There is currently a deal in Shell Fuel Rewards to purchase 5 quarts of Pennzoil full synthetic oil and get up to $20 back in Fuel Rewards. I purchased a 5 quart container at Walmart for $24.35 (inc tax). Paid with Chase Pay (5X points). Net result will be $3.16 for 5 quarts of full synthetic oil.

At least Chase is offering $.05 off per gallon (gold status) through 2019.

If you have your Fuel Rewards account connected to Chase Pay, and then use Chase Pay and make a five gallon purchase, then you will receive a $0.25/gallon reward. Plus use your Freedom for 5% back. Rinse and repeat. I believe the $0.25 offer expires 12/31. Since I have the IHG card, which adds $0.06 in savings, I have been saving $0.31/gallon for awhile now, plus 5% back via Freedom. The Chase Pay/Fuel Rewards combo is a bit difficult to figure out at first but once you figure it out it’s easy and works great. Of course I’ll have to switch to a different method on 1/1/19.

I admit I don’t fully understand how Fuel Rewards works, but I always seem to have a large discount ready in my account.

There’s been some 25 cents off bonus, I think using chase pay. Add that to the regular 5 cents off bonus, or .10 on Tuesday, and you get .30 to .35 cents off every fill up. I’ve been paying as low as $1.72 plus earning 5x UR Points for using Freedom.

That’s probably the bonus you’re seeing.

I always love all the Shell/ Fuel Rewards haters with every Shell promo/ post.. If you can’t/won’t use Shell, shut up about how it is more expensive. You aren’t adding to the conversation.

The Shell station by me is on par price wise with all the other gas stations. I use the Shell Fuel Rewards app that is linked to my Chase Pay using Chase Freedom card. I fill up on Tuesdays and get the Big Ten discount. So on average I get 10¢ off, 15¢ off on every 5th fill-up, and 5% back from Chase this quarter (worth about 10¢). So this quarter I have averaged approximately 20¢ off per gallon.

What does the “up to 5c/gal” refer to?

It sounds as if anybody with a IHG link would automatically maintain Gold status, which is 5 cents off.

But the “up to 5c/gal” makes me wonder if Gold status still needs to be earned by filling up 6 times in 3 months, at which point there would be no benefit of keeping IHG linked. Confusing.

Nearest Costco gas; 3.00/gal
nearest lowest Shell gas; 3.26/gas
Costco gas discount: 5x UR via costco cash card
Shell gas discount: 6c/gal (IHG) + 13% off via Shall GC bought from BestBuy (AMEX 300-30 and earn BB 2% reward and 1% UA portal).
Costco wait time: 5-10 minutes
Shell wait time: 0 minute
Costco gas quality: A-
Shell gas quality: A
Final cost:
Costco gas: 2.775/gal (1UR=1.5c)
Shell gas: 2.784/gal (1 UA=1c)
So I choose Shell gas.

Compared to Costco or ARCO in my area, Shell is 40-50c more expensive per gallon. Maybe if someone was getting reimbursed for gas by their employer this would make sense, but otherwise we mostly ignore the Shell that is right by our place

Hey there, the shell near me is the same. Much more expensive than other gas stations. I only went there when promotions were going on for 25 cents savings or higher that stacked with the 6 cents gold status savings.
