Our Verdict

They are offering smaller bonuses with other airline portals, but Southwest is by far the best at 1,000 points (others are 450 miles and under). They offered the same deal last year as well, any questions you have may have been asked and answered there so have a read through the comments before asking similar questions here.

FYI, For my state of Kentucky return, Turbo Tax incorrectly estimated the Family size tax credit to the tune of several hundred dollars. (Bassically a credit for lower incomes.) Essentially H&R block says I get $400 more back.

I’m guessing this is somewhat rare, but can still happen apparantly (I’ve gone and read the tax form. While the form is confucing I’m 90% sure HR block is the correct one.

If you make 66k or less you can file NY state income tax online for free with Turbo Tax. I did this last year for an elderly relative in NYC. https://www.tax.ny.gov/pit/efile/

Does anyone know / have datapoint that if I choose to file by mail in the end, and just toss away the forms it produces, will I get bonus points?

Pretty sure you need to actually file using it. You could file free, leaving much things out and amend your return using paper after (since TT charges for even things like an HSA, I believe). However, that might not be worth 1k miles…

I quite like doing my taxes by hand. Good for the soul, the mind’s arithmetic, and sharpening of the ability to read T&Cs 🙂

I use turbotax only to verify calculations of other free tools and then file either with them or by mail, whichever is free and support forms and my circumstances

This is the best way to use TT. Verify TT results with other providers and file taxes using the cheaper option.
