Issue With Mastercard Giftcards (Not Authorized, Funds Then Drained)

Update 11/12/19: Readers keep asking for updates on this. The update is that nothing has changed, the problem persists and despite rumors that affected cards would have funds returned last Friday that hasn’t happened.

Original post: It looks like there is currently an issue with Mastercard gift cards when trying to use them to load bluebird/serve or purchase money orders. It seems that an error “not authorized” occurs, transaction is then declined but then funds are drained from the card. Not sure if there is a way to really resolve this issue, but something to keep in mind. If this has happened to you, please share your experiences below.

This only happens when you drain the funds completely. If you leave a 1 cent balance on the card it does not happen. Also, my experience is with Staples MCGC not sure if it applies to all the MCGC.

Plastiq DP
Used BHN MCGC from Staples last Friday – drained on Plastiq w/o issue (used FFD) on Mortgage and Auto loans. Verified both in Plastiq and GCM –

from the comments it looks like it might be a POS issue a with both MB and BHN MCGC for both MO and BB/Serve loads at a variety of retailers

Do we have any DPs with particulars (Meta, USBank, Sunrise?).

It’s metabank/blackhawk cards having the issue.

Experienced the same issue with Blackhawk visa gc last week so not sure this is isolated to mc

SkehGuy thanks for the DP. Can you provide details?

Experienced it with a $200 MasterCard meta I purchased from Staples last week. Dollar General has been nice, but not helpful getting the funds back. Trying to dispute it via BHN but I’m not getting my hopes up.

Jay
Jay

Josh , I assume you tried to load Serve?

If so, thx a lot for the DP, since I have a bunch of the same GC’s left and was just waiting to go to DG once my Serve limits reset on the 1st…

Yep that’s correct

FD works fine for loads. DG is where I had a problem loading Serve as well.

If it’s a blackhawk card, call the number on back of blackhawk visa (even if you have mcgc) the number on the back of mcgc is helpless. I had issues with both visa and mc purchased from ODOM and liquidated at dg. They will open a case for you when you call. The funds are there but the card is blocked untill you provide proof of purchase of the card and proof of refund from DG.

Ctown Bin

This just happened to me at DG. What do you mean, proof of refund from DG? The manager was nice, but he couldn’t/wouldn’t give me proof that the transactions were declined. He just said “you can see on your end they were declined, that means no money was taken and it will be put back, now it’s just pending, if you wait it will be put back even if it now looks like it’s gone.”Argued a couple of times but without success. So all I left the store with was the receipt of the one that DID go through. Any ideas?

Can you provide the Blackhawk Visa telephone number please?

tb it’s on the back of the card

How to dispute against to mc team …it happened to me as well:-(

This happened to me and I’m out $600. BH told me to wait a week, then file a dispute. How does something like this even happen?

They told me to do the same. Wish I knew how it happened.

In another note, BofA Online Banking is down. Potential hack. I am frustrated.

Down for me too. Why do you say “Potential hack.”?

SamL

Is AmEx down too? When you try to log in it asks for last 4 of SS# (which I did not enter, as I’m not sure what’s going on).

Some are reporting getting e-mails that their account fell below $25. And ATM’s down as well. It’s crazy!

It was a national outage for BoA that lasted about an hour, the back to normal. (Anyway, off topic for this thread.)

WM doesn’t like MC debits (you have to do the “change payment” trick). Any suggestion it’s on their end?

Eric
Eric

No because if you leave some money on the MCGC like a 1 cent there is no problem. It seems to be some corner case when you drain the cards completely then you have this problem. Again not everyone is having this issue but it could have been those that tried to drain the cards that particular weekend. The “change payment” thing still works.

2 $200 MCGF from staples drained, transaction declined, trying to buy $399.10 MO at Pick and Save supermarket in WI . Both of the cards show 0 balance.

What was your total with MO fee? Exactly $400?

Worth noting: If this is true, that would negate the theory that NOT draining the card all the way (in other words, leaving a few cents on the card) avoids the issue. See the very first post in this thread by Unclesam.

This is a pretty important data point (and contradicts a fair amount of speculation).

Can anyone else confirm the same experience?

Josh

Tried to buy MO at Harris teeter on 10/22. Funds drained and got not authorized. Started dispute process. BH needs to get their shit together.

It would be awesome when you post that it already happened to you, if you could provide…

– what kind of MCGC you were using (e.g. Meta, USB, Sunrise,…)

– where you were using it (e.g. WM, Grocery chain, DG, FD,…)

– what you were trying to do (e.g. MO, load prepaid,…)

Might prove helpful to hopefully figure out a pattern… 🙂

-MCGC, Meta
-DG
-Serve

both purchased from Giant ~3 weeks earlier.

$500 x 2 drained. DG told me to wait 3-5 biz days. today was biz day 5. I’m calling GCM tomorrow to file disputes.UGH!

Also, where you bought it. (I’ve only seen staples.)

also, single card or multiple swipe transaction? (It seems it may be on multiple swipes?)

Also please include your STATE. This might be based on geography (ie only happens in some regions, but not others).

It would be really helpful for everyone if you included ALL these details in every report (including reports on success AND failures). Without these kinds of details, it just appears random. Nothing is random, there’s a pattern in there someplace!

I recently purchased two MC gift cards, one from Staples ($200) and another from safeway ($500). Then I bought 2 money orders with the cards at Giant without any problem. It would have really scared me if this kind of mishaps had happened, but to be safe, I won’t buy any MC gift cards in the future. I heard MC had security issues. Now this gives me another reason of not buying MC gift cards.

I used $500 MetaBank MCGC From’s safeway to load BB at Walmart. Machine froze a few times, retried with cancel trick. Then load was successful the next swipe. I guess I got lucky.

I guess I’ll stay away from now on and use them for federal taxes online to drain.

I have had 3 $200 cards from Staples with funds taken off, only at Publix. I even had the cashier void a transaction which should have put the funds back on one of them, but it didn’t. I’ve prepayed my electric and insurance bills with the rest of them. That seemed to work.

TravelWithMiles

Bought $200 Staples MCGC from last week’s special on Saturday. Used it to pay for MO that totaled exactly $200 at Winn Dixie (grocery store chain) and it said Not Authorized. I then paid with another card. $$ came off both cards though. Metabank says charge went through and I need to go back to the store. Opened case with their POS debit vendor and should hear back “within 48 business hours”. Metabank did say if I couldn’t get a resolution from the vendor I could go back to them with an affidavit that says I tried everything I could in good faith with the merchant with no luck. Hopefully it won’t get to that point.

Gene

did you hear back from the merchant/POS vendor?

I’m glad I don’t buy MCGCs

Don B

I am the same way. I stick with Visa GC only now. I bought some MCGC back in 2016 and did not have a problem. My normal spot stopped taking MCGC for a MO. I hear too many horror stories like this one every few months and I haven’t touched them since.

Purchased the card in early October from a grocery store, Winn-Dixie. BIN 5113 32. I tried using them at the same Winn-Dixie last week. Not Authorized. Funds drained and have remained drained. The store has reported that they are not over balance in their registers. In order to finish up that transaction (money orders), I used other cards of the exact same type that I had previously bought at the same time with no issue.

This happened to me. I called and they told me to wait 3 days. I haven’t had time to call back. I’m hoping they handle this right. Really upsetting.

So did the funds come back to the card??
