Update 5/9/25: This will be available again on 5/14 over the phone and 5/28 through the website. Hat tip to reddit
Discover offers two primary credit cards: Discover it & Discover it Miles (and variations such as Discover it Secured). It has been possible to do a product change from the regular Discover it card to the Discover it Miles card since February of this year, that isn’t particularly useful though as after the first year the Discover it Miles card isn’t that attractive (1.5% on all purchases, doubled at the end of the first year).
It’s now possible to do a product change from the Discover it Miles card to the regular Discover it card that earns 5% in rotating categories. This is much more attractive as you earn 5% cash back on categories that change quarterly (with a spending cap of $1,500). This means you can get the Discover it Miles to earn 3% the first year and then product change it to the Discover it card to get 5% cash back thereafter in those rotating categories.
It’s not possible to do a product change until you’re no longer enrolled in the Discover Cashback Match program (meaning you need to wait one year to complete the product change). You can view a full list of product change/downgrade options & rules for each card issuer by clicking here. It’s also worth remembering that you’re limited to a total of two Discover credit cards and you need to have your first card for twelve months before you’re eligible for a second card.

Some people reported success, although seems like it’s down now?
Looks like this is finally live via the website. Some users on Reddit have reported success switching their card type.
This is still not working according to the latest posts, even though it’s much more than a month since the promised updated start date of 6/14 for agents, and also more than a month since 6/16 when you said the dates may have changed Well, it seems like if the dates have changed, it’s who knows how far into the future.
So I wonder if the title of this post should be changed from “now allowing” to something like “now planning to allow”, or prefixed with “[Rumor]”, or some other terminology which doesn’t imply that it actually works right now?
Good suggestion, added.
It’s now 3 full weeks since the last post below. Has anyone retried the product change recently?
I tried a couple days ago by phone. Still no dice.
Anyone have any luck with this yet?
Chatted with rep today. She has not heard of anything regarding allowing product changes.
But today was the day it was supposed to possibly start working on the website, according to the dates above.
So did you try making the product change on the website?
I did not see any option to product change on the website portal.
No option today online. Get your act together Discover! Oh and don’t shut me down.
Are you sure the post on Reddit is really from Discover? It’s easy for someone to create the look of a discover logo.
The reason I’m asking is because the dates posted on that reddit page seem to be incorrect.
That reddit page said agents would be able to do it starting on 5/14, but multiple comments below say that agents still can’t do it, and one comment says an agent said it’ll be a couple weeks.
So the reddit post you linked may have gotten the dates mixed up.
The reddit post isn’t from Discover, it’s just a chat agent. It’s possible the dates have changed
Anyone actually succeed yet. I called several times yesterday with no luck. Customer service reps acting like they have no idea what you are talking about…
just called discover and supervisor said they’re getting training on this and to check back in 2 weeks
