Google Chrome To Offer Ability To Create Virtual Credit Cards

Update 2/7/23: Now works on American Express cards.

According to 9to5google Google Chrome will soon add the ability to create and manage virtual credit cards. Google is working directly with credit card payment networks (Visa, Mastercard, and American Express) to add this functionality.

Can you please tell me if it works with visa gift cards that have expiration year 2030 and are not accepted by citi for cc payment over the phone. If so, would that allow me to use them for citi cc payments over the phone?

It seems like it will help online usage but in the case where someone gets your actual card (say a gas pump skimmer), it seems very bad as I would think they would now have the ability to create (and use) their own virtual cards based on your OG number. Tracking that seems harder than previously.

If someone uses the virtual card the charge still shows up on your account, and if you have alerts or check your account online you will know there is a problem just as fast. Also, I imagine you will need more than JUST the main card number to create a virtual card.

Lot of alternatives tried this and then killed it off. Wonder how long until Google sunsets this. Remember PayPal key?

they moved GWallet to GPay now GPay and GWallet coexist.
GPay Balance routing/acct never took off. At least more alternatives to PayPal will be better

PPK for rent and getting around the Plastiq restrictions was great. OTOH, I think it was PPK that made Plastiq up its debit card rate to be the same as the CC rate and that part is less than awesome.

Grandkids? I like to think of them as future Ps. And, hopefully, there are plenty. Do you know how many extra OD gc trips and “authorized cardholder” bonuses you can rack up? LOL

None of my Amex cards have the virtual option, but 1 of my visas does.

Same. My platinum nor gold shows the option.

The main issues are, (1) returns, and (2) the card getting charged even after the virtual number is deactivated (either manually, or after the virtual card expiration date). For issues with return, Google says “contact your bank”. Wtf! I don’t have time for that.

more often than not, return is processed electronically, no need to insert any card.

randomguy the only trouble with that is if you have to dispute a charge

True, although Privacy lets you have pretty granular control over each card you create. I’ve been using it for many years and never had an issue.

Just co confirm, the funding source behind the privacy card is a bank account and not a card, right? Thats where my concern was coming from. In case I need to do a dispute later, then that becomes much harder with a bank vs a CC

fdic Correct, it’s funded from a bank account. I love it for 99c trials and the like because you can set individual purchase limits, daily/monthly limits, pause and delete the cards. Basically, the kinds of situations where I’d need to do a dispute with a normal credit card, I use a virtual card through Privacy.com instead and never have to worry because of the granular control it gives.

Does this work well for anyone? I don’t see a way to enable it on my Google Pay payment methods page.

If this converts Amex to Visa / Mastercard, then it would be super useful. Even better would be a debit-card BIN. At a minimum, it should provide a functionality whereby I can provide an expiration date for the card, and the credit card cannot be charged beyond that date under any circumstances.

^^ this is unlikely to happen.

Amex would crush this in about two weeks and close everyone’s account if it allowed this to code as MC.
