Kroger Stores Now Limit $500 in Gift Card Purchases per Transaction (Best Buy Only)

Update: Looks like the $500 cap is only on Best Buy gift cards and doesn’t apply to other brands. Hat tip to MtM

Original post: According to Milestomemories, Kroger stores now limits us to just $500 in gift card purchases per transaction. Previously, it was $1,999.99 with self-checkout, and more with customer service. They also have a limit of 6 swipes per credit card per day which means that even if you break up your transactions, you won’t be able to do more than $3k per day on a single card.

This is a quite a limitation for those who hit Kroger hard. I assume it’s in effect for all stores under the Kroger umbrella.

Why were people buying so many Best Buy gift cards? Was there a special deal going on / some way to liquidate them?

That’s what I’d like to know, I keep seeing people go crazy over lowe’s cards for example. Like who’s buying so much stuff at a hardware store?

Was able to do $6000 closed loop cards today in 1 transaction at the customer service counter at a King Soopers in CO.

My king Soopers stopped carrying variable load Amazon gc’s so I can’t but $500 in one purchase, really put a dent in my 4x fuel point purchases. Customer service told me to go to Best buy.

A lot of stores seem to be doing this. My local Safeway store just limited to $500 per person per day. This is going to reduce my my combined Amex spending by $100,000 per year as I cancel more Amex cards. One cashier said there was probably one person that ruined it for the rest. Of course this is still cashier specific as some cashiers will let you do more.

Did you try $950? $800 VGCs and $900 Happy cards worked, but not $1K. System limit may be somewhere between $901-$999. Tried $950 at my other Safeway but told <$500 CC OK or $500+ cash only.

I used Amex BCE to buy GCs mixed w/ organic purchases to mask price & received SUB. I suspect Safeway Pharmacy does not share L3 to protect health info.

I’m working w/ locations where it’s not my 1st time shopping, so if purchases post to Amex as “pk of gum” or “1 banana” then I don’t buy GCs. Otherwise, no issues yet, $6K category spend on BCP and $2K MSR on Amex Everyday.

I did 2 transactions over just under $2k each at 2 different Kroger’s today with no issue. But I am buying variable load visas and not closed loops

I purchased $900 worth of AMZ yesterday at the self checkout in the same transaction at a Kroger in Georgia. Maybe they mean $500 per GC?
