IHG PointsBreak List, Hotels For 5,000 Points (October 2017 – January 31st 2018) – Now Bookable

Reposting because these are now bookable.

IHG has released the list of hotels participating in their PointsBreak promotion for October 30th, 2017 through January 31st, 2018. These hotels cost only 5,000 points per night and are usually the best use of IHG points possible, the downside is that it’s only for specific hotels and they usually book out fast.

Properties Of Interest

  • Crowne Plaza Belfast. Honestly Belfast as a city really surprised me, really enjoyed my time there and would definitely go back. You have places like the giants causeway that you can do as a day trip as well. This hotel seems to usually go for £150+ per night (almost $200).
  • Holiday Inn Cordoba. Another beautiful place to visit.

Our Verdict

No intercontinental properties on the list. Honestly this list isn’t that exciting at all. Hopefully when they become bookable they add some more properties. Let me know what properties you find interesting in the comments below.

In the past, how long did this promotion or availabilty typically run for US properties roughly?

You can acquire Hyatt points by MS Chase URs. 5000 URs is roughly $25.

Plenty of Hyatt properties are always 5K points, I don’t get the attraction of IHG. What am I missing?

5,000 Hyatt points = $85
5,000 IHG points = $30

BW youre right. Lots of nice Hyatt House/Place are only 5K a night and theyre very simmiler to Holiday Inn if not better.
BUT 5K Hyatt is $85.50 to buy where 5K IHG is only $28.75 and if you dont carry a fancy Sapphire with an annual fee. The Hyatt card gives you 3 points at Hyatt and 2 points only on dining where the IHG card gives you 5 points at IHG and 2 points on dinning, groceries and gas, In short: 5K IHG is much cheaper and easier to achieve then 5K Hyatt.

Normally the properties are what, 15-25K though right? So unless where you want to go at the time you’re going matches up to one of these 5K sale properties, you’re only getting 4-6 nights out of the 100K IHG bonus whereas it’s relatively easy to get 8 nights out of the Hyatt bonus, at better properties (IMO). That was the point of my original comment, I don’t see the draw of IHG, unless it’s the only card left for you I suppose.

For me, for PointBreaks I either hope I get lucky they’re next to/on the way to out of town family, or use as an excuse to get to a city.

San Diego, Denver, and Nashville hotels seem interesting.

I booked 23 bookings, since its refundable, I grabbed whatever weekends was available in Princeton NJ Southeast and Westfield MA (those are nice Holliday Inn’s and a good catch, usually 20K or $100+) and then we will plan our schedule and cancel accordingly, also I booked some doubles so i can get some friends to join us and maybe charge them like $75 a night, maybe even someone from here wants to join us.
Anyway you could buy IHG points until 11/03 for 100% bonus, the best deal is when you buy 30K for 60K total for $345 which is $115 for 20K and that comes out to $28.75 for a 5K night which is insane!

Hasn’t IHG cracked down on this behavior in the past?

Your actions, while good for you, are obviously bad for everyone else. The hotels tend to make a limited number of point break rooms available, and when they’re gone, they’re gone. Your 23 bookings are undoubtedly a good chunk of the hotel’s total availability.

Didn’t IHG have some sort of account limit? They should definitely program one — something like 2 or 3 reservations per hotel (maybe 5 nights total) would be more than fair.

I bought the points legally from IHG and i redeemed them legally on their website.
They give free cancellations up to 24 hours.
They seem to be desperate so why not take advantage.

Don’t be greedy. You’re allowed no more than 2 reservations (each one can be any number of days in a single stay). Even though IHG’s IT system is so antiquated that they can’t enforce the rule electronically, ALL your reservations are likely to be CANCELLED by the hotel when they examine the reservations manually.

I think it is the fact that you are blocking other people from booking the Points Break rate on rooms you aren’t going to actually use. Once the hotel books all the Points Breaks rooms and goes off the list, if you cancel, that room does not become available to someone else at the Points Break rate.

But the fact that you want to charge your “friends” $75 a night for a room that cost you $30 leads me to believe you probably don’t care. 😉

I dont want to preach what you should do. When people you know feel that you ripped them off its not worth it in the long run. (favors, wedding gifts, networking etc;) Ive kinda done this when I was much younger, not worh it imo.

Right now you dont have to do the cancelling trick because IHG is offering 100% bonus points when buying points until 11/03
So if you buy 30K points its $345 and you get 60K points which is basically $115 for 20K the same as the points plus cash canceling trick.
(Its especially handy for the people who dont have IHG points in their account and therefore cant do the book/cancel trick because they dont have the 20K points to do a cash and points booking).

Although keep in mind:
If you book/cancel with cash/points and use your IHG card you will earn 5points per dollar for the points you bought.
If you buy staright up points from IHG you dont get 5 points per dollar because youre essentially buying from a 3rd party and its not considered an IHG purchase…
