new program called ‘SkyMiles Select‘ you pay $59 annually and you get the following benefits:

  • Main cabin 1 boarding
  • 8 Drink vouchers that can be redeemed in flight
  • SkyMiles select bag tag

I guess be worth it for people that buy drinks on Delta flights as it works out to be $7.375 per drink, still not a great deal though. For the majority of people this is a waste of time and will likely just annoy elites with more people having access to early boarding.

Forgive my ignorance as I don’t fly much…what is the draw to priority boarding? Why would someone rather spend more time in an airline seat and less time in the lobby? I usually try to be the very last person to board. I also only ever carry on a backpack so I’m not worried about having to check it.

People like to be the first to do anything which means that they are obsessed with being the first one on the plane and the first one off the plane. Makes no sense to me. I too always try to board last and even though I always have a roller suitcase there has only been one time that I couldn’t find space for it due to boarding at the end.

I usually fly for work as a photographer. Often both my carry ons have expensive camera equipment/lithium batteries that I would not like tucked under the plane. It’s imperative for me to have access to my bags.

This makes sense. The last trip I took involved 4 flights and I think every one filled up to the point that they made you check a hard suitcase.

Add 1 lounge pass and we are talking.

Any word if this triggers Amex airline credit on Gold/Platinum cards? I still have $100 fee credit on my Gold card now that gift cards don’t work anymore… May as well spend it on something.

I’ve got just about 60 bucks left. I’m gonna try it, but won’t be for 4 weeks when my delta flight comes up.

When they have a program (That does not require an annual fee credit card) that discounts or completely eliminates baggage fees, I’m in!

I can share that what I am hearing in many private discussions with flight attendants is that they absolutely do not like moves like this. Any emphasis on increased consumption of alcohol is not only frowned upon but seen as potentially compromising passenger safety. Airlines need to offer food items as their incentive, not judgment impairment.

All joking aside, I actually view this as a boarding play more than anything. LOL about the bag tag. I know when I fly and I am buying tickets for my family I almost always fly Delta if possible. I also almost always buy the basic economy ticket which is the very last to board. Granted Main Priority 1 isn’t anything crazy, it is still better than the very last Basic Economy. Could be the difference in having to check my bag at the gate vs. putting it in the overhead. For $60, I will take it.

Why not just get the card then? Free checked bags. Who cares about the drinks? If you drink you’ll get a solid price by using the Delta card anyway. To me this is silly and stupid. for 40 more bucks you can have the card and much better perks and still the Group 1.

If for some reason you can’t get the credit card and don’t have status, this might be worth it to you. If you have either of those things, this is worthless, so I guess Delta said there are enough of those people out there. It doesn’t cost them anything to offer this.

It sure does cost them. R&D and man hours. People could have been paid for dong something else.

Just spoke with Amex Chat online and looks like this won’t qualify for the incidental credit

Just called AMEX Plat customer service, the CSR basically said it’s going to depend on how it codes. I’m just curious if they would honor it by calling in after the fact and requesting a credit. I will be flying 2 RT in delta economy in early 2019. Would be nice to get the 8 drink tickets up front.

“will likely just annoy elites with more people having access to early boarding”
I’ll take two.

Joking aside, do you think will this count towards amex’s incidental credit? I still haven’t used mines up for the year.

“Stand out: Showcase your membership wherever you go with a limited edition bag tag!”
That’s sure the line that sold me! Hope the bag tag is made of titanium!!!
Won’t that impress the elites in the Delta Lounge?
