[Expired] Navy Federal Flagship 50,000 Public Signup Bonus Offer ($500)

Deal has expired, view more NFCU deals by clicking here.

7/14/19: Offer has been extended until January 2020

3/1/19: Offer is back through September 3rd. Hat tip pandykolvas

The Offer

Direct Link to offer

  • Signup for the Navy Federal Flagship Rewards Visa Signature card and get 50,000 points after spending $4,000 within 90 days.

It comes as part of a (previously announced) revamp on the card, going into effect today, which adds a 3x category on travel, retains the 2x everywhere else, and now offers a set $.01 value on points when redeemed for cash.

Card Details

  • $49 annual fee, waived the first year
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • 3x on all travel purchases which includes many leisure/entertainment categories too (includes: airline and train tickets, hotel stays, car rentals, travel agencies, cruises, campgrounds, RV parks, timeshares, tourist attractions, boat rentals, airports, motor home rentals, ride-sharing services, bridges, tolls, ferries, parking, bus lines, limos, taxis commuter transport, public golf courses, aquariums, amusement parks)
  • 2x everywhere else, no maximum
  • Statement credit of $100 for Global Entry or $85 for TSA Precheck once every 4 years
  • Points are worth $.01 per point to redeem as cashback, all other redemptions have the same value as well
  • Standard Visa Signature benefits and other benefits

Our Verdict

Nice signup offer here, and a pretty good overall card too. Points are now worth 1 cent each making this bonus valued at $500. Previously, there have been targeted 40k signup offers on this card and public 30k offers, I believe.

Navy Federal is only available for military and veterans – full eligibility information can be found here (plus family members. Even if they are deceased). Keep in mind that joining NFCU is a hard pull, it’s possible you’ll land up with two hard pulls if you join and signup for the card, but hopefully those will be combined. Learn more about Navy Federal credit cards in the post Navy Federal Credit Union (NFCU) Credit Cards: List, Best Cards & Things You Must Know.

Note: Plastiq does not earn rewards with NFCU cards and won’t trigger the spend requirement.

Is there any chance that they will issue this as a Mastercard instead of Visa Signature?

MickeyMouse

What’s the difference if it’s an MC vs Visa Sig?

FlyingNinja
FlyingNinja

MC has better cell phone insurance coverage for Navy Federal

Loreta

What are you talking about? This card has cell phone protection already many months ago

Loreta

This credit card has cell phone protection already…

FlyingNinja
FlyingNinja

If they allow this card with MC, then the cell phone protection is up to $600. The visa version is only up to $250. Hope that makes sense. https://www.doctorofcredit.com/credit-card-cell-phone-insurance-compared-get-600-coverage-free/

Aloha808

This card is only offered as a Visa. Got that straight from a Navy Fed CSR.

V

All Wells Fargo (at least the Propel cards) cards provide up to $600 per incident, and two incidents per year. The first 4 phones listed on your family plan qualify. Only $25 deductible. Is the MC coverage better?

Is this serious, or just trolling? I would say 0 chance. You don’t get to pick and choose that at any bank I know of. The banks negotiate that a much higher level. And, banks can and do switch carriers without your permission, and you can either take it or leave it.

And, sounds like you know you are going to have a cell phone claim soon. But, if you really want the better insurance, apply for this card and the Go Rewards Mastercard and probably only get one hard pull.

FlyingNinja
FlyingNinja

It is not trolling, I really don’t know if any bank will allow it hence the question. I currently carried a Go Rewards Visa Card so as you can see there are two versions of the Go Rewards card. I don’t have to file a cell phone claim soon, it just that I want maximum protection.

Then I would call Navy Federal and see if you can get your current card converted to MC (hopefully without incurring a HP). Or, ask them your original question about Flagship.

Lrdx
Lrdx

You can at Bank of America.

Gadget

Great. Every card has a 1-800 number on the back, and so does the application page. These are very account or promotion specific questions, and probably requires someone to pull up the account or terms. One account might be grandfathered, where someone else might not be who signed up under a promo. Maybe the option would be longevity based, or you might be able to convert one way but not the other.

I just know I have never ran across a button that said do you want to Visa or the MC on an application. You get what they give.

Lrdx

My wife applied in branch, and she was asked if she wanted an MC or Visa.

Nfcu or BofA?

Jen

With the platinum card at nfcu the application asks if u want visa or mastercard so its not that absurd of a question.

Gadget

Ok. Hence why I said call the credit union. But even CSR’s don’t know every product or option.

momosan

No, but the NFCU Cash Rewards card comes in a World Mastercard and is offering $250 on $2500 spend. Oddly enough it also comes as a Visa Signature (which is what I have) and I honestly do not know how you manage to get the MasterCard version rather than Visa. The World Mastercard in this instance DOES have better benefits than Visa – price protection being the one that comes to mind. No annual fee, 1.5% back on everything, the occasional special offering (for a while it was a bonus back for warehouse stores.

I’m theorizing that having a deceased grandfather that wasn’t a member isn’t going to work?

guy bucktastik
guy bucktastik

I have two deceased grandfathers that weren’t members of NFCU and I am a member of NFCU. Neither my grandfathers being deceased nor their status as non-members qualified me for membership.

Is this a riddle or something? How did you qualify?

William Charles

Probably not, did they serve?

Kevin

There’s a targeted offer for 60kpoints w/ 4K msr for this card.

Emporio
Emporio

It’s not necessary for your deceased grandfather to have had a Navy Fed account. As long as he served in any branch of the military then you qualify for what Navy Federal calls a “leap frog” membership where his eligibility skips a generation and is conferred onto you. You just need to apply with a rep over the phone and provide your grandfather’s name and what branch he served under.

FlyingBoat

My daughter was in reserves through basic training a few years ago. I was accepted when I applied last year. They never even asked about my daughter’s detailed information or contact info. I understand it is an audit type of thing, where they may check. I seriously doubt they would be able to check into anything regarding your deceased grandfather.

On an interesting note, my grandfather was born in 1858. Nearly 100 years before me. Maybe they could see if he was a water boy in the civil war, lol. His grandfather was born in 1788.

Gene
Gene

Thats prettt wild. Some late fatherhood in your family. Especially back in those days. Very cool to know that about your own genealogy though!

Jennifer Batten
Jennifer Batten

Hi Dave, what you have not mentioned about your deceased grandfather is whether or not he was in the military. If he was in the military, you could probably qualify. I became a member using my mothers honorable discharge from army status, she is not a member of NFCU.

dave
dave

Thanks Jennifer. Yes, I was not implying having a deceased relative alone could possibly be enough to get me entry! They didn’t even ask his name and I was accepted.

Alex

Navy Federal has definitely made improvements to the card. However, getting the Fidelity Rewards Visa or the Citi Double Cash card and combining that with the new Wells Fargo Propel achieves basically the same points earning without an annual fee.

Charlie

Also, NFCU requires high minimum redemptions on Flagship, Go Rewards, and More Rewards.

I called NFCU about membership.
I have never been in the military. But I have a deceased grandfather who served in the military, and was not a NFCU member.
NFCU told me that this makes me eligible for membership.
But, those circumstances would not qualify me for USAA.

Snorlax
Snorlax

Yeah, Navy Federal is very lenient with your association with the armed forces, with Navy Federal you can even be just roommates with a servicember to be eligible for membership or even just a civilian employee.

USAA has different membership requirements. With USAA you basically either have to have served in the military or be a child or spouse of someone who both served and is also a USAA member.

yep roomates was added early on, actually very progressive of them. its a great fin institution.

the highest offer for this card was a targeted offer of 60K about 5 years ago, that was never repeated. this is the highest offer since.

Bleh, thanks, I’ll still give it a shot tomorrow anyway. My card is still on the way.

Gadget

One DP to not matching isn’t a set rule. I would try, but my opening was in March, and my spend wasn’t organic (couple bank account openings) and thought I wasn’t going to get my bonus in the 1st place. So, I won’t be calling. Good luck if you try!

Matt P
Matt P

Called and rep said I could apply for a new card and they would pull my credit all over again and I’d then have 2 accounts cause apparently there’s nothing preventing that. I asked several times to make sure I understood correctly. I said I’d think about it. Not sure I can hit $7k spend in the next 3 months.

Did you eventually receive the bonus from your non-organic spend?

So if I got the bonus on the old version of this card several years ago do I qualify again for bonus currently?

Gadget

Terms: “Offer valid for cardholders issued new Visa Signature® Flagship Rewards Credit Card accounts”

So, if you have a current card that says Flagship Rewards on it, no. Assuming you closed it years ago, there is nothing I see that says lifetime, so I would say your good to go. You can always call and ask, but could open a can of worms, and CSR’s are usually clueless on the hard questions.

I would risk it if it was me. No DP’s means your on your own. https://www.doctorofcredit.com/navy-federal-credit-union-nfcu-credit-cards-list-best-cards-things-must-know/

I opened this card for the 40K points in March, and cashed out today for 1 cent a point. Probably close it soon! For me, I wouldn’t try again this year, but maybe next.

Matt P
Matt P

I take that to mean not an existing card so you can keep the old one and try to get a new one especially considering the call I just had. The worst that happens is they deny you because you have one, so you then close it and call recon.

Gadget, did your bank account funding with the NFCU Flagship Rewards card end up counting toward the minimum spending requirement? How long after meeting the minimum spending requirement did your bonus post to your account?

I funded a BBVA checking account with the card, and the transaction posted as a purchase (after first appearing to be a cash advance), but I have not received any rewards points, so I am questioning whether it will count toward MSR. I had planned to do bank account funding for another $500 at BBVA and $2k at PNC, but if these aren’t going to count toward MSR, there’s not much point in doing that.

Thank you for your help!

I got approved for a $20,500 credit limit. Having said that I’m only 11/24 and I also have a pretty long history with NFCU. It’s interesting to note though that I’ve been declined twice (2 seperate cards) by Wells Fargo and once from Bank of America within the last three months because of too many closures (7 in the past year). But i’ve also been approve for the NFCU more rewards card a few months ago in between the three cancellations. So Navy Federal seems to be a lot more lenient then many of the main cc distribuitors.

millionairenextdoor
millionairenextdoor

Was approved for $25,000 instantly. I have one other card with NFCU that has an identical limit. My personal report shows 4/24 and 3/6. If you’re applying as a new member, be prepared for double HPs; 1 on EQ for the membership application and 1 on TU for the credit card. Oddly, I was just denied for PenFed’s very similar Pathfinder Rewards card because they thought I was overextended at 4% utilization.

Chuck,

Please add to the eligibility criteria for Navy FCU that you can be the child of a former (even deceased) member of the military who was never themselves a Navy FCU member, such as my father who served in the Army Air Forces, as they called it in World War II and makes me eligible.

Cecil

How does that work on the application if my grandfather is deceased?
