Negative Changes To The Marriott Rewards Plus Points Program

Back in May, Marriott launched their plus points program which allows people to earn up to 2,000 points per month by performing actions on social networking sites. It was an easy (and free) way of racking up some miles in a short space of time. On the 15th of July, they made some massive changes to the program which we’ve outlined below:

  • Twitter follows now worth 25 points each (down from 250 points)
  • Facebook likes now do not earn points
  • Maximum of four actions per day (100 points)
  • No points earned for using hashtags on facebook
  • No points earned for checking in with foursquare

You also need to use the #MRPoints when doing hastags. We’ve put the old and new earning tables together below so you can see the differences:

They’ve also added a bunch of new properties that you can earn points for following. Here is a list of the new properties added and their twitter handles.

If there is sufficient interest we will also make a list of all the instagram accounts for these properties, let us know on twitter or in the comments section. A full updated list will be kept at the original post found here.

Our Verdict

Obviously this is a terrible change, I always thought 250 points per follow/like was incredibly generous but to slash it to only 25 points is laughable. To make matters worse you cannot follow 80 properties in one hit, instead you have to follow 4 per day.

Hopefully Marriott realizes they’ve gone to far in the other direction and change the promotion again. I’m certainly not going to be bothering with this promotion under the new change and I have gone ahead and unfollowed all of Marriott’s properties as my form of protest. I’d recommend you do the same and hopefully Marriott will up the number of points per follow.

Is there any way without staying at a Marriott or buying or transferring points or redeeming points, to keep points active now? Waht is the minimu redemption option ?
