The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Google Pay is offering a $10 Google Play credit when you use Google Pay to make at least 5 purchases, each purchase must be on a different day to be eligible. You have thirty days from your first purchase to complete the five purchase requirement.

The Fine Print

  • The Google Pay Rewards promotion (“Promotion”) is open to US residents aged 18+ who qualify for the $10 Google Play credit (“Reward”) by making 5 qualifying payments within 30 days of enrolling in the promotion.
  • New users only.
  • Maximum of 1 qualifying payment per day.
  • Promotion is open for enrollment 3/8/2018 – 5/14/2018.
  • The Promotion ends once a Reward has been earned.
  • Reward must be added to a Google Play account by 6/30/2018.
  • Certain subscriptions excluded.
  • One Reward only per participant and valid in US only.
  • Not reloadable; no cash value.

Our Verdict

Google Pay is a combination of Android Pay & Google Wallet. It’s nice to see that promotions are starting to come through. It states new users only, I’m not sure if they consider existing Android Pay users ‘new’ or not, I suspect not but likely won’t hurt to try for most people. Fingers crossed for more promotions like this in the future.

I don’t have an Android phone, but I do have a tablet. Not going to take that with me to pay (not even sure I could), but are there any decent apps to use it with? Ideally I’d just use this to buy some gift cards and be done.

Found that Raise takes Android Pay, which I assume is actually using Google Pay and they just haven’t updated the app to show that. Never added a card before the app switch to Google Pay. Will report back once I know if this works for me.

Well, I guess this was a bust as I see no credit after 5 purchases. Nothing I wasn’t going to do anyway to use more of the Chase Freedom 5% back this quarter so no loss.

My wife always keep her phone in her hands no matter what … hence i have installed google pay in her phone and we use it so frequently and it exempts me from reaching out for my phone or wallet

Not considering Android Pay users who have been early adopters and using it ever since for this promotion is really dumb

Google have started on the path of Telecom providers and other money minded corporates

How could they made the name so confusing…
Android Pay, Google Play, Google Pay, Google Wallet. Not sure if average users can figure out what’s going on any more.

From the terms, they do not consider Android Pay users to be new:

The Promotion is open to new Google Pay users who have never carried out a transaction either at an in-store or transit contactless payment terminal or on a partner merchant’s apps or sites using Google Pay or Android Pay. A partner merchant’s app or site is one that is not owned or operated by Google.

Well it could potentially eliminate almost everyone as Google Payment corp AKA “Google pay” is the umbrella corp for all money transactions at Alphabet (google). I pulled up my old TOS for Google Checkout from 7/2006 when they were wanting a Paypal like product for Google. Took advantage of some the Promos back then but it was another Google+ (FB wannabe) never took off.

Now anyone that has bought anything from the Google Play store kor Google express promo) or added a payment method (CC, PP acct, Phone carrier billing) and used even for a free album, song, book, movie, etc has used Google Pay might not get the reward.

Never used the Android Pay or Google wallet App, mainly just use Samsung Pay and Chase Pay.

Wild to remember when I got a Beta invite for Gmail and 1GB was insane (Hotmail was 50MB if I recall) I now pay for extra acct storage.

Not even worth time opening and setting up a new google acct for this promo or to chrun for Album’s or Movies, but hey I’ll give it a shot with existing acct but as new app user as it wont cost me anything.
