Our Verdict
I try to avoid rental cars, so not a very attractive promotion for me but should be useful to some readers.
Hat tip to FM
Tried to book from LAX and no availability. Keep getting the message: “There are no rewards currently available for your date/time/location”
I just booked a week rate from the airport but still have to pay taxes and fees. I had 8 days and the week brought me down to $123 and a 2 week award was $81. So I did 1week due to better value.
This is a fantastic deal for those of us who got bent over backwards from the recent large reward point devaluation. I held on to my points, but used 24,000 of them with this promo for four 2-week reservations. With this promo, the point redemption for a 2 week standard vehicle rental (compact-premium car) is 6,000 points. The redemption rate with the old redemption rate would’ve been 5,500 points. I have to wonder if this promo occurred because of backlash from a lot of reward members.
Thriffty car rental is offering free day rental which I think is better
“ † Free Day Reward of 625 Bonus Points is available to Thrifty Blue Chip members who book and complete a rental between 10/20/19-12/31/19. Minimum 1 day rental required. Free day Bonus points will be awarded 6-8 weeks upon completion of the qualifying rental and valid through 12/31/2020. Maximum of 5 Free Days can be earned during the promotional period. A separate notification will be provided when the Free Day Reward is available. Point redemption applies to per day time and mileage charges only. Points may only be redeemed within the U.S. and Canada, according to the renting locations terms and conditions and subject to availability and blackout dates. Applicable taxes, surcharges or additional fees are extra.‡ Available at select locations.”
It’s great if you have PC status and already have a points reservation. I cancelled my original one and rebooked. Not only was the points cost 20% lower, but the rental rate had declined (so my taxes & fees did as well).
