Issue With Mastercard Giftcards (Not Authorized, Funds Then Drained) – Issue Now Resolved, Funds Back On Cards

Update 12/16/19: Funds should now be back on the affected cards with the line detail of ‘Missing MasterCard Settlement Credit’. Not sure if you need to have filed a claim to have the funds restored or not

Update 11/12/19: Readers keep asking for updates on this. The update is that nothing has changed, the problem persists and despite rumors that affected cards would have funds returned last Friday that hasn’t happened.

Original post: It looks like there is currently an issue with Mastercard gift cards when trying to use them to load bluebird/serve or purchase money orders. It seems that an error “not authorized” occurs, transaction is then declined but then funds are drained from the card. Not sure if there is a way to really resolve this issue, but something to keep in mind. If this has happened to you, please share your experiences below.

No dispute required.

This is DP. I had two cards that had this issue. I reported/disputed one card and the other card I didn’t report and was about to report it soon. But on 12/16/19 I saw both fund were available after seeing this post.

While I didn’t get the email on 12/16/19 when it was fixed, I received a resolution email from them yesterday afternoon.

One DP question that needs to be asked: Were all those whose funds were drained on account of this issue using their cards only for serve loads and/or money orders? Or are there any DPs for such drain when used normally to pay for goods and services? This will help determine future direction.

I never had a problem using them all the way to the penny to pay rent. But rent portal charges CC fees.

I also filed disputes sometime in October and got the full balance back on all of my affected cards on 12/16 although I have NOT received the “Dispute Resolved” emails. Hope BHN will improve their network, system, and security to prevent this incident from happening again.

Has anyone who just got the full balance back been able to drain the whole balance? Thanks.

Ken Dano not sure what you mean by “drain”, but I used mine IMMEDIATELY. What a pain in the ass that was.

Glad to hear funds are returned to those who temporarily lost them!

Is it safe to fully drain MCGCs at this point?

To add my DP, my funds were drained on a Serve load at DG in October. I never reached out to BHN or filed a claim, and $200 was credited back to my affected card today.

Just received email from BHN Support that the missing money was credited back after their investigation.

Contacted with BHN on 10/27, but BHN was not very responsive. It claimed it did not received any inquiry on 10/30. So I filed a complaint against BHN at BBB on 10/30. Filed a complaint against BHN at CFPB on 11/24. BHN responded to both BBB and CFPB that it was investigating the issue.

Thanks for sharing. What is the email subject? Did they credit back to the same MC gift cards in which the fund was drained? I’m hoping BHN is crediting the money back for all dispute claims.

Does this happen to everyone trying to load bb/serve at walmart? I loaded my bb at walmart (IN) on Oct. 22 and Oct. 25 (loaded $200 each time, total amount one each mastercard gc). All of them went through without any issues. Now I am too scare to drain all money on my gift cards.

ive been reading various blogs and ive found 2 stories of refunds from BHN for this disappearing money problem in 2019.

ive filed disputes with the BBB & CFPB. BHN has replied to both that they are investigating, which will take 90 days.

if all of us file similar complaints (short and concise) it might pressure BHN to resolve the problem. 90 is too long. and there is no guarantee of recovery of funds that BHN lost.

William Charles can you point us to any info regarding arbitration? thanks!
