Aside from these limited-edition freebies, there’s almost nothing that a local comic book store sells that I can’t get for the same price or less from an online retailer. The comic book stores I’ve visited for this type of promotion have always asked for a (voluntary) cash donation in exchange for these “free” comic books. Two of those stores near me closed last year, and another store two towns over is basically on its last legs: a metaphor for the entire institution of comic shops, perhaps?

The entire industry of comics, perhaps.

When an industry stops pumping $ into making new IPs (that might not succeed) but keep churning the “proven” ones (“well established and huge profit making IP” 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 then prequels, sequels), it is usually a sign that they are going under as a whole.

In their defense every day millions of kids are born and/or reach reading and/or watching age who have never ever heard of Spiderman. And millions of adults become too old for comics. So they have a new audience naturally built in. Comic book shops are failing but Comics as an industry is doing well. The Marvel and DC apps are how kids today get their comics, not from physical stores. Also the big two make a bulk of their money from animation and live action.
