Kroger Stores Now Limit $500 in Gift Card Purchases per Transaction (Best Buy Only)

Update: Looks like the $500 cap is only on Best Buy gift cards and doesn’t apply to other brands. Hat tip to MtM

Original post: According to Milestomemories, Kroger stores now limits us to just $500 in gift card purchases per transaction. Previously, it was $1,999.99 with self-checkout, and more with customer service. They also have a limit of 6 swipes per credit card per day which means that even if you break up your transactions, you won’t be able to do more than $3k per day on a single card.

This is a quite a limitation for those who hit Kroger hard. I assume it’s in effect for all stores under the Kroger umbrella.

Mine switched to under $1,000 about 2 years ago. Which naturally has limited it to 1.

Verified, just came out of the Kroger. $500 per transaction, even the csr girl at the desk thought it was stupid.

So what happens now if you’re at self checkout and get $1,000? You scan the first $500, everything fine, but scanning the next one will alert the selfscan associate?

Can’t we just buy $500 in multiple transactions?

You can scan whatever you want, when you go to pay the check out tells you that the transaction cannot be processed. You can do multiple transactions.

So hard coded?

Correct. The customer service desk girl came over the self check out, suspended the transaction & took it over to the CSR desk. She thought maybe it was a self checkout thing. We tried the $1000+ transaction at her register & it still wouldn’t go through. Took off one of the gc & it worked. Had to do 2 transactions.

Yes we can, verified and confirmed.

These limitations are really slowing down the process. My husband was at WM today for a M.O. and was told that anything over $100 will now require a licence. This is very concerning as I always tried to stay under the radar by only giving my licence 2 per week, while getting about 15 more without one.

anything over $100 or $1000?

$100, had been $1000 for awhile now, but was told by associate that they had training on collecting info on anything over $100 starting today.

I was at two WMs today (11/1/19 afternoon) and purchased a MO at each for nearly $1,000. Neither asked for DL.

Went to a different WM today and had much better luck. But the associate did tell me that the new $100 policy was going to start in January at his store.

I was told this a month ago by a CSR at WM. $100 limit before ID required coming to all. I emailed William at the time to inform but he didn’t think it worthy to post.

Can confirm that I was able to get 2 x $500 at Fry’s in Arizona today at self checkout in one transaction. Appears it has not hit here yet.

I just picked up $700 in cards at self checkout in my local Kroger chain. No problems at all.

Kroger is a big company with many brands. Do we know where these reports were coming from?

I’m also in AZ & I had the opposite experience. Transaction would not go through

Did a Frys run today in the east valley. 3 different stores let me purchase 2x $500 VGC at self checkout. No issues.

IME cards will decline for the same purchase amount back to back, so that means you’ll have to change the amount each time if you want to use the same card. That’s annoying.

Was able to purchase 3 separate transactions at different stores, 15×100, 13×100 and 15×100, at cashier.

Just purchased two $500 VGCs.

Does this change only apply to closed loop cards?

So if buying a $500 Visa gift card then after the activation fee it becomes $506 (or something like that). Will that now not be possible anymore cause it’s over the $500 ?

I have the same question, but I think it’d go through fine

philco

That would make the most sense but remember prior Kroger limits included the fee.

Shalom

Yes, I would also think it will include the fee cause the register probably just looks at the final price. If anyone has actually tried it and know – plz let us know. We’ll appreciate it. Thanks again 🙂

ALways had issues at self checkout at kroger. They would always send me to a person or to customer service to do any variable gc’s

FWIW, I was in Kroger in Michigan today (Nov. 1) and used my Sears MC to buy a $500 Visa card plus 2 x $50 Happy gift cards – no problem with $606 purchase (minus a $10 credit for Happy cards)
