eBay Gift Cards Can No Longer be Used to Buy eBay Gift Cards [‘Rolling’]

eBay is now enforcing the terms and not allowing an eBay gift card to be used to buy an eBay gift card.

Ebay has long had a rule in their terms that you can’t use an eBay gift card to buy an eBay gift card – even before all the recent changes. But it was never enforced; the system always allowed us to pay for an eBay gift card with an eBay gift card. This laxity led to the Slickdeals phenomenon called “rolling” eBay gift cards.

“Rolling”: Ebay often offers a sale on their gift cards, e.g. $100 eBay gift card for $95. Many people bought the gift card on sale, then used that $100 card to buy the next eBay gift card sale, and that one to buy the next, etc.

EBay is now enforcing the terms and not allowing eBay gift cards to be used to buy eBay gift cards, both e-gift cards and physical gift cards. The system still does allow eBay Bucks to buy eBay gift cards, however.

What I like about this new change is that it indicates that we’re safe – for now – to continue using eBay gift cards to buy third-party gift cards on eBay. Apparently, they are fine with that.

Help!!! My wife and I were given Ebay gc(s) as a gift. We have tried unsuccessfully to purchase Carnival Cruise Line Gift Cards from Ebay for a trip we are taking later this year….. Ebay says no-go……. We are are in a near panic as the cards total a large (for us) amount of cash……

No error, but the pay button is grayed out…. When I called Ebay (boy that was fun to find the right person and number), I was told that Ebay does not allow the purchase of gc(s) with Ebay gift cards….end of story… She only offered the suggestion that we could buy merchandise from Ebay with our cards. Thanks for the prompt response!

Further information… The checkout cart does allow us to input the 15 digit number on the gc(s) and it does credit that amount to the total purchase….but as stated above, the pay button is grayed out… and the process is stopped……

Just to update: I tried again and it finally worked so I guess you just have to keep trying.

A little off topic but I am trying to use my ebay bucks on a 3rd party gift card purchase and I keep getting “Oops, we’re having technical issues. Please try your code again.” Any ideas why?

I am also having the same problem. Tried paying with Ebay bucks and/or Ebay gift cards this morning for an hour, and it’s telling me the same thing “Oops, we’re having technical issues”

Eventually after few tries it takes the Ebay Bucks or Ebay gift card, but then it says “Paypal is having issues and you can’t complete the transaction.

With interest rates so low they make very little on the float, so they want you to use GC’s on something that generates revenue for them. Rolling makes them no money and even generates a small loss.

Buying thrid-party GC’s with eBay GC’s generates listing and final value fees, so logically they won’t stop that use.

This is bad. I didn’t like the strategy of buying a discounted eBay gc using another eBay gc and I didn’t do it habitually, but from time to time it was convenient. I don’t believe they’re gonna stop accepting eBay gcs for 3rd party gcs though, especially now that Amazon started allowing that.

Do you mind sharing which portal now that it’s dead?

You used to be able to earn portal bonuses on ebay gift cards through a lot of them (topcashback etc) but they don’t pay for it anymore.

Actually TCB was paying out on Ebay gc as recently as last month. I never abused it though and only bought it when there was some kind of deal (ie 5% off). I’m guessing that’s the portal P was referring to.

I think ebay just send out a notice saying they won’t pay portals for ebay GC within the last month or so.
