Most people when I visited did not know about the offer. Only when the guy behind me specifically asked about it did the staff verbally confirm it was valid today, and then the rest of the people in line perked up. I had my donut at the register by then and the clerk knew it should be free.
Krispy franchise owners lose a ton of money when corporate forces them to participate in all-day no-strings-attached giveaways like these, so store employees are often instructed by managers not to acknowledge the promo unless the customer brings it up first.
But National Donut Day is the same Friday in June every year, so not knowing about this is on you, especially if you’re a frequent customer.
That said, I did purchase half a dozen donuts for my wife’s colleagues at school as well, so they didn’t lose as much money off me this time.
I am a member of their loyalty club, have their app & get frequent emails from them. They used to proudly and often advertise their free donuts. I got many emails touting their $2 doz donuts when you buy a doz for National Donut Day, but NOTHING about a free donut until today’s (day of deal!) email. I also had to find out when their (yearly) day of free doz donuts for HS/college grads was from Slickdeals. ☹️
