Our Verdict
Points can be coverted to airline miles at a 1:1 or better transfer rate, but you need a minimum of 2,500 points to do so. Award nights start at 1,000 points per night. You can also redeem points for food and beverage, with 10 points = $1USD. This is by far the best value and 250 points will be equal to $25USD. I’m not that familiar with the program, does anybody know if you have to be staying at a property to redeem for food and beverage (Update: According to reader Ben you don’t need to be staying)? From what I’ve been able to find out, the standard offer is 100 points for downloading the app. Points don’t post instantly, allow 2-4 weeks for them to post.

I got my 250 points took about two weeks
Points will expire after about 3 years. You can figure out exactly when if you can decipher this:
GC Award Points will expire on an annual basis up to three calendar years (1 January to 31 December) after the end of the membership calendar year of accrual.

In my experience, I was able to use points for dining even though I wasn’t a guest. I’ve done this multiple times, however only at one Shangri La property.

What can you do with the points once they hit your account? Do you need a minimum to take them out ?
In my experience you don’t need a minimum to use for dining. However I’ve never spent less than $10, so maybe that’s the minimum. Also you don’t seem to need to spend in increments of $10, they would just deduct points based on my total bill.
