Navy Federal American Express Relaunch + 30,000 Points Signup Bonus (40k Targeted Offer)

[Update: There’s also a targeted offer for 40,000 points after $4,000 spend which can be found somewhere in your login. (ht Scott)]

As expected, Navy Federal has relaunched their American Express card with new bonus categories, and added a signup bonus as well.

The Offer

Direct Link to offer

  • Signup for the Navy Federal American Express card and get 30,000 bonus points ($300 value) after spending $3,000 within 3 months.

Offer expires October 31, 2019.

Card Details

  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • 3x points per $1 spent at supermarkets, gas stations, restaurants, and transit
    • 1x point per $1 spent on all other purchases
  • No annual fees
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • No balance transfer fees
  • No cash advance fees
  • 0% APR for 12 months
  • Points are same as those on other NFCU cards (e.g GO REWARDS & Flagship)
  • Points are worth 1¢ towards travel and there is a minimum redemption of 5,000 points (1,000 for digital downloads and 3,000 for gift cards)

Our Verdict

Looks pretty good rewards rates for a no-fee card, plus no foreign transaction fees. Also a nice signup bonus. You need to be a member a current or previous member of the armed forces (and related), or be a family member of a member. Hats off to all our service members and veterans.

Seems they are trying to compete with the Wells Fargo Propel Amex. The no balance transfer fee is nice, as well as the no cash advance fee, but for a HP, I think I’d prefer Wells since I get an extra 1.5x out of their points.

If I remember it correctly you get multiple products on one HP if it’s within 30 days.

Correct. No hard pull on my application. Just got another NFCU card a couple weeks ago

Just checked my NFCU account and there is a 40,000 points on $4,000 spend offer for this card, YMMV.

Where did you see this? Was it under the ‘Offers’ page?

Did you find that in your email, on the app or on the web portal?

I wonder if they’ll match?

They don’t

Just to clarify, it’s possible to have both this and the higher tier card, yes?

I would like to know this too, as I have a 10 month old flagship

Is the 0% APR for balance transfer amounts as well?

Checked, if within 30 days of opening it is. This is pretty useful for me because NFCU always gives me higher limits off the bat

The reward flyer says points can be redeemed at 1 cent a point for statement credit (in 5k intervals)

3% unlimited cash back at grocery gets my attention.

If you can get it, the CNB Crystal Visa Infinite is a MUCH better option.

Except the actual cash rate for points is only like.85cpp. Nfcu points are more valuable for cash. For travel and perks the cnb crystal is way better though.

Nice. I’ve been a member since May with a checking account, CD and Flagship as of late July. Tempted to pull the trigger on this but feel like it may be too soon.

That minimum redemption of 5,000 points ($50) is the weak link in this card. They clearly want to see some breakage. I have a philosophical problem with a member-owned credit union setting up a system that encourages breakage.

With bonuses of 500 and 300, I’m fine with the breakage.

Any easier way to join this CU than enlisting ?

Family members can join. My dad served in the U.S. Navy.

Applied and approved. The site said I’d wait up to 24 hours to hear, but got an email within 4. Only logged into my opened account yesterday for the first time, hadn’t even deposited anything yet. I’d established an account previously as I was toying with getting the Flagship, but this card makes me happier as I do a lot of grocery spend. Maybe later. They gave me a 20k credit limit, which would buy a lot of groceries. I unlocked EQ for the application which shows 10 CCs opened within the last year. I went with the 30,000 offer after a few logon attempts with no 40,000 showing up, maybe that’s just for established accounts. I have a 755 score with EQ.

FYI – I previously did a web search on NFCU when thinking Flagship and found they’d been fined for deceptive practices regarding missed loan payments. Don’t like what I read much. I won’t be missing any payments, but still.

Since this is an Amex product, will the rat team claw back the welcome bonus if manufacture spending on this card?

Dan
Dan

No, because RAT is part of American Express Centurion Bank. The NFCU American Express is issued and serviced by NFCU. NFCU pays American Express for the license to issue the American Express card and to use their network only. American Express Centurion Bank has no bearing on the NFCU card program or servicing.

I loaded a Serve with this CC and it posted as a retail purchase, and earned rewards points.

Aaron
Aaron

the green Serve card? i wonder if this will also work with the wf propel amex card and the penfed pathfinder amex card…

Aaron
Aaron

also, did you set your cash advance limit to zero?

Tanya
Tanya

I did not set my cash advance to zero. Yes, green…apparently this is something the seasoned veterans already know, that non AmEx issued AmEx’s will often (or always?) code as purchase with Serve loads – is this perhaps an American Express network requirement??? Only one card can be set up to load each Serve card, you can’t set up multiple CCs on your Serve. Perhaps removing and adding a new one can work I read somewhere that the limit is $200/day & 1k/month with AmEx credit card loads but haven’t tested myself.
