Hotels.com Extending Free Night Certificates By One Year

Hotels.com has it’s own rewards program where you get a free night after you complete ten stays (worth the average night price). After being earned these certificates are valid for one year. Hotels.com is offering to extend these free night certificates by one year when requesting this via chat. Unfortunately it’s extremely difficult to get a hold of chat agents at the moment as they are mostly only handling customers with reservations in the next three days. Hopefully at some stage this is coded and all certificates that are expiring soon are extended automatically.

i called and it only took 10 minutes to get through the menu and wait for someone. no problem adding a year.

guess they are hoping people won’t call.

If you need to create activity in your account to extend your expiration on free night certs and/or partial earned nights, just book a cheap hostel in Asia for under $2 for tonight. A no-show at one of these places still counts, I did this successfully in Nov. Should be fine now, assuming there are still some open.

Isn’t there a minimum room rate to make it eligible for the one night free after 10 nights?

No. The value of the free night depends upon your average rate which you paid.

of course that will dilute the value of your next free night. If that doesn’t matter, its a great idea. i’m going to message them as a first attempt.

What they really need to do is extend the inactivity threshold at least 6 months. This entire business of having to message them is stupid.

I thought the reward night only expired after one year of inactivity in your account. Not after one year of being earned.
Perhaps I misunderstood?

You are correct. Here is what my reward night text says:
“Book and stay by Sep 25, 2020 to keep your collected nights and any reward* nights you haven’t redeemed. (You have 12 months from the last date you collected or redeemed nights.)”

What about partial earned nights? E.g. if I earned 3 out of 10 and my last night was almost a year ago, that would go to waste.

Same here. Got 8/10 and my year is almost up.

Ditto with 8/10. Got the email “book and stay by June so you don’t lose your progress” while everyone was scrambling to cancel everything.

I don’t understand how they are extending validity of fully earned nights due to Covid19 but then for partial nights they tell you go out and travel. Doesn’t make sense. Free nights have a value we counted on when making bookings, whether they are fully or partially earned.
