Our Verdict

I believe these are all for physical gift cards. Exxon and Sheetz sell gas which can always be interesting at 5% off, and 5% off a grocery store like Publix is interesting too. Just keep in mind Gas/Grocery is a regularly bonused credit card category, and you’ll be losing the category multiplier by buying a gift card so it’s not necessarily a great deal for everyone, but for the right person this can be interesting.

The other gift cards discounts are interesting as well. I’m not seeing limits on these deals or an expiration (it says 2037).

Go through a shopping portal and hopefully it’ll track on these deals. Giftcardmall might work to trigger the Citi 10x online shopping promo if you got that one.

We always use gas gift cards but the discount needs to be much higher, at least 15 to 20%. To achieve this is to buy them with various AMEX offers at Staples and Lowes and very rarely, grocery stores. The threshold for us to buy gas gift card is at least 15%. 5% can be had virtually any time if you have an Ink card or during the quarterly grocery store promotion on Chase / Discover / Citi cards as you mentioned. You dont even need to wait for the mails from GCM.

Don’t buy GCs for retail stores, they will all be in trouble and any of them may file for ch11

I’ve seen some independently-owned Exxon stations have different prices for cash or credit, and at least some of these stations offering the ‘cash discount’, a gift card sometimes gets the cash price.

Unless you have a definite near-term use for Pier One or Neiman Marcus, I’d probably use caution buying either of these brands with the health of these two companies combined with the current overall market. Especially since they’re physical cards so it’ll take some time to receive them when you order them and whatever you’re planning on buying might not be available/ on sale anymore. I was talking to my account manager at Raise last week and they also advised against buying any gift cards for Neiman Marcus.

Reuters reports Neiman Marcus to file for bankruptcy as soon as this week

Agree. Would add Macy’s. Don’t understand why Raise sellers haven’t discounted more given the threat of bankruptcy.

In today’s news: Neiman Marcus Group is preparing to seek bankruptcy protection as soon as this week, becoming the first major U.S. department store operator to succumb to the economic fallout from the coronavirus outbreak, people familiar with the matter said.

There are Exxon and/or Mobil stations near me that charge 10 cents less per gallon if you pay with a gift card than with cash, and 10 cents more than the cash price for credit. So with a gift card, you’ll pay 20 cents less than with credit.

Good point. Again this is YMMV based on your local station so not applicable to all. Sometimes there’re Amex offers to the tune of 10% off for various places that sell gas gift cards (Staples, Lowe’s, Best Buy come to mind).

Interesting. As far as I remember, the last time I used a gift card at Exxon, they charged me the credit card price, so not even the cash discount.

Yes, I have encountered this as well. Also not just Exxon, but Sunoco too. I think this happens at locales where a cash discount is allowed over a credit card payment.
Since gift card is processed as credit card, hence paying with gift card would be charged the credit card price, even it is prepaid inside for fixed $ amount.

I’ve encountered all three possible scenarios when I’ve used a gift card where there’s a cash price and a higher credit price: credit price, cash price (most common), and lower than cash price. I don’t see how a gift card could be processed as a credit card. If it were, all stations would charge the credit price.

And odds are good Macy’s will as well.
