Marriott In Process Of Renegotiating Credit Card Deal

In a recent Host Hotels & Resorts Inc earnings conference call CEO, President and Director James F. Risoleo had this to say:

  • Going back to the rewards program alone, I mean, Marriott — this will impact the rewards program. Marriott is in the process of negotiating a new credit card deal, which we think will benefit us as well, through lower credit card commissions. So those are some of the things that we’re looking at as we move throughout 2017 and into 2018.

For those not familiar with Host Hotels & Resorts, they are a major owner of Marriott hotels (really a spin off of Marriott, you can read more here). This new credit card deal might not impact cardholders directly, but I do find that there are usually some changes when these contracts are renegotiated. This deal will likely be more complex than most due to the acquisition of Starwood and the fact that American Express is still issuing SPG credit cards.

Another aspect that might change is whether these cards do or don’t have the 5/24 rule applied to them. Interestingly the business card isn’t subject to this rule and the personal card is.
