Our Verdict

Previously the highest bonus has been 50,000 points. This is 10,000 points less, but does come with the Amazon Prime membership. We haven’t seen the 50,000 bonus in some time. Points are worth 1¢ each.

Navy Federal is only available for military and veterans – full eligibility information can be found here (plus family members. Even if they are deceased). Keep in mind that joining NFCU is a hard pull, it’s possible you’ll land up with two hard pulls if you join and signup for the card, but hopefully those will be combined. Learn more about Navy Federal credit cards in the post Navy Federal Credit Union (NFCU) Credit Cards: List, Best Cards & Things You Must Know.

Post History:

  • Update 9/23/22: The public offer is now at 35,000 points after $4,000 spend; this time it comes with a free year of Amazon Prime as well ($139 value). There’s also a targeted version being sent out for 60k after $5k spend + free year of Amazon Prime; check your emails for Subject: You’re Preapproved—Earn 60K Bonus Points. (ht Sonja)
  • Update 11/8/21: Extended until Jan. 03, 2022. No prime this time. Hat tip to Roger Pavlik
  • Update 9/2/21: Extended until Nov 1, 2021.
  • Update 7/11/21: Make sure to change your default payment method to NFCU before ordering year of prime, because you’re not given the option to make the change before the purchase goes through.

Got the card back early January 2024. Used it to fund new checking account, but didn’t realize (until today) that transaction did NOT count toward minimum spend. Luckily noticed in time, and have other organic spend to meet spend requirement Whew!

I was turned down for this card. 800 + FICO score.
Reasons:
Balance status of NF accounts
Insufficient variety of secured loans
Length of NF membership
Direct deposit status with NF
Number of inquiries on credit bureau report (I’ve opened 1 other card in the last yr)
Waste of a hard pull. Beware!

I assume the Amazon Prime deal is just a matter of paying the Prime fee with this card (and you have until 1/1/2025 to do that, it looks like). Any issue with paying for Prime that is in the name of a spouse? I wouldn’t think so, but they may require name match so that you can’t sell this benefit to someone else.

Nope. Paid P2s Prime with my card, received statement credit a couple days later.

Anyone have any data points on repeat customers? I had this card in 2019 and again in 2022 (closed July 2022), both times taking the SUB and walking after a year.

I did yesterday get an email inviting me to apply for $350 SUB, but it was for the Cash Rewards card (which comes with Walmart+). Not interested in that one, although given its the same SUB and $49 cheaper to acquire maybe I should be.

Got targeted for the 60k offer last year so might be worth waiting for a higher SUB. Got the 50k offer about 6 yrs ago as well and was able to churn the offer last year. The first time I had the card, it was the first yr they had free Amazon Prime and I somehow was able to get it for free for the following 2 years when I renewed and kept my card. Kept the card because I felt it was worth the very low $49 fee for a flat 2% cb for all expenses and 3% cb for travel related expenses. Only canceled because I had a lot of other cards to put spend on at the time and wanted to know if I could churn this card. Not sure of the churn cycle but I waited about 2 yrs since closing and got the SUB again last yr.

Nothing related to this offer is “free”. What a joke.

Navy Federal also sent a targeted email yesterday asking me to refer friends to their credit cards.

Subj: Do You ❤️ Your Navy Federal Credit Card? Refer an Eligible Friend or Family Member!

Here is a link to the FAQ & PDF terms: https://nfcu.promo.eprize.com/referafriend23/faq.html

Unfortunately, this will not bypass the credit union eligibility requirements to become a member.
