New American Express Gold Benefits Showing For Existing Customers (2x On Gas To Be Kept Until 10/04/2019)

Small update: Existing cardholders (those who were cardholders before October 4th, 2018) will keep the 2x earning rate on gas stations until October 4th, 2019. American Express provided the following statement to Frequent Miler:

Additionally, with these changes, the current 2X Membership Rewards points on spend at U.S. Gas Stations earn will be no longer be offered on the Gold Card. Current Premier Rewards Gold Card Members will continue to receive this benefit until October 4, 2019, when this benefit will be discontinued.

Keep in mind other cards earn at a much higher rate on gas stations.

In case you didn’t know, a number of new benefits are coming to the Premier Rewards Gold card today (including a name change to simply ‘American Express Gold’ Update: Card is now live). These benefits are now showing up for existing users:

  • Card will earn at the following rates:
    • 4x points at U.S. Restaurants
    • 4x points at U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 in spend per calendar year)
    • 3x points for flights booked directly with airlines
    • 1x points on all other purchases
  • $120 dining credit. This is a $10 monthly credit that can be used at Grubhub, Seamless, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Shake  Shack. Link to sign up
  • $100 airline fee credit
  • Metal card design in gold, or limited edition rose gold until 1/9/2019
  • Annual fee has been increased to $250

Requesting New Card

You can request a new metal gold card online by following the prompts (Account Services > Order a Replacement Card > Metal Card). If you want the limited edition rose gold card then you need to start a chat request. The only problem with that is the chat agents obviously haven’t been properly trained as they have no idea what you’re talking about. I imagine this will be fixed shortly. In my opinion American Express will almost certainly run out of card stock for this rose gold version, I think it will be a lot more popular than they are expecting so I’d request one sooner rather than later if you’re interested. These requests are now working.Your existing card will continue to work until the new card arrives and is activated. Whatever color the primary cardholder chooses, the authorized users will receive the same color (and no possibility of mixing and matching).

Reps are now starting that you won’t be able to request the new Rose card until tomorrow.

Sure enough, I JUST asked a chat rep around midnight (start of Oct 4) if they knew anything. All I got was that some members got an early look at “tests” and they have no plans for any revamped cards at this time.

Once I see the changes in my account, I’ll definitely be one making a request for Rose Gold!

New benefits are up. Just spoke with chat rep, he told me to check back in 24 hours if I want to have the rose gold metal card version

Got the same response through online chat. The agent told me we should be able to request for the rose gold version online 24 hrs later.

Kinda funny how people think it’s 12AM everywhere if it’s 12AM on the east coast. I always assume companies mean 12AM Pacific time when they announce “midnight” for anything so that way people on the east coast don’t get early access and people on the west coast have to wait an additional 3 hours.

East coast is what’s important /s /kinda true

any huge business relies in EST. not sure how u think PST is the standard. west coast time is rarely used on US domestic servers when ur talking about consistent continuity. hawaii always gets screwed. on rare occasions like promos and etc, CST or MST or even PST are used.

Is there any idea if the airline credit can be used for gift cards?

Abey

Delta 2x $50 always worked for me

Someone please explain how to use the airline credit for gift cards. Might sound like a dumb question but I don’t want to mess it up.

Patrick
Patrick

You can buy Delta Gift cards in 50$ denominations and Amex codes it as airline credit.

I bought a 100$ AA gift card and it coded as airline credit for me. Others have used Southwest.

Just google for what codes as airline credit on Amex and you should get a bunch of articles

One more noob question. If I add multiple authorized users, can they also use this $100 airline credit as well?

IIRC only card that AU’s also get a Credit ($250 each) is the City National Bank Crystal Visa Infinite.

But unless something changes you should be able to get $100 in 2018 and $100 in 2019 – if you time the application right you can triple dip Dec 2018, Dec 2019 and Jan 2020 before paying the AF.

Abey

First pick an airline you would like to get reimbursed. (Not sure if you could do it online. I called up).
Then go on Delta’s website (thats what i do) and buy with your PRG card two separate $50 digital gift cards and email them to yourself as a gift. You should receive a credit just like an Amex offer.

Thanks William Charles I found some online I bought a $100 southwest e gift card. I only fly southwest when I can help it.

Always check Flyertalk for recent reports. The AMEX forum has dedicated threads for each airline to report reimbursement success/failure and the requirements to trigger it.

Does anybody know if the gold card that authorized users for holders of AMEX Platinum can get, that same as this card?

Bo knows

does the grocery cap of 25k apply to all existing gold cards effective 10/04 or the cap will only apply once the existing gold cards reach next anniversary?
assuming the terms and conditions still hold until the existing cards hit next anniversary. so still 2x on grocery/gas uncapped.

Interestingly, the t&c for the updated benefits still mention the gas station bonus:

You will earn: 2 additional points (for a total of 3 points) for airfare on a scheduled flight charged directly with passenger airlines (charter flights and private jet flights are excluded); 1 additional point (for a total of 2 points) for each dollar charged at restaurants located in the US; 1 additional point (for a total of 2 points) for gasoline at gas stations located in the U.S. (superstores, supermarkets and warehouse clubs that sell gasoline are not considered gas stations); and 1 additional point (for a total of 2 points) for purchases at supermarkets located in the U.S. (superstores and warehouse clubs are not considered supermarkets

looks like the 2x gas station perk is staying according to a comment up above.

Could’nt get the 100k/$5K Plat or 50k/$1K to pop did pull the trigger on 50K/$2k – gambled on the $120 Dinning credit Applying 10/2 – we can make use of Dining credit on all but Shake Shack here in Portland.

So $320 and no AF and plus an easy 50K MR –

You can drive up to Seattle for Shake Shack.

Why make the rose gold a limited edition if it’s going to be popular? Opportunity cost for me is a United signup bonus and/or a chase ink bonus…
