Our Verdict
Personally I’d have preferred the expired offer of $300 bonus on this card (plus Walmart+ membership which this current offer doesn’t have). But I thought it worth highlighting this offer for those who have interest in the 0% APR on balance transfers – something uncommon. (We occasionally see 0% on purchases, rarely on balance transfers.)
I’ll add this to our list of 0% APR cards. Just keep in mind that carrying a balance on a personal credit card can have big negative impact on your credit score.
It’s not necessarily worth using this card after you get the sign up bonus as there are other credit cards that offer a higher rate on everyday purchases, but the sign up bonus might be attractive to some people. NFCU is also offering a bonus of 40,000 points and Amazon Prime membership on the Flagship rewards card.
Navy Federal is only available for military and veterans – full eligibility information can be found here (plus family members. Even if they are deceased). Learn more about Navy Federal credit cards in the post Navy Federal Credit Union (NFCU) Credit Cards: List, Best Cards & Things You Must Know.
Hat tip to reader Oscar
The balance transfer interest rate is no longer 0% and stands at 1.99%. The bonus offer remains the same at $250 for $2500 spend within 90 days.
Dang it I just missed this one. I’m making my app-o-rama list and this was on it…bad timing.
The fine print on the application page states “If you transfer a balance, interest will be charged on purchases made with your credit card unless your purchases have a 0% APR, or you pay the entire balance (including any transferred balances) in full each month by the payment due date.” Does this mean if we do a balance transfer, and also charge new purchases to the card, we would have to pay the full balance (including the transferred balance) to avoid getting charged the regular APR for purchases? Which means we can either use it for balance transfers or new purchases to hit the SUB, but if we do both, we lose the benefit of the 0% APR for 12 months on balance transfers?
That’s what it sounds like to me. In the past with other issuers I’ve found that if I pay the minimum due PLUS the amount I spent on purchases that cycle, I wouldn’t see interest on the card when there is a 0% BT revolving. My assumption would have been that it would be the same at NFCU, but the text you’ve quoted does seem to say different
How do they verify membership eligibility? Do they have their own process or use a third party?
I was in the market for a balance transfer card, the 0% transfer fee sealed the deal for me. Applied and was approved for $25,000 line of credit. Thanks DOC.
Have you used the card for new purchases as well to hit the SUB? Do you have to pay the full balance each month, including the transferred balance, to avoid paying the regular interest rate on that balance? The sign-up page says ““If you transfer a balance, interest will be charged on purchases made with your credit card unless your purchases have a 0% APR, or you pay the entire balance (including any transferred balances) in full each month by the payment due date.”
If I do not qualify (no military ties/affiliations) to be a member of the NFCU then I cannot apply for this card, correct?
Or, is it possible for an existing NFCU member to refer me (and hopefully score a referral bonus) and thus make me eligible? Will that work?
TIA for any tips!
Even if you’re referred by a random NFCU member you still have to meet the membership eligibility requirements to join.
Ok, that’s what I had thought, but thanks for clarifying.
Which credit report do they pull?
TX TransUnion for credit cards and auto loan
Another DP for TransUnion
can you churn NFCU credit card SUBs?
I got NFCU’d. I signed up for the $300 offer, they gave me a $500 credit limit. I make enough money where that isn’t even worth my time to sign up. Wasted hard pull. Beyond frustrated.
Should still be able to get the $300 bonus by cycling through the line 2x a month.
Also happened to me. $500 CL.
I know wrong thread, but quick update on the $300 bonus.
1/1 approved for measly $500CL
1/11ish $300 bonus posted
Im not sure how they make profit, but not a bad booby prize for $500CL
I’m new to balance transfers. I’m curious though…If I were to spend money on my AMEX Hilton for a nice chunk of Hilton points, and then transfer the balance to this card would I still get all the Hilton points? Then I could have all of that spend at 0% APR for 12 months, and put the money into into index funds an average 7% or 8% return after tax?
Index Funds are kind of risky, if there’s a down year you’ll actually lose money. Better to put it into short term bonds or T-bills or an HYSA or something like that.
I just got this card several weeks ago at a better deal…. $200 SUP for 2k spend + $300 for joining and signing up for this CC within 14 days +100 referral + $98 Walmart plus credit!
DP’s at docs link below
I’d ask if they would honor this better deal. YMMV
